To expect to have a hair do 'to go out with'

Handbaghag · 30/08/2020 17:33

Is it just me or am I being unreasonable to expect that when I pay for a cut and blow that my hair should look ready to go on a night out. I have a stacked bob that I can blow dry to be big in height/volume and look ready to go out. Yesterday I paid my money for a cut and blow and the hairdresser used a small barrel brush and I left with fairly flat looking hair, even after I'd said I wanted it to look top heavy/volume etc. Am I just old fashioned (at 48) to expect to look like I've 'just come out of the hairdresser's' and feel my hair looks good or is a cut and blow nowadays basically someone just drying your hair after cutting it.

When you cut hair wet then you dry it fairly flat and straight to check that it is even. Sometimes you'll notice a hairdresser go back over and double check something technical like a bob to check that it is even, as well as going over the front of the hair/ fringe to check it sits nicely. That's what you are paying for, not to look like a queen for the evening and like shit for the next 4-8 weeks

JadesRollerDisco · 30/08/2020 19:27

That said, they should absolutely give you some more volume at the point if that's what you want. But probably wouldn't bother unless you have specifically stated you want it that way or have said you are going out afterwards.

QueenPaws · 30/08/2020 19:29

Mine looks shocking when I leave as I leave with it wet! Takes a good few washes before it looks decent. Curly hair issues...

VivaMiltonKeynes · 30/08/2020 19:30

I have on a couple of occasions not had the look that I want and they have happily either straightened more or whatever .

OhTheRoses · 30/08/2020 19:38

My hairdresser blow dries mine perfectly. Occasionally if we are going out to something special I have an appointment just for a blow dry at 6/6.30 and go straight on. Just a wash and blow dry is £50 though.

GreyHare · 30/08/2020 19:39

I always get a dry cut as no hairdresser has ever dried my hair satisfactorily, but my current hairdresser does the best cut and charges me £13 and I'm in and out in 15 minutes, perfection as far as I concerned.

UnderCaffeinated · 30/08/2020 19:41

My hairdresser does a fantastic job, I'm always happy with how she's dried it and she does ask me each time how I want it. She gets my hair much shinier and bouncier than I can.

Bluntness100 · 30/08/2020 19:44

Sneery and snide isn't a good look, dear. It isnt even "retro"

A stacked Bob is a dated style now and doing it big is retro. It’s not sneery or snide for the poster to say it. Doesn’t mean the op doesn’t suit it, but there is no point pretending it’s current.

As said this is likely about communication. What the op sees as “fairly flat” the hairdresser, and likely many others, would possibly see as a lot of volume. So taking a pic of herself with it the way she wants will help the hair dresser understand.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 30/08/2020 19:46

You are definitely not being unreasonable. Ive said the exact same thing to stylists before and they say yes, but then rough blow dry, make zero effort and it falls flat. The entire point of paying for a bouncy blowout is so that you dont have to do it and its easier when someone else does it. Definitely be more assertive next time- I'm going to aswell and if they dont do it I will say something mid way through. I pay a lot for a cut and blow dry and if they are going to just ignore my polite requests then they deserve negative comments.

Who cares if its "dated"? we dont all want to look like clones of each other wearing the exact same haircut that happens to be "in" at the time lol. Not to mention, it might not be suitable for the OP's hair type or face shape, for goodness sake. Eg. if you have fine hair, it looks better blunt cut and shorter as the ends tend to get ratty- there would be little use in trying to make very fine delicate hair look long and waved if it looks thin. Equally, there would be little point in trying to force curly hair into a fringe because it wont lie flat. Same with clothes-just because something is "in" does NOT mean everyone should wear it, regardless of how unflattering or stupid it looks.

I’m amazed by these comments. The hairdressers round here are brilliant blowdriers, I can tell within 2 seconds of a blow dry is any good, they need to pulling your hair hard from the roots. If they are all careful and gentle it’s going to be a poor blowdry.

