Never known anyone to keep leftover takeaway for the next day until DP - always thought it was a one night treat. Think it's a bit odd - is it?

What a waste! My ds regularly has leftover pizza for breakfast.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/08/2020 22:01

I always make our weeks rice on a Sunday, once cooked I pop it in the fridge and it remains there until its eaten, some of it is there until Saturday. I have never in my life had food poisoning.

Totally agree with Simon - Rice keeps up to a week in the fridge - I do this regularly, too and also have never had food poisoning.

Pizzaonthebeach · 14/08/2020 22:02

Sorry to say it but I think you are weird in not loving it!

ralphi · 14/08/2020 22:07

It’s odd NOT to keep it for the next day. (Unless their is none left!)

Voice0fReason · 14/08/2020 22:08

Don't be ridiculous, of course leftover curry should be kept for the next day!!

I have also always been taught to not reheat rice!
I add a little bit of water to the rice (just a dribble) then really over heat it in the micro. Been doing it for years and still alive! Grin

Think the problem is if you don't heat it properly.

Seriously, I’m not getting all this poisoning from rice thing. I’ve left rice out for hours, cooked it in the late morning or early afternoon to get it out that way, then before going bed put it in the fridge and a reheat it the next day, heck there are even the odd times if the fridge is too full it just stays out ( not in this kind of weather though) and it gets eaten the next day with no problems at all.
@hoxtonbabe @SchadenfreudePersonified @SimonJT these folks with their lack of cooking knowledge... it’s cracking me up but also annoying me that a bunch of good food is being wasted simply because they don’t know how to cook properly. Sheesh.

alibongo5 · 14/08/2020 22:13

I wish there had been voting buttons!

Luckily for me I married a man who is not really bothered about food so I get ALL the leftovers. Which are eaten a forkful (or three) at a time every time I go to the fridge the next day. It's the only way. Reheating is cheating.

You would throw away perfectly good food that you’d paid for and you think he’s weird?

Ginkypig · 14/08/2020 22:19

The best Sunday of the month is my curry lunch!

We deliberately get 2 rotis and 2 sides of Dahl to save for the next day when we get a curry! It is my absolute favourite meal! We do have less the night before too though.

It gives the flavours a chance to develop and it thickens so it's not so watery (like lentil soup does when you have it the day after you make it!

Pinklynx · 14/08/2020 22:19

You're missing out on a treat OP it's much nicer the second or even third day.

Voice0fReason · 14/08/2020 22:21

Uncooked rice often contains the bacteria Bacillus cereus. These bacteria can form protective spores that survive the cooking process.

If the rice isn't cooled quickly then the bacteria spores can germinate, grow and produce a toxin (poison) that causes vomiting. This toxin is not killed by reheating.

Obviously there are plenty of times when you will get away with it, I used to reheat rice all the time, but it only takes one time for you to get really very ill from it. It could be deadly for some people. I wouldn't risk it now I know better.

Cool the rice down quickly under cold water or spread out on a tray, then put it straight in the fridge. Reheat it so it is steaming when you want to use it.

I think I’m the odd one out here...I throw out leftover takeaway curry. If I made it myself, I’d keep it - in fact, I always batch cook - but you don’t know what has happened to the takeaway curry before you get it. It’s not likely that it would do any harm, but it’s not worth it in my opinion. I can’t be sure how fresh it is, I’m trusting the takeaway to have stored everything well and be using fresh ingredients. OTT possibly, but I don’t care!

alibongo5 · 14/08/2020 22:26

Meh if I can't trust the enough to eat leftovers, I shouldn't be buying from them to eat the first time either in my view.

MoggyMittens23 · 14/08/2020 22:28

Food waste is gross - YABU

If you’re worried about what’s happened to it, why would you eat it at all?
Drivingdownthe101 · 14/08/2020 22:36

@roundtwotooto

We are absolutely not a leftovers house
So you throw away good food? Or you just eat it all and don’t have any leftovers?
amusedbush · 14/08/2020 22:38

I can never finish a takeaway so I always save it for the next day - Indian, Chinese, pizza. I do have to hide it in the fridge though as DH is a dustbin and could happily polish off my food after eating all of his own!

ultrablue · 14/08/2020 22:41

Oooh cold curry, Chinese or pizza the next day for breakfast, you can't beat it

PurpleSproutingSomething · 14/08/2020 22:42

@ludothedog

I always buy extra to have the next day Blush
All the years of eating curry and I have never once thought to do this! Brilliant.
minnieok · 14/08/2020 22:45

Of course it's normal, I buy extra deliberately!

FenellaVelour · 14/08/2020 22:45

Oh absolutely curry is best the next day. I have a small appetite so can never eat a whole portion, so i always save some for the next day. Yum.

YinuCeatleAyru · 14/08/2020 22:47

for a splendid brunch, put a couple of spoons of last night's curry into a ramekin, then crack in an egg and bake till the white is set but the yolk is still a bit runny. serve with wholemeal toast or leftover naan toasted.

Hairthrowaway · 14/08/2020 22:48

Some people save leftovers and others bin them in disgust.

Personal preference really. As long as it’s safe to eat i don’t see the issue.
