Cat scratched baby

Hi there,
Imagine I'm going to be flamed for letting the cat near DD (8m). Please be gentle, am feeling horrible.
We have a rather grumpy elderly cat who for the most part avoids DD. Unfortunately she adores him and now that she's newly crawling likes to follow him around when he occasionally ambles into the kitchen to eat. Normally he jumps on a table if she comes too close but today she managed to grab a handful of fur (I was trying to get her dinner sorted and took my eyes off. I realise I'm a massive dick and I feel uttetly shit😔) and he swiped her arm. He hasn't broken the skin but there's a white scratch mark. Do I need to see the doc? If he'd broken the skin there'd be no question, I'd take her to the walk in straight away.
I feel like the worst parent ever. I'm going to need to rehome the cat aren't I?
Fuck :(

He did her a favour.

She has learned that if you grab an animal it might hurt you. Consequence free lesson.

I have always had a cat. With babies and toddlers and kids. They work it out. Someone's tail might get pulled, someone's arm might get scratched.

Someone's bed will get slept on, someone will eat any monsters that might be hiding in the cupboard, someone will provide a soft furry body to cry into, someone will snuggle up and purr and so on.

You take the good with the bad.

Being a new mum is hard. Go easy on yourself.

Are you just looking for an excuse to get rid of your poor cat? Because that’s what this post comes across like.

Dongdingdong

RTFT. Eyeroll.

@SideEyeing
How was the baby after?
I've just googled cat scrammed my baby because that's what has just happened to mine 😭 she's only 9 weeks old, and the first time it's happened.
He attacked her leg I went to the toilet and he was on the way out the window, so assumed he was going out. Lesson learned!!!

missmopple · 19/07/2021 12:47

@Chance2020

This thread is almost a year old so you will get loads of replies to the original OP from people who haven't read any of the comments.

Happylittlethoughts · 19/07/2021 13:07

Some harsh people on here! Its alokay. Baby and cat have survived and both will avoid each other a little bit more.
Your cat will be fine. There are lots of things you might need to tell your exploring daughter not to touch.
Hope you feel better.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 19/07/2021 13:15

DD (rising 2) got a bat to the cheek/tiny scratch last week, from her beloved kitty. DD was not bothered, 100% had it coming to her for poking the cat in the face, and has learned her lesson.

When cats bat with really extruding their claws they aren't really trying to do harm, it's a little warning to the child to bugger off.

Keep your cat, watch the baby and make sure you give the cat opportunity to escape through open doors etc

Sprig1 · 19/07/2021 13:22

It's a life lesson. Your child will v soon learn that if you grab a cat it will scratch. I wouldn't worry about the current scratch if the skin isn't even broken.

veeeeh · 19/07/2021 13:33

As if having a child is not hard work enough!

Rehome the baby quick, cats will always be our masters LOL.

Personally I would not have pets of any variety around babies/kids, life lessons or not, it is just too much hard work and fraught with potential danger, and cats always get their way in the end anyway.

soirritating · 19/07/2021 13:38

I don’t know why you’re getting all the first time mum comments cos I still panic about the second one.

Same. I'm a more anxious mum second time around actually. The first time mum comments get boring after a while ...

Aprilx · 19/07/2021 13:39

@ILoveFood87

Why would you rehome the cat!? How horrible are you!!
I knew as soon as I saw the thread title that the OP would mention rehoming the cat. 😡

@Aprilx

But she didn't.
Everything was fine. ALMOST A YEAR AGO

GreenCrayon · 19/07/2021 13:59

WHY THE FUCK DO PEOPLE CONTINUE TO RESSURECT ZOMBIE THREADS. Angry

This thread is a year old, the OP probably doesn't wish to relive the experience and if they wanted to update us to what happened they would have done a year ago. Honestly so fed up of people posting on zombie threads for no reason.

LemonPeonies · 19/07/2021 16:01

You need to keep them apart and put the cat in a separate room, especially if you have to take your eyes off the baby. Lucky it was only a mild scratch tbh.

Cloudninenine · 19/07/2021 16:23

Doesn’t need a drs appointment. You don’t need to rehome the cat 🙄 be vigilant for a couple of weeks til he learns she’s mobile and keep telling her no when she approaches him and they’ll learn to rub along together.

Seeing as the OP posted almost a year ago, the "couple of weeks" is well past.
chaosrabbitland · 19/07/2021 16:44

@Somethingsnappy

Why is she horrible for contemplating rehoming the cat?? The scratch could have been her baby's eyes. There are other possibilities too, yes, but keep your insults to yourself, ILoveFood87.
Because its the way so many times that when a kid arrives a family pet is dumped out of its home as its suddenly a , problem . Hence its one of the reasons why rescues are so damn full all the time
2bazookas · 19/07/2021 17:17

wash it with soapy water.

DC has probably gone off the cat now, with no harm done; good result all round.

dementedpixie · 19/07/2021 18:56

@Chance2020 you need to start a new thread if you want answers to your question. Everyone is answering the OP from a year ago

Uramaki · 19/07/2021 19:07

ZOMBIEEEE

Chance2020 · 19/07/2021 19:25

@GreenCrayon
Sorry I didn't know that I couldn't post on original posts and that it would come back to the original question 🤦🏻‍♀️😬so sorry everyone

myotherusernameistaken · 20/07/2021 09:35

@Chance2020

Well you "can" post on old threads, but it just demonstrates that people will read the OP, not look at the date and wade in with their opinion without bothering to read a single one of the replies.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/07/2021 09:40

The baby will learn, the cat did a gentle 'back off' scratch if it's only a white one and didn't break the skin.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/07/2021 09:41

Zombie thread Hmm

CSIblonde · 20/07/2021 13:02

You dont need to be shooing the cat away, just be vigilant & swiftly pick your child up if you think she's going to pester him. If he has regular meal or snack times as they usually do, make sure he can eat in peace. He'll avoid her most of the time anyway .
