To think if you chose to go abroad during a pandemic it serves you right?

I get that folk feel they deserve a holiday, but if you travel during the current pandemic you shouldn't complain if rules suddenly change before you get home.

Anyone with half a wit could see that it was a risky thing to do to take a holiday at this time.

Agree OP.

DENMAN03 · 14/08/2020 16:32

I wouldn't say it serves you right. I have had two fab trips to France in the last month. I got lucky with the timing but even if they were cut short or I had to quarantine it wouldn't have spolit the immense pleasure i got from my holiday. Don't be bitter.

Aridane · 14/08/2020 17:46

@DoreensEatingHerSoreen

Have a fantastic break

ilovesooty · 14/08/2020 18:01

I contacted my insurers to discover that my original reading of my policy was correct. It didn't cover me for flight disruption due to FCO advice regardless of when it was booked.
Having thought about the situation today I'm going to move the flight to an alternative date and location (one with winter dates available) well into next year and pay any fees rather than lose all the money. Things may be different in six to eight months ' time. I shall ensure that I book a hotel with flexible cancellation.

In the meantime I'll take the time off I'd planned and book a break in the UK for part of it. There's no point in not having a rest from work when I'd planned one and no point in making myself miserable over it.

It's been an interesting thread in that there are one or two posters whose smug snide comments put them firmly in a category not easily forgotten. Other people have shown themselves to be practical and kind. Much like real life really.

I will be glad when this summer is over. Too much division.

At least in the autumn we will all get past the holiday or not to holiday stress, and be focus on getting the children back to school and hoping that a second wave is not too bad.

wigornian · 15/08/2020 13:56

I agree! We had a 6 week inter rail holidays planned with DC, been looking forward tll ok it for years and was to mark end of primary school years. We have deferred to next year, gutting, but the responsible thing to do for ourselves and others!

Aridane · 16/08/2020 04:43

Slightly off topic, but I’m staggered by the staycation era - I would not dare to squash myself in crowded pubs and beaches

Aridane · 16/08/2020 04:43

(don’t know where “era” came from)

MsTSwift · 16/08/2020 05:56

Having an amazing time thanks op!. “Serves me right” 😄 . We were also planning to interarrail so adapted trip and drove Instead. We stayed flexible and visiting the two countries with lower rates that England. Southern Germany is breathtaking. R rate 0.5. Just off for a lake swim. Enjoy your day op x

Oblomov20 · 16/08/2020 06:17

Who is complaining? I know a number of families who have travelled. And come home.

Aridane · 16/08/2020 07:13

@Oblomov20 - I think the OP has been reading too many Daily Mail ‘sad face’ stories and frothing in response Wink

Porcupineinwaiting · 16/08/2020 12:16

@Aridane plenty of uncrowded, beautiful beaches in Wales and Northumberland. Were not all trying to cram ourselves onto 4 square inches of sand on the south coast.

To think if you chose to go abroad during a pandemic it serves you right?
Friendsoftheearth · 16/08/2020 13:59

I am not sure why we have spent the last few decades trekking around Europe which was so bloody expensive and unbearably hot, and thanks to covid we have just discovered that we have the most incredible beaches here in Cornwall, the weather has been beautiful - white sand beaches and azure waters were far better than any we have seen in France or Italy!

Our villa was a fraction of the cost, and a few hours drive in the car with the dogs. Perfect! No wonder the beaches in Cornwall are on the world class list! We even saw whales and seals in the sea! So no complaints from us, we will definitely be booking again next year, who knew it was all here on the doorstep, so the covid changes has its upsides!

Friendsoftheearth · 16/08/2020 14:01

Kynance cove was spectacular

ZiggeryZaggy · 16/08/2020 14:18

I’m having a fabulous time in Turkey. I came here to get away from how hectic Cornwall is at the moment , and am finding it far easier to social distance 😄

I am also happy for everyone enjoying Cornwall, why not? It is great to see people enjoying themselves, after a miserable few months.

