AIBU to ask if people still think COVID-19 is fake

Just heard my elderly neighbour speaking to a mother neighbour saying "it's about time all this SHITE come to an end now". The other neighbour agreed saying "yes, people should have realised by now it's all FAKE"

AIBU to ask do people still believe this virus is fake?
I couldn't believe what I was hearing from the 2 of them.

yes my flat earther, antivaxer, ancient alien conspiracy theorist step sil and his "group " can't believe that people are still falling for it all ShockConfusedGrin

walksen · 18/08/2020 12:54

You have to bear in mind that the UK as a whole has only had an estimated 7 to 10% people infected and some areas much lower than this. Of those infected 50% may have no symptoms.
Lots of people will not know anyone who has suffered Ill effects of covid.

doodledo92 · 18/08/2020 12:55

Yes forgot about my 16 year old ds saying to me yesterday when I asked him to sanitise. Mum its all fake stop being paranoid!

What makes them think this, I don't understand??

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 18/08/2020 12:55

I take it you don't use Facebook.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 18/08/2020 12:55

Yes someone I know thinks the symptoms are caused by 5g, and that it's deliberate so everyone in the world will get a microchip put in them when they get tested.

The government are more than welcome to track me going between work, school, tesco and home if they want Confused

doodledo92 · 18/08/2020 12:57

@walksen my bil mum had it. Well think she did, never got tested!
She was seriously ill in bed for a week. She had all the symptoms and said she's never felt like that in her life and really thought she wouldn't pull through!
My ds knows this and says was just a bad case of flu!

OP posts:
doodledo92 · 18/08/2020 12:59

I've also heard people mention 5g!

I do use Facebook but don't really read the crap people put on, just casually scroll through

Tootletum · 18/08/2020 13:02

I've seen lots of this on Facebook including from neighbours. I guess there's a fine line between "fake" and "massively over egging the response". Of course it's not fake but I can see why people are getting so frustrated. They're losing everything to a disease with a mortality rate nearly as low as flu. Unfortunately, it's also a bit more random than flu and more infectious. I've no idea any more what balance to strike, I do think the economic impact has a price for many years to come, and people don't seem willing to accept that there is a trade-off between managing illness and killing our way of life.

ClearTheDecks · 18/08/2020 13:04

Yes yabu because there are still the folk who believe the earth is flat. And the eccentrics meet up on the internet now and seem to be recruiting!

bobbiester · 18/08/2020 13:05

All the people I know with relatives who've died from it don't think it's fake.

People who've not had this experience, or met people who have, are more likely to think it's fake.

AnaadiNitya · 18/08/2020 13:05

This.
doodledo92 · 18/08/2020 13:06

I did actually see a post on Facebook. Someone saying DO NOT have the vaccine when it comes out!
This is another scam to get rid of the population it is NOT going to treat COVID it WILL kill you! ConfusedHmm

I don’t know anyone at all who has had it, but I don’t think it’s fake.

It's stupid comments like that which are the problem. Yes, numbers are similar, but it killed 45k in just a couple of months DESPITE the lockdown, precautions etc. Highly likely it would have been 450K if left to run wild. 45K in two months is VERY different to 45K over an average year. People need to understand exponential growth which is what was happening in February and March.

Exponential growth. Every so many days, cases double. The higher the transmission rate, the less days to double. Before lockdown, it was about every 3 days. It's much slower now, but if you don't stop those little numbers, they become bigger numbers pretty quickly.

I've got a FB friend who thinks its all fake and buys hook, line and sinker into the conspiracy madness. Haven't seen her for years but she is bright and well educated and used to work in quite a high-profile and demanding job.

I'm quite disturbed tbh. Its one thing when its no mark weed-smokers but when sensible people start buying into it its another matter.

Badbadbunny · 18/08/2020 13:11

Intelligent people still believe the Earth is flat and that God/Allah or whoever is sat in the sky watching us!

Inthebleakmidwinteriwouldsing · 18/08/2020 13:13

Up their nose? Grin

I made the mistake of reading the comments on a news article today and apparently it’s made up so “they” can offload heaps of old flu vaccines that are sitting around gathering dust.

I’m always intrigued by people who believe in an international governmental conspiracy as most of the world leaders I see on the news these days are barely capable of finding their own arses with both hands.

Soubriquet · 18/08/2020 13:17

I don’t believe it’s fake but I do believe we may have over exaggerated it

Such as this hospital that was built and never used.

Kids out of school for months

Places that are closed and still can’t open

Acrasia · 18/08/2020 13:17

The tracking microchip theory always makes me wonder if these people realise that most carry around a tracking device willingly, in fact a lot of the time it will be the device they are posting from.

ClearTheDecks · 18/08/2020 13:18

I have never known any religious person who thinks the earth is flat. I know mostly Christian born agains and British Muslims. Are there any specific groups that do?

Inthebleakmidwinteriwouldsing · 18/08/2020 13:20

That too actually. I wonder where they think the up-to-the-minute figures come from on how busy a shop is right now or which roads are congested?
ClearTheDecks · 18/08/2020 13:20

Yes to pp!

The conspiracy believers do have crazy amounts of faith in the organizational powers of ...whoever is running it all.

StonedRoses · 18/08/2020 13:22

Of course it’s fake. As a doctor I know it. We rounded up people, mostly those no one cared about. The ill, the frail, the elderly, dissidents. Then we sedated them and filled up our ITUs with them. We were so successful we had to overspill into several other wards. To show my enthusiasm for the project I gave up my Easter holiday I’d saved for years for to spend every spare hour in the hospital, working harder than ever.
The project was such a success we even managed to recruit colleagues in Italy, France, Spain, USA to join in. Like the moon landing hoax it has been kept secret despite hundreds of thousands of people being in on the secret. They know they’ll be next in ITU if they blab. Then we randomly select 30% and turn off their ventilators as a warning to the others

I don’t know about religious groups but Flat Earthers are definitely a thing.

There are also groups who believe that certain things have changed eg they don’t remember New Zealand being all the way down there ConfusedGrin
