To tell school they're just back from Spain

malloo · 10/08/2020 21:35

In Scotland so schools start back this week. Family with DC in DS's class got back from Spain less than a week ago so should be isolating for 14 days but.... they are sending their kids back this week.

So, should I tell the school? They could be infected and therefore put others at risk. At best it would be inconvenient having to isolate and kids staying home from school again. Or is it none of my business? Not even sure what the school can do about it.

YABU - don't tell, sure they'll be fine
YANBU - tell school, they're being irresponsible

I’d tell. Bigger things at play here.

Sally872 · 11/08/2020 08:28

@ptumbi
I think many Scottish holiday makers had been coming back into England a few days before their trip back home - as England had no requirements to quarantine, and Scotland did. hmm
The whole thing is a total shitshow

Coming back via England does not remove the need to quarantine. If you have travelled through a country on quarantine list you have to quarantine. Same as English people can't come back via Scotland to avoid quarantine either. Data is shared and random checks are carried out.

lilgreen · 11/08/2020 08:29

This attitude drives me mad. I’m school staff and to think some parents think so little of my and the children’s health is very disappointing.

DorisLessingsLesson · 11/08/2020 08:57

Do airport staff get more sick?
There have been outbreaks across flight attendants and some airport staff. The unions representing airport staff have also been in conflict with airports about safeguarding, etc. Airport staff have a different experience from the public so they have focused on trying to make safe the controlled areas they can access eg staff toilets, desks, etc. Flight attendants have also complained about lack of PPE and some whistleblowers have said airlines aren't cleaning planes as often as they are supposed to.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/08/2020 11:07

I'd report

  • and I would have totally ignored some things in lockdown like SD sunbathing, sitting on benches etc

There are teachers and kids who were shielding just a few weeks ago
They are at much higher risk than others at the school

Also, if this family bring in the virus then a bubble of hundreds, even the whole school, has to stay off
So selfish

Some of those parents maybe not able to pay their bills, or even losing their job

Sugarplumfairy65 · 11/08/2020 11:33

There will be children going back to school in September who have been shielding since mid March. Of course you should tell them!

Sugarplumfairy65 · 11/08/2020 11:34

Sorry, and shielding staff going back!

Positivevibesonlyplease · 11/08/2020 11:59

I hope you decide to tell the school. It’s the only right thing to do. Doesn’t matter whose cases are higher, it’s a rule we all have to abide by. I’m so sick and tired of people behaving as if they are invincible and spreading the blasted virus everywhere they go. It’s damned selfish and irresponsible and if you didn’t tell the school, I’m afraid you’d be equally irresponsible by not acting as a decent human being and doing your best to protect others.

The children the Op is concerned about go back tomorrow, in Scotland. I hope she does tell them - or better yet, the parents decide to keep the children off

@Sugartitties

i wouldn’t say anything. if they’ve taken precautions, mask etc then i cannot see what difference it would make. If the masks work then they work. My sister has recently tested positive, has worn a mask every time she stepped outside her front door and still got it.
Masks don't really stop people from catching covid, what they do is lessen the risk of people who have it passing it on to others.

I think the nice tan would be a bit of a giveaway and the truth would come out anyway, children talk.

Where are you? It's been stunningly hot here in the UK for over a week; plenty of opportunity to get a tan even going out in your garden.

ineedaholidaynow · 11/08/2020 13:17

They are in Scotland so may have a point!

The OP is in Scotland where it's not been as nice.

Plenty of opportunity to get a tan in Scotland in the past week. Maybe not today for some parts, but it's been plenty warm across most of it the past week with a really sunny weekend.

Yes, she's not the only one Hmm. It's not been as hot, but it's been glorious since about last Thursday even in the west, until today (the East is apparently getting showers). In fact even easier to bask in the sun because the temperatures haven't been as punishing.

Friendsoftheearth · 11/08/2020 13:24

I have an amazing tan and have not left the country, it is 33c here again!

ilovesooty · 11/08/2020 13:26

@Emeraldshamrock

My neighbour & family arrived back from Spain Thursday I met her food shopping on Saturday with no mask, her and the family.
I bet she wore a mask on the flight and in Spain.

Well that is okay then she can just spread her germs around in her hometown supermarket, lovely. I hope you told her to put on a mask. Genuinely if we end up with a second wave, it is because we are being far too relaxed about this.

MrsR87 · 11/08/2020 13:28

This is infuriating. I would tell.

The rules of quarantine, whether you think they are harsh or not, are there to help prevent the spread.

As these children are going to be going into an environment where there are no real safety measures in place, it’s essentially a slap in the face for the other pupils and their families and the school staff.

This is what worries me the most about going back to school in England in September as a secondary teacher who will be in her third trimester at the time and has been told by the midwife that I should not be going in at all. I can stick the the rules all I like...keeping 75cm away from the pupils (the max I can in my classroom), washing my hands, staying out of the staff room etc but it just takes one person who is infected to break the rules and it’s all for nothing and I have, as my midwife as said, put my baby at risk 😰

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 11/08/2020 13:31

It's amazing how so many know the minutiae of neighbours' and other peoples' to whom they are not close. Our downstairs neighbour died in his sleep a few days ago and we were entirely clueless about it until Monday. But on MN people know the details of neighbour's and acquaintances' finances, taxes, benefits, whereabouts, comings and going, even what they eat (McDonalds, anyone).

malloo · 11/08/2020 13:32

thanks for all the responses and votes everyone, it was really helpful to hear people's views! I've just emailed the school so up to them now to decide how to deal with it.

isnt the school sending a form out to parents to confirm any recent travel and illness? If not, they really should be!

Good Malloo. And dont feel guilty either. X

To what end? People can lie on those, too.
