i literally don't drink plain water. i drink a can of coke zero with my lunch and another with my dinner, i try to drink green tea with my breakfast but.. this almost never happens and i give in and have an iced coffee/milk tea (cold, milky tea), it's really bad, i get headaches but i can't bring myself to drink water. I hate the taste of water but last year I bought a bottle with a chamber in the middle for fruit and it's changed everything. Fav is cucumber water. I've noticed my headaches are gone, I'm generally fuller so eat less and my skin is much, much better too

JustPickleRick · 17/08/2020 16:23

I didn't drink water at all when I was growing up and now I have 2 different kidney conditions with both kidneys full of stones... its irreversible too. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. If I knew the damage I was causing then I'd have drank more!
Get yourself a Chillis bottle, it actually helps make the water taste nicer!

Enderman · 17/08/2020 16:24

You don’t drink enough that’s for sure and it’s all caffeine no wonder you have headaches.

You don’t have to drink water but what about herbal teas, peppermint tea, squash. There are lots of things. Opt for decaf sometimes.

HayP · 17/08/2020 16:24

Try slices of cucumber in your water with ice!!!

tiredanddangerous · 17/08/2020 16:25

You don't have to drink water if you don't want to op. Any fluid will do...squash/tea whatever. You could have decaf tea if you're worried about too much caffeine.

Nobody needs to be drinking litres of water every day.

whiplashy · 17/08/2020 16:26

don’t be ridiculous

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 17/08/2020 16:26

People are a bit obsessive with getting the “2/3 litres a day” in but your hydration comes from anything you ingest, food included. And a lot will depend on your level of activity, if you’re in an office job where you rarely move, compared to someone exerting energy physically you’re not going to be sweating as much and requiring less water (and food) as a result.
Your pee is a good indication of hydration. If it’s straw coloured / yellowish / amber that’s good. Anything darker you’re in danger of being dehydrated and anything too clear you’re drinking too much and it’s just coming out the other end, probably a lot more frequently than you need to which can also cause issues.
Your headaches could be from the caffeine in your cokes and coffees, it could be dehydration (although if you’ve been drinking this little for a while I’m sure by now you would be seeing some issues cropping up surrounding long term dehydration), or it could be unrelated. It’s worth getting the headaches checked out though. Daily headaches shouldn’t be common.

Wecumasathree · 17/08/2020 16:27

Erm. Google “kidney stones”

That should fix it.

I drink litres of liquid a day and very quickly feel like shot of I don’t. I am amazed how little some people drink and they must be constantly dehydrated.

I get awful brain fog and headaches if my fluid levels drop.

Graphic, but if you wee isn’t pretty much clear at some point in the day then you probably aren’t drinking enough.

Soubriquet · 17/08/2020 16:28

I don’t like water either

I’ll drink either sprite, tea or lucozade squash through the day.

ThatBitch · 17/08/2020 16:28

My dd doesn't drink anything at all when left to her own devices, I've ended up getting a small cup (literally 4 or 5 mouthfuls) and setting her a 45 min timer where she has to drink the cup full. Because it's little and often she can do it and the taste doesn't matter. She is much healthier, more hydrated and generally in a better mode now! I really think you just need to force yourself. How about a few drops of squash or elderflower cordial if you really can't stand the taste then wean yourself off until it is weaker?

Jarofflies · 17/08/2020 16:30

You sound like my husband! He wonders why he is always a bit tired and headaches and doesn't believe me that drinking more would help.

I'm not that fussed on plain water tbh, but I drink lots of weak diluting juice. Its really worth the effort, I feel so much better when I'm well hydrated. I still have a couple of instant coffees and a coke most days too though!

KatherineJaneway · 17/08/2020 16:30

Is is all temperatures of water? I find water only pleasurable to drink if fridge cold.

