To ask why brown bread cheese toasties are so shit?

Just that really. Why do cheese toasties made in a toasty machine not turn out nice if you use brown bread? What’s the science behind that?

@Fishfingersandwichpleasenone of life’s little mysteries right?

I think it’s the bread.

I love brown bread toast, but made as a toasty, it doesn’t seem to have the je ne sais quoi that white bread does.

foxtiger · 19/08/2020 19:48

YANBU to ask, but I don't agree with you. I always prefer brown bread over white bread unless it's very fresh crusty bakery-style white bread. It just goes to show we all have different preferences!

blubberball · 19/08/2020 20:21

I prefer brown bread every time, but no one else in my house likes it. Sad

Mrsjayy · 19/08/2020 20:22

Toasted cheese. Is better with brown bread BB toasties are rank !

hastingsmua1 · 19/08/2020 20:24

Nocebo effect (opposite of placebo effect) perhaps? It’s due to your negative bias/expectations towards brown bread

MrsOldma · 19/08/2020 20:27

@hastingsmua1 I actually love brown bread and only ever have white if it’s a toasty.

I’ve never heard of the nocebo effect but I’m off for a google thank you!

Brown bread anything is shit.

NonsensicalWitch · 19/08/2020 20:32

Did anyone else's mum make brown bread ice cream? Or was my mum playing a cruel joke on me and my siblings?

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 19/08/2020 20:33

Oooh I love them! But the cheese has to be grated and mixed with spring onions and a blob of mayo.

sugagi · 19/08/2020 20:34

@NonsensicalWitch Shock i must know more!

MrsOldma · 19/08/2020 20:34

@NonsensicalWitch I’m sure I’ve seen that on master chef so your mum is v. fancy

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 19/08/2020 20:34

My kids absolutely love brown bread for sandwiches.

Mrsjayy · 19/08/2020 20:36

My aunty used to make brown bread ice cream it has made a comeback I'm not.keen

NonsensicalWitch · 19/08/2020 20:46

@sugagi, it was sweet ice cream, but with brown bread crumbs through it?

My mum was actually quite fancy! Didn't rub off though, much to her dismay Grin.

GiantKitten · 19/08/2020 20:49

I make toasties in the frying pan with BOB & they're lovely Smile

Use wholemeal for everything else though (& BOB is as white as we go)

(Currently using Tesco's oatmeal & barley bread instead of wholemeal - it makes wonderful sarnies but very dry toast Confused)

MintyCedric · 19/08/2020 20:52

I have a toastie machine that also has panini plates...it is a thing of beauty!

NonsensicalWitch · 19/08/2020 20:52

Ooooo the luxury of panninis on demand! I bloody love a pannini Envy (yes, envy)!

pinkbalconyrailing · 19/08/2020 20:55

try it with fine rye bread.
and stilton.
and onion marmelade.
you are welcome.

tarasmalatarocks · 19/08/2020 20:59

I don’t like bacon or sausage sandwiches on brown either — basically I don’t like brown/wholemeal bread with warm cooked food yet love it with say a cold chicken sandwich

Stop it! I'm hungry now! Dh the cheese hater would never forgive me for cooking stilton in front of him though...

I make bacon butties with halved piccolo tomatoes on wholemeal with lots of butter. Nectar Grin
MintyCedric · 19/08/2020 21:34

Best panini - smoked bacon, brie and sweet chilli jelly

ODFOx · 19/08/2020 21:41

No!!! They are so much tastier and nuttier and satisfying made with whole meal bread. The only downside is that the bread is so delicious that it can make the cheese a bit bland unless it's really mature. Some thinly sliced onion in the toastier can really help with that.

I agree. I only buy vintage cheddar though as that's what DS likes and he eats most of it.
