Just that really. Why do cheese toasties made in a toasty machine not turn out nice if you use brown bread? What’s the science behind that?

@MrsOldma because brown bread is Envy (not envy) Grin

PurpleDaisies · 19/08/2020 12:51

They taste fine to me.

Bargebill19 · 19/08/2020 12:52

No idea, but I totally agree!

MarcelineMissouri · 19/08/2020 12:52

I don’t know why but you are correct. I happily have brown bread for sandwiches but toasties must be white!!

chipsandpeas · 19/08/2020 12:52

im the same, its the brown bread, it doesnt taste right with a toastie

thisstooshallpass · 19/08/2020 12:52

Agree. The bread is too 'hokey' so full of air. It needs proper warbies thick cut white.

MrsOldma · 19/08/2020 12:53

@PurpleDaisies do you not font the cheese goes funny? It’s like it gets absorbed into the bread or something

No, the cheese is fine.

Ninkanink · 19/08/2020 12:54

It’s just not the right bread for it. No idea why.

If DH fancies melty cheese and we only have wholemeal bread I make cheese on toast instead of toasties as I find that works much better.

Toast the bread first, then add cheese, Worcestershire sauce (if desired), and finally put it under the grill.

Feeling like Martin Freeman right now from 0:26 onwards

Picklypickles · 19/08/2020 12:55

Toasty machines are rubbish, they just squash the bread until its all flat and hard. I don't mind brown or white bread but I've started making toasties in my griddle pan recently and they turn out so much nicer than from a toasty machine.

MrsOldma · 19/08/2020 12:55

@thisstooshallpass yes its definitely something like that! Too holy or wheaty

OP posts:
MrsOldma · 19/08/2020 12:57

@Ninkanink yeah for cheese on toast it’s ok but it goes all wrong in the machine

OP posts:
NonsensicalWitch · 19/08/2020 12:57

Oh I can't say I've ever noticed this, but I haven't used a toastie machine since the early noughties, when my mum had one.

They are fine, in fact, I think I prefer them to white, done under the grill or on the stove.

Lockdownfatigue · 19/08/2020 12:57

I like them better! I like the texture of the bread. And white bread tastes of nothing!

MrsOldma · 19/08/2020 13:00

@NonsensicalWitch you’ve not had a toasty since the 00s???? We go through phases of not having one for months and then suddenly it’s every damn day ooh can I have a toasty?

We don't have them often tbh, but I do like them. New don't have room for extra kitchen equipment in our wee tiny kitchen, so we just do them on the stove or sometimes under the grill when we have them. Also, dh hates cheese Hmm, so I only make them for me and dc1.

Trailing1 · 19/08/2020 13:04

I wondered the same this morning!

AdoptAdaptImprove · 19/08/2020 13:04

I do mine in the George Forman, and brown bread just doesn’t get the same degree of crispness offered by white sliced.

Ninkanink · 19/08/2020 13:05

I don’t make toasties in a machine as I don’t have one, I just make them in a pan on the hob.

NonsensicalWitch · 19/08/2020 13:05

ShebaShimmyShake · 19/08/2020 13:05

I agree. Much prefer brown seedy bread in all other circumstances but if it's a toastie, it must be bleached white stuff.

You see, I'm not mad on seedy, but prefer wholegrain for most things. The only time I.prefer white is when it's the amazing, crusty kind for with soup or stews, or the base of a pizza.
