Jo Malone - to complain re candle damage

Brownthomas13 · 20/08/2020 18:06

I just opened a new candle and the matches that came with it are faulty. The top came off of the match and split into 3 pieces, 2 onto the carpet and 1 onto a dresser. I was dealing with the carpet first and in the meantime the top of the dresser has little burn marks from the match.
It’s antique and not in perfect condition but the burn mark is obvious and I’m pissed.

Can I complain about this? The candle was 64 quid so I’d expect the matches to not burn my furniture.

You just did, here.

The question is, will you complain on a forum or medium where Jo Malone (the company, not the individual, who regrettably isn't part of her eponymous venture anymore) might actually hear you.

SteveArnottsbeadyeyes · 20/08/2020 18:16

Well you sort of might expect a match to burn furniture Hmm

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 20/08/2020 18:19

So effectively you struck a match a bit hard and it broke?
Yeah, fill your boots. They'll be nice I expect and send you a new candle or a voucher.
But you're a CF tbh.

jeremypaxo · 20/08/2020 18:20

I'd probably complain as it's a safety thing, but I'd also just chalk it up as one of those things. It could have happened with any match really.

They will probably have some small print somewhere saying that matches should only be struck above a non-flammable surface or something.

Darkestseasonofall · 20/08/2020 18:21

I think it's a bit of an unreasonable complaint tbh.

HeddaGarbled · 20/08/2020 18:24

Blimey, do you get special matches with Jo Malone candles?

Covidiot · 20/08/2020 18:31

In 2017 Jo Malone recalled many matches as they broke when they were struck. Perhaps you got an old pack? I’d complain.

LockdownLump · 20/08/2020 18:41

When one's Jo Malone match, scorches one's antique dresser, then yah. One should ruddy bloody complain!!

Thisismytimetoshine · 20/08/2020 18:42

Do they actually supply their own matches?!

MrsSpookyM · 20/08/2020 18:44

Has Crumbs done another name change?

speakout · 20/08/2020 18:45

Striking any match comes with a risk, no matter how posh the match.
That's why striking matches over expensive furniture or carpets is never to be advised.
You may get a free candle or voucher if you complain, but they won't accept liability.

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 20/08/2020 18:45
Grin She wouldn't do anything so infra dig as complain. Or, tbh, waste her money on JM. She'd go straight for a Cire Trudon.
dwiz8 · 20/08/2020 18:46

The candle wasn't damaged

You were too rough with a match

Goodness me this is laughable

combatbarbie · 20/08/2020 18:49

There were dodgy batches, my DH used to work for Estee Lauder when they were recalled. I would complain.... I liked their matches though, very elegant for when lighting the dining table candles at Christmas.

FuckwitMcGee · 20/08/2020 18:49

£64 for a bloody candle?! Confused

ekidmxcl · 20/08/2020 18:50

I think you could point out via email that the matches are shit quality and broke causing damage.

Or do they take online reviews? You could write it in there.

However, the way to address the damage is home insurance.

Probably they’ll send an apology and do nothing for you so I’d not bother. Everywhere is shit these days. Cutting costs affects quality but nobody cares about anything anymore. People do the bare minimum and everything is as cheap as possible.

LST · 20/08/2020 18:50

You paid 64 quid for a candle 😳 I'd expect it to light itself!

Ooooosh · 20/08/2020 18:50

Surely it’s your fault the match snapped?

ekidmxcl · 20/08/2020 18:51

Who cares if OP paid £64 or £500 for a fucking candle. The company shouldn’t send hazardous matches out anyway.

cantstopsinginglittlebabybum · 20/08/2020 18:51

@Thisismytimetoshine yes they give you a box of matches with the candle

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/08/2020 18:51

😂 same here
RyanBergarasTeeth · 20/08/2020 18:56

Yes i would complain it could be a faulty match. Ive struck many matches and have never experienced one to break into 3 pieces and ive used some shocking quality matches. Whats the worst that can happen? A refund or a new box of matches or a voucher maybe.

combatbarbie · 20/08/2020 18:57

Not sure why people are scoffing at the price... If you can afford it why not?

romeolovedjulliet · 20/08/2020 18:59

another slow day in the 1st world of problems.

LST · 20/08/2020 18:59

@combatbarbie people can scoff at what they like. 64 quid on a candle is pretty bloody steep. I'm just aghast people spend that much. Its literally burning money!
