to be really bothered by a thread title, to complain about it & not be satisfied with the response?

Maybe gross blasphemy is acceptable in the UK these days. Maybe I'm too sensitive. Tell me what you think:

Regarding a certain thread title "oh my f*cking god". I complained about it to MN, saying it was unacceptable, especially as a thread title, where you can't avoid it. I asked that it be deleted. I'm not easily offended but this was beyond the pale for me. Here's the response I got from MN:

Hi there
Many thanks for bringing this to our attention.
We agree that this comment was in poor taste but we don't tend to delete on
those grounds because it would be really hard to know where to draw the line

  • what one person thinks is funny can be another person's sensitive spot and the truth is we don't think we should be the arbiters of what people should fine offensive and what they shouldn't. On the whole we think it's better to let the boards self police in these instances, as it's very rare that a tasteless comment is left unchallenged. Certainly in this case, it wasn't and the OP has apologised. Best wishes

I'm not satisfied that in this case it would be "really hard to know where to draw the line".

Yes Meow - for some, being offended is a full time job.

bumperlicious · 03/10/2007 14:24

my full time job is Being Indignant.

seeker · 03/10/2007 14:34

I've just accepted the post of being Completely Outraged

HonoriaGlossop · 03/10/2007 14:35

lovecat

seeker · 03/10/2007 14:36

My ds thought it was a last name too - Jesus Christ and his parents, Mary and Joseph Christ.

ChubbyScotsBurd · 03/10/2007 14:37

YABU - MN's response was spot-on, they justified their decision and personally I agree that self-policing is perfectly adequate in a large community like this one.

ChubbyScotsBurd · 03/10/2007 14:40

Note to self: learn to read whole threads before posting to avoid reiterating what the entire world and their dog has already said.

coffincarrier · 03/10/2007 14:41

I quite like Getting on My High Horse. it's good exercise. and I hardly ever have to get off again.

OrmIrian · 03/10/2007 14:43

Can I claim the honour of being Disgusted please.

UnquietDad · 03/10/2007 14:45

Only if you are from Tunbridge Wells.

What does the H in Jesus H Christ stand for?

MrsSpoon · 03/10/2007 14:46

I voted with my feet the day I saw that one in active convos.

OrmIrian · 03/10/2007 14:46

Now I am offended! Are you saying that only those from Tunbridge can be disgusted? Outrageous discrimination!

FrannyandZombie · 03/10/2007 17:26

HC I am not sure about your new name

it doesn't look like you so I skim over your posts when I am speed reading a thread

and I might miss something you said and it might be funny

can't it incorporate harpsichords somehow? I am sure half of us are not clever enough to know who you are

scarymoppins · 03/10/2007 21:27

There is no such thing as blasphemy, There is no such thing as offence. Not really. You have a very priveliged life if you can afford to moan about either. Some people in the world are starving. Get over it

WideWebWitch · 03/10/2007 21:33

Oh fantastic, this brought Enid back! Hello Enid!

and Yes, YABU imo.

WideWebWitch · 03/10/2007 21:34

This seems the thread on which to post that I was in a bookshop yesterday and was intereted to see The Bible displayed under 'fiction'

foofi · 03/10/2007 21:35

Haven't read the whole thread yet, just the OP. I found it offensive too, so I'll say No, YANBU.

EmsMum · 03/10/2007 21:43

What bothered me about the thread title - and this applies to many - is that it gave no indication at all of what the thread was about. So I open it out of curiousity and get sucked into it...

PLEASE can thread titles give some hint what they contain - unless in the Only joking section ?

xXxamyxXx · 03/10/2007 21:48

build a bridge

MorticiasMother · 03/10/2007 21:52

I didn't like it. It offended me. So I didn't open the thread and was relieved when it dropped off active convos.

Perhaps MNHQ could sort something out where you can edit the thread title? It would be useful in all sorts of situations. I often start a thread and then wish I'd taken more care with the title, but I'd have to start a new thread if I wanted to change it. The poster in question did apologise and probably would have changed it too given half the chance.

Is this possible MNHQ?

Dabbles · 03/10/2007 22:01

was it the big scarey spider threaD? cos in that case she was justified!!

xXxamyxXx · 03/10/2007 22:02

yes think it was

NappiesLaGore · 03/10/2007 22:15

oh what to say?

i think this will do it.

hunkermunker · 03/10/2007 22:21

If I say "Oh, my god" I'm talking about MY god.

Not yours.

So I don't see how it's disrespectful, really.

If I say "Jesus CHRIST!" or "Christ on a bike" or "crikey bikey" you may bite me on the bottom, of course.

Eddas · 03/10/2007 22:23

People are so easily offended. Did you complain to op first? If not why not? Most people don't realise their mistake, I know i've done it before. And have said ok i'll change it.

And, you should take these things in context. If i'd seen a spider that big i'd be saying it too

YABU, because MNHQ responded to you AFTER the title/thread had changed. What would you like them to do? change/delete EVERY thread ANYONE has a problem with? not sure there'd be much left