I go for a blowdry quite often to cheer myself up as I always look a better version of myself. I have either poker straight, it needs to be done with a brush not strighteners until the end, straight she bouncy which is my main one, curly blowdry - bit WAGGY but can have it’s moments or beach waves which is when they curl your hair using tongs or straighteners leaving the ends straight. A good blowdry should look good for at least 3-4 days. Clearly a lot of you have hairdressers who haven’t a clue. Personally I would look for a salon which does a lot of Mediterranean, Jewish Indian hair, eg thick and wavy hair as they tend to be the ones who know how to tame our crazy locks

Did you actually read my post? I was clearly responding to the comment I quoted in the post for good ness sake.

cravingthelook · 30/08/2020 19:58

My stylist always makes my hair glam... but he does cost a small fortune 😂

Lockheart · 30/08/2020 19:58

@hastingsmua1

"That's misogynistic"

"You're haggard and unattractive and jealous"

That's one hell of a split personality you have going on there.

HermioneWeasley · 30/08/2020 20:21

YANBU, my 20 something hairdresser insists on doing mine even when I tell him I’m just going home and having a take away!

SerenDippitty · 30/08/2020 20:29

@Janaih

Dismayed by the comments shaming OPs choice of haircut and referencing that meme. Shame indeed.
This.

My hairdresser knows I hate my hair looking really like I've just stepped out of a hairdressers (it just makes me feel really self conscious) and asks how floofy I want it doing that day. If I was going out and wanted it really big she'd do it that way.

I still always get spotted that I've just been to the hairdressers and it's not as if I'm not regular - I go every month on the dot to get my roots done as I've got a really high maintenance colour - but I get noticed as her cuts are that bloody good. She's fucking amazing (and not expensive at all really).

I bloody love my hairdresser - she's an angel with scissors - for the first time in my 40+ life I have hair that I actually bloody love - she's never allowed to retire or move on.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/08/2020 20:45

Agree that it's all the European hairdressers that do a PROPER blow dry

I was in a salon the other day getting my nails done and the hairdressers are all Greek/Polish/Latvian - gorgeous big bouncy curls on everyone leaving

DeRigueurMortis · 30/08/2020 21:21

I get what you mean OP.

I've got long wavy hair and can do an ok job of blow drying it (especially if I use by babyliss brush) but I can never do it quite as well as a professional.

They manage to give it loads of extra body and "swish" with lovely natural curls at the ends.

One time I went and a new hairdresser did a rough blow dry and the used straighteners on it.

It was a good cut but I was somewhat disappointed as it was just flat and ordinary looking and something I felt (if I owned straighteners) I could have done myself.

I've since learned to be very specific about what I wanted and took a picture of my hair after my usual hairdresser had done it how I liked to show in the event I got a different hairdresser again.

Everysinglebloodytime · 30/08/2020 22:21

Christ, this must be why I feel like a complete knob if I get my hair blow dried at a hairdressers. I didn't realise they were aiming for 'night out' type style.

I've only just been brave enough to ask them to leave it or blast it dry.

MsEllany · 30/08/2020 22:48

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a hairdresser and they’ve not styled it for me Confused sure if you leave with wet hair then naturally that doesn’t happen, but if it is dried then it is ‘done’?

There’s some sort of weird competitive hair-do-shitness going on here. I’ve never had a conversation about going to a hairdresser without having a variation ‘it always feels so nice when they do it’ ending.

I have curly hair, I always have a curly blow dry (rather than drying my natural curls if that makes sense!) because hairdressers are uniformly shit at drying my hair the way I like it. I haven’t had anyone insist on doing it straight or using straighteners since maybe 2000!

MsEllany · 30/08/2020 22:56

Now I’ve just read some more comments - we’re seriously saying that maybe the hairdresser doesn’t know how to do a ‘retro blow dry’. Retro. As in - blow dry the roots over the top of a brush instead of under?

Seriously how stupid do you think hairdressers are? This thread is fucking rude. Hairdressers learn how to blow dry hair before they learn how to cut it, this one didn’t do what OP wanted and it’s not because the style was retro and outdated Hmm. Christ alive. She didn’t ask for a blue rinse and a perm.

Tillygetsit · 30/08/2020 23:46

Ive just found an amazing hairdresser. She's the first to actually listen to me and do my hair so I don't feel daft leaving the salon but do feel I look fab. The only downside is that she's a perfectionist and it takes bloody ages.

Didkdt · 31/08/2020 00:28

Erm just yo throw in a different perspective my hairdresser explained blow drying at the moment is 10 minutes maximum there's only so much they can do in that time and my experience is they're doing their best
