i literally don't drink plain water. i drink a can of coke zero with my lunch and another with my dinner, i try to drink green tea with my breakfast but.. this almost never happens and i give in and have an iced coffee/milk tea (cold, milky tea), it's really bad, i get headaches but i can't bring myself to drink water. Interest article about Tim Spector in the Times today : ‘ Is everything you thought about dieting wrong?‘ in which he says,
‘Myth: We need to drink eight glasses of water a day
: A study that looked at the intakes of the elderly found no benefit for kidney function or life expectancy.‘

hI I do not drink a lot of water either, mostly coffee than tea in the evening I do drink about one bottle of sparkling water each day at night I find it is harder in winter when it is cold. Is the sparkling water bad for me?
@Bwlch what do they drink instead of water? Caffeine, alcohol and sugar are all dehydrating.

Honestly I chug water, I'd feel thirsty all day without it
Caffeine isn't dehydrating - it's a myth.

It's a diuretic but that's not the same thing. If you're thirsty and have can of coke instead of the equivalent amount of water, you won't be any less hydrated afterwards.

www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/caffeinated-drinks/faq-20057965

Alcohol is a dehydrating but it's a myth that a normal amount of caffeine is. The amount of water you add to tea and coffee to make it drinkable means it doesn't dehydrate you.

Bwlch · 18/08/2020 13:26

Tea and coffee... nearly 100% water. My husband also drinks beer which is 95% water. They obviously aren't dehydrating to any significant degree otherwise they would have related health issues. They don't.

Sonders · 18/08/2020 13:32

OP you are getting a crazy amount of hate for something that really isn't that bad, especially because it doesn't affect anyone but you.

I used to hate the taste of water, but I was also raised on fizzy drinks. I have a super vivid memory of my french teacher being aghast when I said I drank Fanta for breakfast...

It could just be that your tastebuds are used to extremely sweet liquids, anything at the other end of the spectrum tastes 'wrong'.

Like others have suggested, it sounds like you need to try and ween yourself off (or seriously reduce) the amount of sweetness in your beverages, which will then help you to drink more :)

polkadotpixie · 18/08/2020 13:56

I'm terrible for drinking enough, I normally only have about 3 drinks a day and like you it all used to be Diet Coke

I gave up the Diet Coke and moved onto flavoured sparkling water first of all and then onto mainly squash

I still don't drink enough but at least it's not pop now and I get way less migraines and headaches

All of the people who don't drink a lot of water, I'm curious if you have dehydrated skin or spots? I've always found lots of water correlates to clear skin but obviously that's not a science!

I can't remember the last time I drank plain water. I have no issues with spots or bad skin.

I drink Pepsi, fruit juice, coffee and green tea.

No, my skin is great. I rarely drink plain water.

MrDarcysMa · 18/08/2020 17:41

I've studied nutrition and this is very dangerous. Poor hydration is the cause of SO many issues with your body and leads to inflammation, poor brain function, and prevents nutrients travelling around your body and being absorbed as they should be.

Some things might help - drinking through a stainless steel straw, a soda stream, a bottle with measurements on it, flavouring with fresh fruit, or if you must - squash.

In the mean time you should be eating lots of hydrating foods such as veg and cucumber, melon, etc.
Dried cereals and bread products can be very drying so won't help.

But you don't need to drink water to be hydrated, that's the point. If you drink enough fluid, you'll be fine. Tea, coffee, squash, cordial and soft drinks are mostly water, just with various additives and flavourings in them.

Clive222 · 18/08/2020 18:12

It doesn’t matter if you don’t drink water. Tea and squash are more hydrating anyway. The current faddy idea that everyone has to drink water is just an invention of big advertising. Water is ok if you don’t have anything else, but it’s not better than other drinks. Drink what ever you want, just don’t get dehydrated

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/08/2020 18:17

Well yeah, but some like OP have about half a liter of liquid a day. 2 cans and occasional cup of tea really isn't healthy.

I have never suffered from spots (even as a teen), and my skin is not dehydrated at all.

I know that, I was referring to the PP's that insist you need to drink 2 litres of plain water to be hydrated - it's just not the case.

Tea, coffee, squash and cordial are all 95% water and will hydrate you just fine. Foods like cucumber, oranges, watermelon, soups and ice lollies also contain plenty of liquid. If I drank 2 litres of plain water a day I would be on the toilet every thirty minutes Grin

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 18/08/2020 18:33

Lots of people don’t drink water as a drink. But they do drink more tea or squash so they’re getting plenty of water. Coke probably isn’t the best choice but you know that already.

Tap water isn’t very nice here but if I add ice or put it in the fridge for a while, then I find it very easy to drink. I used to drink a couple of bottles of Evian each day but I’ve stopped that due to the plastic waste.

My partner drinks tea, squash and coke. He rarely drinks water and I don’t think he’s ever had a spot. I’ve always drank water as well as tea and squash and I’ve always had spot prone skin although I can keep my skin clear if I look after it well.

Bwlch · 18/08/2020 18:40

Red meat is about 70% water.

Without knowing the full details of the OP's diet, what she eats as well as drinks, it is impossible to tell whether or not she is consuming enough water to maintain her health.

I really can’t get my head around the reasoning of all the posters complaining that water is ‘boring’ Confused

so what?! brushing your teeth is boring. sleeping is boring. taking medication is boring. you still need to do it all to be healthy. complaining that it’s boring is so childish

ladybird69 · 19/08/2020 03:02

Different areas have different tasting tap water. If I didn’t like it then I would boil it and then let it cool, it tasted better then. I also love cucumber infused water it’s really refreshing in this weather.

PurpleDaisies · 19/08/2020 06:29

@whiplashy you don’t have to drink just plain water to start healthy.

lljkk · 19/08/2020 06:55

Our courgette plants are doing great this summer. I mention that because one evening I had 1.5 large courgettes for tea (with other veg & some other things). omg, I wee'd & wee'd & wee'd. Courgettes are mostly water indeed!!

You don't need to drink plain water to be healthy, that's the entire point Hmm

Squash, tea, coffee, fruit juice, soft drinks and herbal teas will all hydrate you just as well as water, it's just they have other properties too which may not be great in large doses.

This whole "you must drink plain water everyday to function" thing is a myth - no doubt one spread about by bottled water companies!

Mintjulia · 19/08/2020 07:17

Try hot water with a slice of lemon in, or weak lemon barley water.

I’d avoid Coke Zero like the plague. There is nothing good about it.

Have there been many say it's boring? Most I've seen have said they don't like it?
