AIBU to ask if people still think COVID-19 is fake

Just heard my elderly neighbour speaking to a mother neighbour saying "it's about time all this SHITE come to an end now". The other neighbour agreed saying "yes, people should have realised by now it's all FAKE"

AIBU to ask do people still believe this virus is fake?
I couldn't believe what I was hearing from the 2 of them.

@walksen

You have to bear in mind that the UK as a whole has only had an estimated 7 to 10% people infected and some areas much lower than this. Of those infected 50% may have no symptoms. Lots of people will not know anyone who has suffered Ill effects of covid.
I don't know anyone who has suffered ill effects of smallpox – I don't think it's fake. I've never seen my own kidney but I wouldn't mock a doctor for telling me I've got one.

The "I've never seen it so it's not real" brigade don't have much of a leg to stand on.

StonedRoses · 18/08/2020 13:23

I’m sorry but any suggestion it’s a fake makes me fucking fuming. We can all debate the best way to deal with it but the suggestion it’s a hoax is a huge fucking insult to all those who died and all those who did so much to treat people

SleepingStandingUp · 18/08/2020 13:25

"yes, people should have realised by now it's all FAKE"

AIBU to ask do people still believe this virus is fake?

Yes, tabu, because you've just answered your own qn.

LucyWarlowsRightHand · 18/08/2020 13:25

I want to laugh at the way you’ve put it @StonedRoses but of course it’s not funny.

Our Dutch PM was so devoted to the cause that he refused all contact with his elderly mother and she passed away during lockdown without being able to have her family around her Sad Now that’s dedication eh?

doodledo92 · 18/08/2020 13:27

I agree with you all certainly don't think it's fake!

Also heard a lot of conspiracy theories about it being "man made" and one big set up!

OP posts:
ClearTheDecks · 18/08/2020 13:28

Oh yes, I have come across flat earthers online. I just don't associate the belief with any of the members of religions I know.

There was an online theory about Finland's existence wasn't there?

Anyway is it not all funded by the Putin's Russia?

MintyMabel · 18/08/2020 13:29

Lots of people will not know anyone who has suffered Ill effects of covid.

I don’t know anyone who has been to Wales but I’m pretty certain it exists.

There are a whole load of ill educated people who will believe any kind of conspiracy, but I really can’t understand why anyone would think the entire world population is being locked down with the economy tanking, leading to a massive recession as some kind of conspiracy theory. Who exactly is supposed to be gaining something from that?

HowFastIsTooFast · 18/08/2020 13:32

I certainly don't think it's fake (despite not knowing a single person who's so much as had a positive test) but I'm also very concerned about the world economy going forward and wonder how long we can go on for before the knock on effect of unemployment, poverty and damage to mental health starts to cost more lives among younger generations that COVID probably would have.

OpalExtra · 18/08/2020 13:32

I've never seen a broken bone... they're obviously fake too.

FunnysInLaJardin · 18/08/2020 13:33

@Badbadbunny

They're losing everything to a disease with a mortality rate nearly as low as flu

It's stupid comments like that which are the problem. Yes, numbers are similar, but it killed 45k in just a couple of months DESPITE the lockdown, precautions etc. Highly likely it would have been 450K if left to run wild. 45K in two months is VERY different to 45K over an average year. People need to understand exponential growth which is what was happening in February and March.

Exponential growth. Every so many days, cases double. The higher the transmission rate, the less days to double. Before lockdown, it was about every 3 days. It's much slower now, but if you don't stop those little numbers, they become bigger numbers pretty quickly.

RoseTintedAtuin · 18/08/2020 13:34

Ah well the “man made” is a very different question. We are very capable of genetically manipulating viruses and biological warfare is still an open field so it would be likely the Big players are competing to be best. And look how effective it would be as a weapon! It is unusual for a virus to adapt for human to human transmission quickly and this one seemed to do it in weeks. So I’d still think that idea has some credit to it. It has certainly been debunked that this came from a bat sold at the Wuhan market and spread from there.

doodledo92 · 18/08/2020 13:36

@RoseTintedAtuin I agree with you. All this devastation around the world came from a bat!!
That's something I don't believe

OP posts:
HOkieCOkie · 18/08/2020 13:38

I don’t think it’s fake, but I’m not buying into the hysteria that’s been going on.

ClearTheDecks · 18/08/2020 13:41

Did the 1919 flu not come from chickens and pigs being kept in close quarters in wartime France?

I'm of a never say never frame of mind.

ClearTheDecks · 18/08/2020 13:43

Another coronavirus, MERS comes from camels.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 18/08/2020 13:46

At the beginning a number of people I know claimed it was fake

Many of those now claim it’s really not that serious and are anti mask wearing and witter on about their civil liberties being taken away

Thankfully apart from one is a close friend so I can easily distance myself from their nonsense

LonelyGir1 · 18/08/2020 13:47

Wow, do they not know any doctors?!

FaithinWashing · 18/08/2020 13:52

I don't think it is fake, despite not knowing anyone personally who has been seriously ill or died. There is a virus that has made some people seriously ill and has killed some people.

I do think we need to put it behind us and get on with a normal life, with no restrictions.

This virus is now just one of the many that circulate amongst humans, and like those other viruses it the symptoms it causes vary in severity, from people just carrying the virus to causing fatal complications.

Hundreds of people die in the UK every single day some of them old/ill some of them from previously undiagnosed conditions some of them perfectly healthy and killed in accidents as a result of crime.

Life is not safe - death is inevitable and unpredictable.

We didn't live in fear of this fact before we need to learn not to be again.

FizzyPink · 18/08/2020 13:54

Yes MIL appears to think so Hmm she’s very alternative and into conspiracy theories but also a teacher so you’d think she’d have some common sense!

Hoggleludo · 18/08/2020 13:54

The day the law came j to play that we all had to wear masks in the shops. The Friday

I was behind 2 women who thought that there was no reason to as Covid had gone away apparently!!

Hoggleludo · 18/08/2020 13:55

@ClearTheDecks

Apparently it was a human with the flu. A bird with the flu

Who met the same pig! Highly interesting. The studies conducted! Worth a read if you’ve a medical background.

ClearTheDecks · 18/08/2020 13:55

Well things ARE edging back towards opening up.

Schools are open in Scotland and soon to be in England. I know lots more people back at work or settling into more home working.

Shops, pubs and cafes open on our high street.

ClearTheDecks · 18/08/2020 13:56

The smoking pig..

ClearTheDecks · 18/08/2020 13:57

Thing is if there was a Louis Pasteur lab in Amiens you'd say it had been created there.

Hoggleludo · 18/08/2020 13:59

@Acrasia

Yes. Or those who have Alexa

My husband works in that industry. He’s said we’ve never to get an Alexa or google play!
