To think anyone TTC now is mad?

Given the GDP fall-economy disaster, rising unemployment, coronavirus, does it seem bloody mad to be TTC now?

I’ve got mates and family who are TTC or already upduffed and it seems absolutely mad to me. Why does RIGHT NOW feel like a good time to TTC? AIBU?

(Nc for this!)

Can’t speak for everyone else but if I don’t do it now I’ll be too old. I’m in a secure job so financially stable, my parents are both still around and now actually seems like as good as it’s going to get!

altiara · 13/08/2020 21:15

Some people are in a good place with their jobs, houses, savings and running out of time to be parents. Why shouldn’t people choose if it’s a good time for them to TTC?

WilheldivaHater · 13/08/2020 21:16

Dh and I are still ttc, we know that now is not a good time but it took 5 years for us to have DS and even with all the uncertainty I'm not prepared to wait until everything is better before I start.

Zilla1 · 13/08/2020 21:17

Plenty of people have careers that are insulated from COVID. Of the rest, some may realise there's never an ideal time. Delaying can cause problems wrt infertility in terms of reducing with age, later diagnosis and a shorter window to mitigate . I expect many of those who have infertility issues wish they'd started TTC years before.

Shefliesonherownwings · 13/08/2020 21:23

I am currently pregnant, DH and I began trying in January and we would have continued to try still if it hadn't already happened.

This is probably taking the thread to a darker place but we lost our daughter to stillbirth last year and basically getting pregnant again was all I could think about. We're also getting on a bit now so regardless of the economy and pandemic it isn't 'bloody mad' to us and we'd have kept going regardless. There's plenty of reasons why people want to be pregnant or trying now, don't be so judgemental.

MsEllany · 13/08/2020 21:24

Maybe they’re reaching a time in their lives where they don’t feel they can wait any longer?

northstars · 13/08/2020 21:24

Everyone’s situation is different.

Zilla1 · 13/08/2020 21:26

Sorry for your loss, sheflies. Life can be hard sometimes.

flowerrful · 13/08/2020 21:26

Climate change is the big one.

IdblowJonSnow · 13/08/2020 21:27

Granted now is a crazy time but children are always going to be born regardless of war, recessions, pandemics etc.
It will be interesting in a few years to see how the birth rate has been impacted in 2020/2021.

CoffeeRunner · 13/08/2020 21:27

Maybe they want something happy & positive to look forward to at this time in their lives?

Children are far more than a financial burden you know.

gypsywater · 13/08/2020 21:28

Do you have a child already, OP?

India999 · 13/08/2020 21:28

I'm TTC because it took me 2.5 years to conceive my first child. I'm scared I have fertility issues and being pregnant and having that baby is more important than the money. Is that mad? Sorry!

dwiz8 · 13/08/2020 21:29

Yabu

Not everyone will be impacted by the negative shit going on with the economy

MinesAPintOfTea · 13/08/2020 21:30

I had DS during the last recession. The first two years of his life were lean financially, but I was stuck without a job anyway. Better to have the baby when I was going to be at home than to have two career breaks.

Children are only expensive when going out to work (childcare) or when they're getting close to about 10 upwards. Hopefully things will have improved by then.

Not having a baby now personally, and would worry about impacts of covid during pregnancy, but lockdowns and recessions are not bad times to have (or make) babies

Bells3032 · 13/08/2020 21:31

Lots of people have reasons to do so. Jobs which should ride covid OK and have savings. Plus ttc can take forever esp if there are issues. We have no idea if covid will last 6 months or 6 years. Make sure you take precautions and wash hands and wear masks.

Plus there are some benefits to it esp if you're working from home during the early days of morning sickness etc.

bee222 · 13/08/2020 21:31

I’m currently pregnant.
If I leave it any later I’ll be too old.
My job is secure, I have savings and I own my house with no mortgage.

It’s also none of your business.

Trufflepuffpuff · 13/08/2020 21:31

I know it's my own fault for clicking but I'm currently pregnant with my first - we found out just before this all kicked off and we couldn't have imagined how bad it would get. As someone who's felt anxious about whether we're making the right decision (but it's the right time for us), this is quite upsetting to read. As a PP said, perhaps try to be less judgemental and more sensitive OP. There are plenty of reasons people are TTC or currently pregnant.

Pinkstars2501 · 13/08/2020 21:31

Because we're already 3 years down the line ttc with no success, including a failed IVF cycle and we're 33 so don't want to leave it longer.

Hope that's ok with you.

nicenames · 13/08/2020 21:37

Ha! Well, I am in quite a secure job, but if they make redundancies I am probably more protected for being pregnant in my particular industry and field. And it is much easier to manage morning sickness when WFH.

RoseTintedAtuin · 13/08/2020 21:39

There’s no good time, you’ll always find reasons not to but usually one very good reason to try

GotOutOfBedOnTheWrongSide · 13/08/2020 21:40

I assume you've already got your little family OP?

ComeOnBridgett · 13/08/2020 21:41

Sorry to hear that @Shefliesonherownwings Sad

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 13/08/2020 21:43

If you’re facing a time without work seems like the ideal time to take off to have a baby tbh. Restart the career when things recover. So long as your partner has solid job.

EL8888 · 13/08/2020 21:45

@Pinkstars2501 exactly, we have been trying for over 2 years, had fertility and IVF but still nothing. No diagnosis either. It must be nice to just think people TTC and then just do Confused

Both of our jobs are very secure. COVID has made them even more secure
