AIBU or is saving curry a bit weird

Never known anyone to keep leftover takeaway for the next day until DP - always thought it was a one night treat. Think it's a bit odd - is it?

It’s fine to reheat rice. The problem is if it’s been left out at room temperature for a while it begins to produce toxins which can’t be killed by reheating and can cause food poisoning. However DH seems immune to this as he often goes for cold leftovers for breakfast when he’s hungover.

Any curry, Any time. Wonderful stuff!

@LittleBearPad

Tbf curry will be better the next day. There’s a yummy Nigella one and she suggests making it the day before and reheating
Could you link to the recipe, please?
Mothership4two · 14/08/2020 21:43

What’s wrong with reheating the rice?

Can cause food poisoning.

Slippy78 · 14/08/2020 21:44

This has to be the most definitive 100% YABVVVU I've ever seen here Smile

Mothership4two · 14/08/2020 21:45

According to NHS:-

Ideally, serve rice as soon as it has been cooked.

If that is not possible, cool the rice as quickly as possible (ideally within 1 hour).

Keep rice in the fridge for no more than 1 day until reheating.

When you reheat rice, always check that it's steaming hot all the way through.

Do not reheat rice more than once.

Mothership4two · 14/08/2020 21:46

Any leftovers in this house are kept for next day

Pachelbelle · 14/08/2020 21:49

This is probably the most shocking thing I've come across on mumsnet - of course you should save curry! Don't tell me you throw it away? We always order plenty so there's some for lunch and dinner the next day. Occasionally some goes in the freezer but NEVER in the bin in a million years.

I’m Asian, thats important in the rice stakes!

I always make our weeks rice on a Sunday, once cooked I pop it in the fridge and it remains there until its eaten, some of it is there until Saturday. I have never in my life had food poisoning.

Also, I always make too much curry (never ever get take away curry as its so greasy) so I don’t have to bother making lunch the next day.

JingsMahBucket · 14/08/2020 21:51

Seriously folks, it’s fine to reheat rice. A majority of the world and the world’s population reheats rice every day just fine. You think all those folks in India, East Asia, Africa and Latin America along with their diasporas are worrying about this? No. Get a grip.

BurtsBeesKnees · 14/08/2020 21:52

Curry, Chinese, pizza, all good for the next day

Wilsonscaresme · 14/08/2020 21:52

The risk is the cooling of the rice, not the reheating.

Sipperskipper · 14/08/2020 21:52

DH always has the leftovers for lunch the next day. If not, we freeze it for an emergency curry!

Ninkanink · 14/08/2020 21:53

It’s not weird at all.

I save leftovers from all takeaways. Don’t like wasting food or money.

JingsMahBucket · 14/08/2020 21:53

@SimonJT these people are hilarious. Several billion people around the world reheating their rice just fine over the course of a week and certain British people are freaking out claiming food poisoning. 😂😂😂

RiftGibbon · 14/08/2020 21:53

If we have leftovers they get frozen and used another time. Really nice second time around!

hoxtonbabe · 14/08/2020 21:54

This rice thing has got me scratching my head, leftover rice is normal in most African and Caribbean homes, we bung it in the fridge and reheat the next day.. I nor my family or anyone I know has ever suffered with food poisoning from rice.

Rice is a 5 or 6 days out of 7, staple in my house, from the moment my sisters and I could eat solids as babies that is what we are fed.. along with scotch bonnet chillis, lol ( not raw, but in the stews we make)

TheSoapyFrog · 14/08/2020 21:54

I've never heard of anyone who didn't!

roundtwotooto · 14/08/2020 21:55

We are absolutely not a leftovers house

WitchenKitch · 14/08/2020 21:55

If youve never had leftover curry in a toasted sandwich you haven't lived. Weird and proud.

Shamp · 14/08/2020 21:55

I always keep it, tastes better the next day and weird and wasteful to throwaway perfectly good food.

Bodgedboxdye · 14/08/2020 21:58

Oh my god, no.

I used to get a chicken tikka masala on a Friday, not eat it all and then eat the rest the next day (warmed up) it tasted amazing, so much nicer.

(:

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/08/2020 21:59

Leftover curry makes an amazing breakfast!

What do you do with your leftovers? (If you don't have any that is understandable. If you throw them out, you need your head examined!)

hoxtonbabe · 14/08/2020 21:59

@JingsMahBucket @SimonJT

Seriously, I’m not getting all this poisoning from rice thing. I’ve left rice out for hours, cooked it in the late morning or early afternoon to get it out that way, then before going bed put it in the fridge and a reheat it the next day, heck there are even the odd times if the fridge is too full it just stays out ( not in this kind of weather though) and it gets eaten the next day with no problems at all.
