Seriously stuck in a food rut at the moment and I’m so uninspired I’m rarely cooking a proper meal.

What’s on the menu in your home tonight?

Venison lasagne and salad. Leftover from sunday evening.

AdoraBell · 01/09/2020 12:43

Halloumifries did you make the venison lasagne or buy it? If you made it from scratch would you mind telling me how please? I’ve never cooked with venison but would like to try.

Tonight I’m doing pasta with purple sprouting broccoli, green beans on possibly some peas.

mbosnz · 01/09/2020 13:45

Tonight it's fish pie. Good old fashioned, bog standard, Mum's fish pie.

HalloumiFries · 01/09/2020 13:45

@AdoraBell , I made it myself but have probably made it sound much more grand than it actually is. It's my usual basic bolognese recipe but with venison mince instead of beef. We live close to a game dealer so tend to buy quite a lot of their products and more often than not, substitute venison mince in ragu and chilli. I find it can dry out so doesn't need quite as much cooking as beef or lamb but otherwise the principles are the same. I also buy a lot of diced venison in the summer and do kebabs on the bbq, marinated in yoghurt and/or harissa.

Homemade pizza
🍕

We went to Pizza Hut yesterday but there was an hours wait for a table so we. went home. Today we are making our own pizza & salad bar complete with breadsticks, bacon bits and croutons etc

AdoraBell · 01/09/2020 14:28

Thank you Halloumifries, that’s really helpful 👍

MotherofPearl · 01/09/2020 15:23

Tonight I'm being adventurous and making Ottolenghi's filo cauliflower pie. Recipe was in the Guardian a few weeks back and looked tempting. Will serve it with steamed runner beans. Leftover lemon drizzle cake from DP's birthday yesterday for pudding.

TheSweetestHalleluja · 01/09/2020 15:34

Vegetable soup with home made bread (well, in a bread maker - much easier!)

BigBlondeBimbo · 01/09/2020 18:21

Quorn burger, chips and salad for me! Kids and DH had spaghetti and meatballs.

Manolin · 01/09/2020 20:00

A long slice of cooked ham, on spelt toast with some hard English cheese, very dry now after leaving out to air, but the taste is earthy and chestnut-rich, maybe a little cloy, but it works, shaved to let some more space in - to allow the juices and liquid to flow and mess-up within it - over some thinly sliced tomatoes from outside. Mushrooms and garlic, warmed together, in some butter, on top. Coriander and a side salad of leaves. A cracked runny egg on top. Thank you hens, as always. The raft of that jug of red wine from yesterday, after the fly that got into it has been hooked out. No swipe, all I ever do is slowly dip my finger down onto the surface, like a helicopter hovering to pick up a stranded sailor, and I am up and out. Not sure about the fly but the wine is saved. Shame the clouds have drawn in from the north. Forty minutes ago, the table outside was bathed in gold. Not so now, so we will eat inside around the kitchen table. I do not like that segregation from outside. I feel like a robber. I need to put back more tomorrow.

Veggie gluten free lasagna

mbosnz · 02/09/2020 17:27

I'm ready for the cooler weather, I'm way more comfortable with 'cooler months comfort food'!

So, tonight is devilled sausages, with creamy garlic mash, broccoli, leeks, baby carrots, beans, and asparagus. And possibly some roasted parsnip, pumpkin and kumara. If I can be arsed.

(Oh, and feedback on the Hairy Biker's Chicken Markhani, and butter chicken - absolutely gorgeous, and not at all fiddly to make!)

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/09/2020 17:29

Salmon and pea risotto for me, sausages and veg for DS.

MotherofPearl · 02/09/2020 17:42

A marrow stuffed with puy lentils, herbs, feta cheese and sundried tomatoes, served with runner beans and a spicy homemade tomato sauce.

DeeDimer · 02/09/2020 17:49

Smug in my caravan today...slow cooked welsh lamb shanks in red wine gravy with Welsh new potatoes and broccoli. Yum :)

mbosnz · 02/09/2020 17:51

That sounds gorgeous DeeDimer!

DeeDimer · 02/09/2020 18:42

@mbosnz

That sounds gorgeous DeeDimer!
Though I say it myself...it was stunning!
mbosnz · 02/09/2020 18:49

Ours has been downgraded - DH and I looked at each other, and clearly neither of us were feeling the vibe. . . reckon it's going to be a Maccas/KFC combo-night. . .

BigBlondeBimbo · 02/09/2020 18:53

I made wheaten bread (aka soda bread) this evening and just ate a huge chunk of it with butter. We are calling that dinner! Dc1 out on a big day out with DH, so they'll have a pizza out of the freezer when they come in. Dc2 had a ham sandwich and might have a bit of pizza too.

We are all over the place today! Think takeaway may have made more sense, but there you are.

MeganChips · 02/09/2020 19:42

Keema cottage pie with green beans. Comfort food!

AdoraBell · 02/09/2020 20:50

Chicken breast, potatoes roasted and salad.

Alfiemoon1 · 02/09/2020 21:00

Gammon with pineapple salsa new potatoes and green beans

Tinuviel · 02/09/2020 21:03

Smoked Haddock Risotto! Delish! (Actually they are Basa fillets but still really tasty!)

cricketmum84 · 03/09/2020 06:42

I agree @mbosnz I absolutely love the food this time of year. Warming soups and stews with mashed potato and seasonal veg. Mmmm much nicer than a salad!

Yesterdays menu was homemade leek and potato soup topped with grated cheese and crispy onions. Then smoked basa fillets (snap @Tinuviel) with steamed new potatoes, Savoy cabbage and green beans although I'm veggie so just had the potatoes and veg.

AdoraBell · 03/09/2020 20:14

Spaghetti with bacon and tomato sauce.
