To ask why brown bread cheese toasties are so shit?

Just that really. Why do cheese toasties made in a toasty machine not turn out nice if you use brown bread? What’s the science behind that?

Toasted sandwiches made with granary are the best! Not in a machine though, in a press thingy.
Cheese, tomato, pesto....

MrsOldma · 19/08/2020 14:44

@Durgasarrow there’s the science I was looking for!!!

You need thinner brown bread slices and apply butter on the outside.

ClareBlue · 19/08/2020 14:46

Just tried it. You are right it was too dry and crispy and the cheese burnt tasting. Had a while one and great.

Oooooh a live experiment Grin!

Could more butter be the answer? I mean, more butter is my answer to many things, but you know.

Butter on the outside is hands down the answer to this problem.
Someone9 · 19/08/2020 15:07

I occasionally really want an old school toasty machine one but don't want to buy a whole machine for my once a year fancy!

I bought mine for less than a tenner- absolutely worth the investment IMO Grin

0DimSumMum0 · 19/08/2020 15:07

Do you butter the outside? I do agree about the bread but I find that if I butter it it is goes nice and nutty.

familyof4boys · 19/08/2020 15:17

Agree with the starch comment but also wonder if there’s more sugar in white bread, that might crisp up to give a better crunch on white bread? But yes, you’re absolutely right. Brown bread toasties just don’t work- it’s a fact!

30daysoflight · 19/08/2020 15:25

Sourdough with cheese in the toastie machine. Need a strong arm to close it but you don't need to eat again for 24 hours Grin

Gemma2019 · 19/08/2020 15:25

If you make a toasted cheese sandwich with wholemeal bread, the cheese just seems to disappear into thin air. On white bread it is so lovely, with an abundance of melted cheese. I had no idea that other people also suffered in this way.

MrsOldma · 19/08/2020 15:42

I thought everyone buttered the outside of the bread? Surely it would stick otherwise

TwentySixPointTwo · 19/08/2020 15:46

@ohffs66

I use brown bread but it has to be granary, none of that horrible wholemeal stuff. I make toasties in a frying pan tho, not sure if that makes a difference
What witchcraft is this?!?! Buttery, fried bread with cheese in? Is that it?

I shall be a stone heavier by next weekend for I am about to eat a dozen...

OneForMeToo · 19/08/2020 15:49

Has to be white bread. Also we sometimes make pizza pockets in it when we have made too much dough and the kids announce they don’t want actual pizza but apparently a pocket is acceptable Grin

Onesailwait · 19/08/2020 15:56

White bread, slather the outsides with mayonnaise & cook on a griddle or frying pan. Crispy on the outside gooey in the middle perfect grilled cheese. Bacon sandwiches, fried egg & sausages sandwiches don't work on brown either.

Oblomov20 · 19/08/2020 18:07

Agree. It has to be white.

iklboo · 19/08/2020 18:21

Aw now I want a tuna melt toastie!

PercyKirke · 19/08/2020 18:24

Because you are using inferior brown bread. Mine taste great.

MrsOldma · 19/08/2020 18:28

@PercyKirke what brown bread would you recommend?

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 19/08/2020 18:40

I had a whole meal pitta cheese and chutney toastie for lunch. It was very nice.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 19/08/2020 18:44

I have a dualit toaster with a sandwich cage (so bread doesn't get squashed) wholemeal toasties are great.
Never buy 'brown' bread - only wholemeal.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 19/08/2020 18:45

& rather than buttering the outside of the sandwich, I just give it a squirt with spray oil.

GisAFag · 19/08/2020 18:45

Because brown bread is disgusting

Fishfingersandwichplease · 19/08/2020 18:58

Omg l always wondered this too!!!

Zaphodsotherhead · 19/08/2020 19:05

I find brown (well, wholemeal or seeded) is too 'dry' for toasties. Similarly fried bread - it doesn't matter how much butter you add, it makes a bitty, dry-texture. White bread is the only thing for toasties and fried bread.

Sandwiches and toast, wholemeal is fab.
