Jo Malone - to complain re candle damage

Brownthomas13 · 20/08/2020 18:06

I just opened a new candle and the matches that came with it are faulty. The top came off of the match and split into 3 pieces, 2 onto the carpet and 1 onto a dresser. I was dealing with the carpet first and in the meantime the top of the dresser has little burn marks from the match.
It’s antique and not in perfect condition but the burn mark is obvious and I’m pissed.

Can I complain about this? The candle was 64 quid so I’d expect the matches to not burn my furniture.

Is this a wind up?

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 20/08/2020 19:52

I once splashed out on a diptyque candle.
Smelt like disinfectant.
Love a rose one that I bought from Aldi recently

StatementKnickers · 20/08/2020 19:54

They give out those matches free - there's nothing special about them. I don't think it's a legitimate complaint if the actual candle is OK.

SteveArnottsbeadyeyes · 20/08/2020 19:54

Oh to be fair that’s quite different - I thought you meant a the wood split.

FrappuccinoLight · 20/08/2020 19:54

I’ve had a few of their candles (only as gifts or treated myself with birthday money, but I think they are worth every penny, they make me feel special, they last ages and their deep luxurious scent fills the room unlike cheaper brands) and they offered really good customer services the one time I complained. My candle kept smoking black soot out of the flame and like you I thought for 60 this wasn’t acceptable. When I complained they asked for a photo and immediately sent me a replacement. My sister then said I should have just down the wick some more and the sooty smoke would have stopped. I tried this and she was right. So ended up with a free candle. Oops!

I also find their complimentary long black matches generally snap and so I save them for the end when my hand the lighter can no longer reach into the glass jar. But because they are so long I always strike them over the candle not the floor/table because an extremely thin long piece of cheap wood is not guaranteed to snap. So yes you might get a free complimentary candle out of a complaint but I doubt they will replace a dresser and a carpet. Lesson learnt?

FrappuccinoLight · 20/08/2020 20:03

However also just want to say that I also regularly and happily buy ASDA’s copy of the Jo Malone ‘lime basil and mandarin’ candle for just £4 and it is double the size and comes in a lovely glass container with a shiny silver lid (but no complimentary matches!) and although the scent is not as strong, it does have a similar smell and at FOUR POUNDS is a bloody bargain.

I hear the posters who say that the OP should be able to spend her money on what she wants and that is fine.
However £64 is seriously expensive for a candle made from cheap paraffin wax which, when lit, gives of dangerous chemicals.
Not great , particularly if you have children around too.

combatbarbie · 20/08/2020 20:06

I've had loads of candles, aldi, yankee. Jo Malone.... You get what you pay for.

Admittedly my high end ones and even Yankee are gifts (and loads are given in the Estee Lauder employee hampers in summer and Christmas)

You could spend that on a meal out and no one would bat an eyelid.....or a massage.... But fuck me, name a designer label and you're a snob??

ItsIslandTime · 20/08/2020 20:28

@Brownthomas13

Sorry should have said I lit another 3 matches outside and they all were faulty. The head lit but fell off in one piece or split and the lit pieces fell off. It looks like a faulty box of matches. They are larger than normal matches so it left a noticeable burn mark on the dresser.
Have you still got some of the batch of matches left? If so keep some for yourself and send some back to JM. I think you are being reasonable to ask for damages. If it was just the one match that was faulty it would be hard to prove.

Good luck.

BankAngle · 20/08/2020 20:31

Fuck me, that's my food budget for the week. How the other half live.

Mrsmadevans · 20/08/2020 20:38

Antiques dressers...... not worth the broken matches that burnt it . Prices have reduced massively in auction houses.

cabingirl · 20/08/2020 21:00

Their last recall was in 2017 for exactly that issue - this is what they said at the time

The affected matches are identifiable as follows:

Provided with Jo Malone London Candle purchases from August 2014 to the present
DO NOT have any numbers printed on the back of the matchbox following the letters "SAF"
The box and matchsticks are black
If the matchbox DOES have numbers to the right of the letters "SAF", IT IS NOT affected by this recall.

Brownthomas13 · 20/08/2020 21:03

@Mrsmadevans that made me chuckle! On reflection the candle did cost more than the dresser which was bought many, many, many moons ago!

@cabingirl thank you!

Please tell me what dangerous chemicals are given off.
LaurieFairyCake · 20/08/2020 21:06

Yes, I'd complain

missmouse101 · 20/08/2020 21:14

I'd complain OP. But I take it you mean pissed OFF? Saying you are pissed means something else.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 20/08/2020 21:24

I didn't get any matches with my JM candle, should I complain?

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 20/08/2020 21:32

I have a rechargeable candle lighter.

It’s brilliant.

Get one of them

myusernamewastakenbyme · 20/08/2020 21:36

How the fuck does a candle make you feel special....more money than sense comes to mind !!!

Brownthomas13 · 20/08/2020 22:02

@myusernamewastakenbyme it doesn’t make me feel special Confused it just smells nice!

OP posts:
myusernamewastakenbyme · 20/08/2020 22:05

@Brownthomas13 i was referring to someone upthread who said a luxury expensive candle makes them feel special.
I honestly cant think of a bigger waste of money.

www.jomalone.eu/es/en/important-notice

Are you matched part of this recall notice?

Potterpotterpotter · 20/08/2020 22:16

Some people sound so bitter, how it’s their food budget for the week. Who fucking cares.

OP wasn’t spending your money buying it and didn’t ask anyone’s opinion on the price she paid for her candle. She’s not asking for tips on if a Asda £4 candle is better either.

Send an email to the company and see what they say OP.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 20/08/2020 22:28

@Brownthomas13

I’m partial to a Jo Malone candle and have had a fair few over the years. The matches they come with are a tad unpredictable to say the least. Far too easy to strike, if that makes sense? Best kept well out of reach of children!

I agree you get what you pay for and I buy an JM Incense and Embers candle once a year. That’s all I can afford. But in between I buy White Company candles - half the price and pretty effective.

You should definitely get in touch with JM.

combatbarbie · 20/08/2020 22:30

@averyyounggrandmaofsix you didn't get matches!!! Did it come in a box? I love the boxes, use them for kids hair bobbles etc.... Definitely complain!
