'chester freezer'

I'm not defending chester draws, but at least I can understand how it happened.

I've just seen someone talk about their 'chester freezer' on Facebook. There's no excuse.

@hamstersarse - Hear Hear.

GoodbyeToCare · 15/08/2020 17:59

Sheik of Fara anyone?

Che Guevara in case you're wondering Grin

Trufflepuffpuff · 15/08/2020 17:59

Haha @ChanklyBore snap! I did exactly the same thing after seeing that thread and was going to contribute that, but you got there first Grin

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/08/2020 18:02

I'm in Bristol. We like chester drawls.

mnahmnah · 15/08/2020 18:02

@midlifecrash

I’m guessing Oliphant

clarehhh · 15/08/2020 18:02

Agree but those people spell it draws not drawers!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/08/2020 18:03

No, apparently they had a Beyonce aid.

I hear that Beyonce enjoys playing on bansi castles in her spare time Grin

Sevo7 · 15/08/2020 18:03

Someone wrote “saylavee” on at the end of very deep and meaningful Facebook post yesterday. It’s took me ages to work out they meant c’est la vie!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/08/2020 18:04

I think I had one of those from the chip shop the other day.

pointythings · 15/08/2020 18:05

These are all hilarious. They really are, but they do worry me. I'm foreign and I can spell all of these properly. My kids can too. Is this bad teaching or just downright don't give a fuckery?

midlifecrash · 15/08/2020 18:08

Thank you mnahmnah. But is Oliphant so common you would never have to spell it? I was thinking it must be something like Fox. Assuming someone would tell you to think of an elephant when they were referring to a fox, which is another matter.

turbonerd · 15/08/2020 18:09

Haha, I thought the same about the Wallah quite Grin

mnahmnah · 15/08/2020 18:09

@pointythings

It’s not bad teaching. I spend a ridiculous amount of time correcting ‘of’ to ‘have’ and ‘are’ to ‘our’. Repeatedly. These are teenagers who will have had teachers correcting it for years.

I think a lot of it is because people don't see things written down, or just don't read a lot, so are spelling them how they sound. Add local accents into the mix and things get interesting.

I guess its the reverse of that thing about not laughing at people who mispronounce words because it means they've learnt (learned?) Them by reading. Or something.

Incidentally the people I know who make the most spelling mistakes, carnt, farther not father, rest bite etc are the ones who like to boast they haven't read a book since they were at school. Make of that what you will!

tobee · 15/08/2020 18:10

@MrsKoala

Persay is one I see quite often and it’s usually in the wrong context too - so doubly wrong.

Hold down the fort is one I also hate. But for me the worst thing like this is the use of the correctly spelled ‘mortified’ but in the totally wrong context. Usually to be angry about something not remotely embarrassing.

But "hold down the fort" is right?

Lots of things will continue to go and uncorrected an accepted as more and more people rely on autocorrect and write mostly in text and informally. Some of it is ok to an extent of communication has happened, but there has to be a line somewhere.

mnahmnah · 15/08/2020 18:10

@midlifecrash

I may be wrong! But I have known a few in my life

Nannewnannew · 15/08/2020 18:10

I got called an arse a few days ago on another thread about elderly drivers. I had questioned why people kept using breaking instead of braking and was told that it wasn’t important on such a serious post about road safety! 🤷🏼‍♀️

wonkylegs · 15/08/2020 18:10

I get clients asking for on sweets and dinning rooms all the time - usually I think it's a oversight until they make the same mistake over and over again.
One client kept correcting my spelling of those two rooms 😳, but to be fair he thought he could do all of my job better than me - I'm not sure why he had bothered employing a professional as he knew everything. We may have parted ways.

tobee · 15/08/2020 18:12

My post had lots of typos sorry

pointythings · 15/08/2020 18:14

mnahmnah and porpentine so it's all about the incredible importance of reading then. I'm not actually all that surprised. Though nobody has ever bragged to me about never having read a book in their life, possibly because they know what kind of face they'd get in response.

Blackcountryexile · 15/08/2020 18:15

Complaint about recycling centre not taking inert waist !

tobee · 15/08/2020 18:15

Anyway had to double check "hold down the fort"

To think that chester draws isn't as bad as
turbonerd · 15/08/2020 18:16

Hahaha, quote! And also, the thread had moved on a bit Grin
Pacifically and would of drives me nuts

Mochudhu · 15/08/2020 18:16

It's such a palava.

mnahmnah · 15/08/2020 18:17

@pointythings

Precisely. Reading books is the best thing a child can do And an adult! Vocabulary. Comprehension skills.