ZiggeryZaggy · 16/08/2020 14:23

The town I grew up in, in Cornwall, is the busiest I’ve ever seen it in August. It is good to see so many families though, as opposed to groups of people who used to come just to drink.

Porcupineinwaiting · 16/08/2020 14:33

@Friendsoftheearth Kynance Cove is (imo) one of the best beaches in Europe. In answer to your question though, the answer is: the weather.

Plenty of the uk is lovely in warm sunny weather but a bit grim in cold, grey drizzle (she says looking out of the window). We holiday here about 50% of the time but it's always a gamble.

MrsandMrsonedaysoon · 16/08/2020 14:42

Our original holiday had been booked and fully paid for last year before we had any incling to what was going to unfold this year it was supposed to have been our last big holiday before starting IVF in December (same sex relationship) our original dates had been cancelled due to the pandemic we naively rebooked it to the end of August. I had worked my arse off through the pandemic and honestly was really looking forward to getting on a plane and going to nice hot country and getting away. A few weeks ago we tried to rebook it for next year but they wanted £700 to change it we can’t afford to do that with saving I top of ivf but not willing to lose the money either. We have two weeks untill we go and there’s talk off Greece being on of the next country to lose the air corridor. Now Spain and France are off the cards everyone is looking at turkey and Greece. It’s honestly all a mess. I would have been my first week off in months and was honestly looking forward to going I’m absolutely exhausted and just wanted my get away and I’m not even pregnant yet 😢.

Friendsoftheearth · 16/08/2020 15:38

The weather has been gorgeous. We have been twice por and both occasions wall to wall sunshine and baking hot in Cornwall, admittedly this is not the case every summer, but we have been overseas and had a wash out of a holiday. Nothing is guaranteed. The worst one was Abu Dhabi sand storm and freezing 6 out of 7 days, and France! Rained solidly for five days. Last day of the holiday we saw watery sunlight as we packed our cases. I do know what you are saying, but climate change seems to be a silver lining as far as the UK tourist board is concerned!

Aridane · 16/08/2020 16:18

That’s beautiful,, @Porcupine

MsTSwift · 16/08/2020 19:22

I went to Devon for a few days this summer miserable sitting on a grey beach in a winter jumper as wind whips at your face. No thanks.

Friendsoftheearth · 17/08/2020 06:32

When was that swift in February? We have had an amazing summer thanks.

MsTSwift · 17/08/2020 18:42

July 🙄 north Devon. Brrrr. Southern Europe gets my vote every single time...

Aridane · 17/08/2020 18:44

Oh yes - that 4th July post lockdown weekend was fucking freezing

cantdothisnow1 · 18/08/2020 09:16

We have been motorhoming in France for the last few weeks, with our own facilities and have stayed rural. We travelled on the tunnel so no interactions at airport / ferry. We have been on empty beaches and had more space than we could possibly have at home to maintain social distance etc.

Yes airbridges can be removed but what people are, rightly, annoyed about is the way in which the government is announcing these Quarantines.

30 hours notice given at 11pm at night actually puts people at risk as there were then convoys of drivers attempting to beat the Q14. If there is a 'cut off' after which Q14 will be announced then the Government should be clear on what it is to enable people already abroad to plan sufficiently. They should also be clear on WHEN in the day the announcement will be made.

We were due back the Saturday lunchtime after Q14 was implemented so 6 hours later. From 4am we did not leave motorhome and didn't mingle. It is entirely unclear whether we are covered by the Transit rules, if we were driving from Germany we would not need to Q14. As we did not leave our vehicle from the point that the air bridge was lifted I cannot see why we are subject to the Q14. No one knows so we are subject to the Quarantine.

We have 2 autistic children who need space, that space cannot be provided in holiday destinations in the UK as we are an overcrowded island. My eldest has suicidal tendancies, lockdown has been HARD. I am not selfish for wanting to ensure his mental health by holidaying somewhere rural away from crowds.
