To ask why brown bread cheese toasties are so shit?

Just that really. Why do cheese toasties made in a toasty machine not turn out nice if you use brown bread? What’s the science behind that?

Brown bread just doesn't go with certain things imo.

Toasties, beans on toast, bacon sandwiches are white bread.

Sandwiches, toast, eggs, brown bread is nice.

I'm glad you've said this op because it's justified what I've always thought. I love brown bread but it doesn't go with some stuff.

You are so right about the bread though and I have pondered that same thought before. It's a completely different outcome and actually quite unpleasant with brown bread.

Tastes fine to me. White bread tastes of nothing.

Bacon sandwiches - definitely white bread. That's a good point.

Oh and sausage sandwiches, burgers, hotdogs etc too. Better with white imo.

It's the same as bacon sandwiches. They just don't taste right if not on plastic white bread. Still good obviously just not right.

No idea. I love brown bread but prefer white for things like french toast.

Brown bread is just wrong in general.

Brown bread toasties are not good, the bread is too soft and just doesn't toast right. Warby's Toastie or Hovis Farmhouse for me, same with bacon butties, white bread all the way. The only thing I like brown or seeded bread is cold sandwiches, especially tuna

Untoasted - brown

I agree. Love brown bread generally but not in a toast. The brown bread goes sort of sweaty whereas the white crisp up.

I think witch means just not using a toasty machine rather than not having a toasty ever.

I didn't replace mine when it broke when Dp somehow managed to melt plastic in it! but I still do toasties every so often in the George Forman.

I occasionally really want an old school toasty machine one but don't want to buy a whole machine for my once a year fancy!

There are times when only white bread will do. Cheese on toast is an example of this.

Toasty machines are rubbish, they just squash the bread until its all flat and hard. I don't mind brown or white bread but I've started making toasties in my griddle pan recently and they turn out so much nicer than from a toasty machine.

Yes and they make the edges of the sandwich rock hard and a lot of the cheese leaks out so there's hardly anything left inside the sandwich.

I had to vote YABU because you've just made me buy a toastie machine. But yeah, most brown bread doesn't work for toastie, it never gets crisp enough, so you don't get the exquisite agony of crunching into something hotter than lava.

I believe that white bread is more refined and has more available gluten. The gluten has that gluey quality that makes the bread stretchy, like the cheese. Then, when you have the toasted bits floating in the gluey gluten and cheese mix, there is a kind of delicious harmony that is transformative. Whereas, when you have whole wheat bread, there is no transormation. It just sits there being sour and rocky saying, hello, here I am, I am not going to change. There is less melding of ingredients and no harmony.

I use brown bread but it has to be granary, none of that horrible wholemeal stuff. I make toasties in a frying pan tho, not sure if that makes a difference

Yes tbf I use granary bread as well.

For me cheese in general goes best on white bread. The flavour of wholemeal overpowers the cheese. Wholemeal goes better with meat or fish imho.
