To think if you chose to go abroad during a pandemic it serves you right?

I get that folk feel they deserve a holiday, but if you travel during the current pandemic you shouldn't complain if rules suddenly change before you get home.

Anyone with half a wit could see that it was a risky thing to do to take a holiday at this time.

It depends really. My husband is from the US and he hasn’t seen his parents in over a year. We have a 2.5 year old. His parents were supposed to visit in July and rescheduled to October which they’ve now cancelled because there isn’t a hope that they’re going to be allowed into Ireland without quarantining. Today the covid committee said Ireland won’t get a vaccine until next June at the earliest. By then he won’t have seen them in person for two years. I feel like they’re missing out on this time to get to know their grandchild. Yeah we video call but she doesn’t really pay attention because she just wants to press button on our phones. For some of us it’s not just a matter of missing out on a week in Spain it’s years of not seeing our loved ones. Although the choice we have made is to wait until it’s safer I’m not going to condemn those who make other choices.

Ds best friend has gone with her parents to Malta, they are staying with family who live there. There was no quarantine when they flew out & they are due back on Tuesday, they haven't been to any of the tourist attractions, have been staying in where the family live as they have an apartment attached to their home & their own pool.

@pandafunfactory

What a nasty, smug, tedious little thread. I bet you got a lovely thrill as you rushed to your keyboard to bash it out. How pathetic. People have spent time and money planning holidays they now can't take. Have a bit of empathy.

Personally I holiday in the uk, always have and I would have been devastated if lockdown had stopped us. People don't ask for it, it's completely unforeseen and uncontrolled times we are living in.

Except it's not unforeseen. Everyone and their dog said when the air bridges were announced it was foolish to book as the air bridges can be rescinded at any notice.
lifesalongsong · 13/08/2020 23:37

Who is complaining? Is this thread about someone specific or are you one of those people who think they are so much smarter and better than everyone else, hardly an original thread anyway, I'm sure it's been done to death in the last few weeks

rorty · 13/08/2020 23:37

i don't blame people for going but I don't think you can then complain about air bridges "collapsing".

Mintychoc1 · 13/08/2020 23:38

OP you’re just jealous because some people had lovely foreign holidays and you didn’t.

Many people are complaining. Twitter is awash with people moaning about it
MsTSwift · 13/08/2020 23:39

“Serves you right” is such a childish mealy mouthed phase. I have a picture in my mind of what this op is like. She would be one of those dreadful snitchy little self righteous kids at school.

mangocoveredlamb · 13/08/2020 23:39

Well I’ll be quarantining from Tuesday, I came to a (remote, secluded) family property knowing full well I might have to quarantine on my return. I’m very lucky to be able to stay here, and for us the “risk” of quarantine (now realised) was completely worth it (and what we were expecting) to get away for a little while, inspect the property and give my DH a break from wfh.
I’m irritated with the assumption that everyone is surprised or a wild risk taker.

rorty · 13/08/2020 23:39

We would normally be in France now & could in theory self isolate. But it's stricter than lockdown isn't it & with 3 young dc can't face it so stayed home.

ilovesooty · 13/08/2020 23:39

O should have been travelling on the 24th until the announcement this evening.
I booked my flight last year, before Covid-19 was an issue. It hasn't been cancelled so I stand to lose the money I've paid. I could have quarantined but travelling against FCO advice and invalidating my insurance seems foolhardy.

I fail to see how I've got what I deserved.

rorty · 13/08/2020 23:41

@ilovesooty I assumed if you booked before Covid the travel insurance covered you in most cases when the FCO advises against. That is annoying.

whereistherum · 13/08/2020 23:41

I am using a friend of a friend to figure out where the next ban is coming from, they were due to go to Portugal, changed it to Spain, the next day that got put on the list, then they choose Malta.

It takes less time for them to change the booking then trying to get the money back out of the airlines.

Lucindainthesky · 13/08/2020 23:41

Yanbu. I think it's absolutely idiotic to go abroad atm. If people really cannot go one year without a foreign holiday then I've got zero sympathy when it goes wrong

I assume you have travel insurance? If so claim for the flight costs

Simple

Justajot · 13/08/2020 23:45

There will be loads of people who booked holidays before covid was a known thing. Some of them won't have been able to cancel and get a refund because they were travelling to places like France, with an air bridge, and everything was going ahead so were not eligible for a refund. They may be abroad now and facing 2 weeks of quarantine and no work and no pay on their return.

Are those circumstances so hard to imagine?

It doesn't, unfortunately.

They would have known about COVID before traveling though and decided to take the risk and still travel knowing the air bridge may be stopped

Anyone who booked before COVID and due to travel after Saturday to France will be able to claim on insurance.

ilovesooty · 13/08/2020 23:49

@dwiz8 it isn't simple I'm afraid. The flight is still operating whether or not I choose to get on it and I've been told that under those circumstances I can't make a claim.

And can you say the same thing for all the people they'll be sharing a plane with for several hours on the way home?
BigChocFrenzy · 13/08/2020 23:50

We all take risks with something, whether it's going on holiday, buying a new car or whatever

It's nasty to gloat and be smug when things go wrong for other people

rorty · 13/08/2020 23:50

@ilovesooty we couldn't go on our May holiday but insurance would have let us claim (booked ly) however we just moved it to next yr.

wishfulthinking101 · 13/08/2020 23:51

'Serves you right' is dangerous territory... bit childish imo...

rorty · 13/08/2020 23:51

fingers x they will cancel the flight. Who's it with?