StrawberrySquash · 17/08/2020 16:30

Try sparkling or very cold. Or try a bit of squash, cordial that you gradually make dilute over time. Or leave some rosemary or cucumber in it to infuse and then try it. They have a surprising amount of effect. Or just down a glass at a couple of scheduled times a day. I don't like milk, but if I needed to get it down me I reckon I could by not thinking about it too much.

susandelgado · 17/08/2020 16:31

I have the same problem. I drink sparkling water from Lidl, 39p a bottle, usually with lemon squash. I also have filtered water in my fridge, which isn't bad, but I'm always being told off by my dd for not drinking enough Sad

Quaagars · 17/08/2020 16:33

Is that all you drink in a day?!
You must be so dehydrated, no wonder you get headaches.
I'm the opposite - I love water, big glass straight from the tap earlier as was thirsty and needed it lol!
If you don't like it fair enough, but surely there's some other ways of getting fluids in?
What about squash, splash of fruit cordial, would you drink it then?
Fruit teas? Tea? Coffee?
Must be something you like!

WyfOfBathe · 17/08/2020 16:33

I don't like plain water either and rarely drink it, but I still drink quite a lot of liquid during the day.

If your headaches are coming from dehydration, you don't need to start drinking plain water, but you do need to drink more. Try squash, milk, flavoured water, fizzy water, lemonade, fruit tea, decaf coffee, iced tea, fruit juice...

Elmo311 · 17/08/2020 16:34

Hi OP,

I'm the same; but I have about 3 cans of Pepsi Max a day.

I will sometimes have some sparkling water with cordial and that helps a bit.

PhilCornwall1 · 17/08/2020 16:35

I don't drink water either, never have as an adult. I don't count the number of mugs of coffee I drink in a day, but it will be an awful lot. At least 3 cafetières worth in the morning and tea in the afternoon/evening.

It is what it is for me. I can't say it concerns me at all.

Wonderingwhy27 · 17/08/2020 16:36

I’m the same OP. I’m never able to drink water the taste of it makes me gag. I’ve tried so many times but I just can’t. I also can’t bear cucumber for the same reason. I still drink 3 litres a day but have a small amount of sugar free squash with it.

Starbuggy · 17/08/2020 16:37

I think the issue is more you’re not drinking enough more than not drinking water

I never drink plain water unless there’s no other option. I have either squash or Diet Coke (to the horror of many on MN I’m sure). But I don’t get headaches or feel dehydrated because I drink plenty.

You’re an adult, I think it’s better to drink a proper amount of squash/tea/whatever then to not drink enough because you’re forcing yourself to have plain water when you don’t like it

Nottherealslimshady · 17/08/2020 16:37

I dont drink a lot of water. I drink water from the bathroom tap morning and night, have one or cups of decaf tea and drink decaf diet coke through the day. Our kitchen tap water is rank, might be worth getting a water filter tbh

DriftGames · 17/08/2020 16:41

I've always been awful for drinking. My mum used to force me to drink a glass of squash before school/going out because I wouldn't drink at all during the day. I never felt thirsty or dehydrated. It was only last year when I fell pregnant that I started drinking more. I now make sure I drink 2l of water a day as I breastfeed so if I'm dehydrated, baby suffers. I find having a large bottle of water to carry everywhere with me works, or I'd drink one glass and never refill.

Colom · 17/08/2020 16:41

It's a real pain in the arse trying to get 2litres of water in per day I find. I have taken to marking my consumption on a white board on my fridge and this serves as a visual reminder. It's been easy during covid and on days I'm at home with the DC but as soon as I'm back to busy normality I just forget and a whole day will have passed and I'll have had a couple of teas/coffees and that's it.

I do feel much better drinking it though - the difference in my skin is significant but the constant trip to the toilet is a total nuisance.

I don't remember everyone swilling litres of water when I was young?

butterpuffed · 17/08/2020 16:44

Presumably you've had the headaches for a while due to lack of fluid intake so what has happened to make you question it now ?

speakout · 17/08/2020 16:47

you can't bring yourself to drink water

What happens if you try? Do you vomit? is it a phobia?
