Jo Malone - to complain re candle damage

Brownthomas13 · 20/08/2020 18:06

I just opened a new candle and the matches that came with it are faulty. The top came off of the match and split into 3 pieces, 2 onto the carpet and 1 onto a dresser. I was dealing with the carpet first and in the meantime the top of the dresser has little burn marks from the match.
It’s antique and not in perfect condition but the burn mark is obvious and I’m pissed.

Can I complain about this? The candle was 64 quid so I’d expect the matches to not burn my furniture.

The company shouldn’t send hazardous matches out anyway

I've never struck a match that wasn't hazardous tbh

jeremypaxo · 20/08/2020 19:09

I've got no time for reverse candle snobbery Grin

A luxury scented candle arguably gives many more hours of enjoyment than, say, a massage. If you'd spend £64 on that, or a haircut, or a spa day, or a meal out, or a handbag, you're entitled to spend it on a candle. There's no rules about how to treat yourself.

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 20/08/2020 19:10

Yeah, hazard potential kind of goes with the territory for a match surely? Grin

Chloemol · 20/08/2020 19:10

It’s a match of course it will burn. However are you sure you didn’t strike too hard?

I wouldn’t complain, but then I wouldn’t spend £64 on a candle either!

Alwaysoutofreach · 20/08/2020 19:13

I would complain, it 'could' be a faulty batch of matches that could cause a serious fire.

Brownthomas13 · 20/08/2020 19:13

Sorry should have said I lit another 3 matches outside and they all were faulty. The head lit but fell off in one piece or split and the lit pieces fell off. It looks like a faulty box of matches.
They are larger than normal matches so it left a noticeable burn mark on the dresser.

BlueJava · 20/08/2020 19:14

Yes, I'd contact Jo Malones and explain what happened and see what they say.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 20/08/2020 19:14

If the match split into 3, surely only one bit was actually alight? unless you meant lengthways, which would be weird I’d probably have gone for the burning bit first...

VinylDetective · 20/08/2020 19:15

Matches? How common, surely one has a silver candle lighter?

katy1213 · 20/08/2020 19:16

What's wrong with Bryant&May? Or is that just for Yankee Candles?

vanillandhoney · 20/08/2020 19:19

@ekidmxcl

Who cares if OP paid £64 or £500 for a fucking candle. The company shouldn’t send hazardous matches out anyway.
Aren't all matches hazardous?
WhoEatsPopTarts · 20/08/2020 19:19

You were pissed? Perhaps that’s why you had a problem.

MoggyP · 20/08/2020 19:21

But that's what matches are meant to do - faulty or not. Their whole reason to exist

Brownthomas13 · 20/08/2020 19:22

@OnceUponAMidnightBeery the head of the match split into 3 burning pieces. The wooden bit (not sure of the name!) stayed in my hand - unlit.
These matches are slightly larger than normal ones. I’ll try to attach a pic

fairydustandpixies · 20/08/2020 19:25

Jeez, people are harsh here! OP, no way could I afford £64 for a candle nor do I have an antique dresser but if I could and had, I would complain if the matches are faulty. Actually, I'd complain if I had a £4 Aldi knock off and rubbish matches which caused damage.

Take photos, contact their customer services by email with the photos, be factual not emotional and tell them how you want them to rectify the damage.

Viviennemary · 20/08/2020 19:26

The matches sound like a health and safety risk. Complain.

Lougle · 20/08/2020 19:26

@LST

You paid 64 quid for a candle 😳 I'd expect it to light itself!
I bought a Yankee Candle from a supermarket. It had a funny yellow gadget in the top of it and I was musing about it being a candle lighter, but couldn't see how it could possibly work. Turned out it was a security device that had to be removed prior to sale! Grin
1Morewineplease · 20/08/2020 19:29

Yep.. another one who thinks it’s madness to spend £64 on an effing candle.

runningonemptyfulloflove · 20/08/2020 19:29

The most middle class post 😂

CarolVordermansArse · 20/08/2020 19:31

Did you get it from Jo Malone or somewhere else?

I am only asking because there have been some fakes which were dangerous.

Laaalaaaa · 20/08/2020 19:32

@combatbarbie

Not sure why people are scoffing at the price... If you can afford it why not?
Exactly. In the world of luxury candles it’s considerably at the lower price end. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ah, I see! I’ve had matches break before, but part way along the wooden bit, so I couldn’t quite visualise it! Sounds like they could be quite a hazard, I’d definitely let them know.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 20/08/2020 19:40

Fucking hell, some of you are being very bloody harsh to the OP.

You might not spend £64 on a candle, I wouldn’t either, but if that’s how she wants to treat herself who are we to judge?

Complain OP. If I buy a luxury item at a hefty price I expect that to be reflected in all aspects of the product, not to be palmed off with something substandard.

nocoolnamesleft · 20/08/2020 19:42

Doesn't one's butler light the candles?
