To tell school they're just back from Spain

In Scotland so schools start back this week. Family with DC in DS's class got back from Spain less than a week ago so should be isolating for 14 days but.... they are sending their kids back this week.

So, should I tell the school? They could be infected and therefore put others at risk. At best it would be inconvenient having to isolate and kids staying home from school again. Or is it none of my business? Not even sure what the school can do about it.

YABU - don't tell, sure they'll be fine
YANBU - tell school, they're being irresponsible

I'd be frustrated too but what can' the school be expected to do ?

Friendsoftheearth · 11/08/2020 06:29

Yup I would email them, the cases in Spain are very very high now, it would not be fair to put all of the other families at risk.

btw for the comments like 'so it starts' what is that all about?! People should be doing the right thing by choice and conscience, this is a pandemic that actually kills people. I would have no problem at all reporting them because the consequences of not doing so are so serious.

Friendsoftheearth · 11/08/2020 06:31

The school can take action if they are told, they can contact the family and tell them they have been made aware that they have travelled to a country that is essential travel only that requires a quarantine, and tell them not to come in! It is not exactly rocket science.

MotorwayDiva · 11/08/2020 06:40

Tell, because if they find out on day on, the whole class then gets sent home for two weeks! How old are the kids, would they even keep it quiet?

BoxhillBertha · 11/08/2020 06:42

Schools have enough to cope with. They won't be the only ones.

nether · 11/08/2020 06:45

If you have a newly deshielded DC, hearing of people doing something as antisocial as this is just horrible.

Friendsoftheearth · 11/08/2020 06:49

box if the parents that it seriously as they should, in the age of social media it won't be hard to find is breaking the quarantine rules.

Our school for instance are asking families to quarantine if they have travelled overseas regardless of where they have been, and we are all expected to sign contracts to confirm we have understood this, we have also the same procedure in place already for October half term and the winter holidays.

**take
**find out

Positivevibesonlyplease · 11/08/2020 07:09

Please inform the school. They are being horrible, selfish and negligent. Imagine how awful you would feel if they infected others and someone died as a result.

Is it a crime not to quarantine? It’s a fine able offence is I not?

SunshineCake · 11/08/2020 07:11

Definitely tell. It is your business if you or your child gets poorly.

nether · 11/08/2020 07:13

I read it as 'that's how an outbreak starts" - it gets carried from place to place.

Yes, there might be others who have been exposed and who also pose a risk, but that's no reason to increase the amount of risky behaviour.

Quarantining before case numbers are rising rapidly is a tool to help stop them ever rising rapidly.

SunshineCake · 11/08/2020 07:16

@Emeraldshamrock

My neighbour & family arrived back from Spain Thursday I met her food shopping on Saturday with no mask, her and the family.
And?

More fool you.

Getoutofbed25 · 11/08/2020 07:18

I’d tell, we all had a duty to keep all children safe and this is flaunting the rules. I would email the school with the details and suggest they may want to take advice from public health. I work in a school and am vulnerable, I’d like my children to continue to have a mum to bring them up, which may not be the case if I were to catch Covid. Think if the staff and other pupils, including your own. People are so stupid they need to follow government guidelines.

Dishwashersaurous · 11/08/2020 07:24

If you don’t want to be specific you can email school and ask what procedure is in place to ensure that quarantine is adhered to and are they doing anything to identify families that have returned from Spain, or Belgium or Portugal or Andorra etc within two weeks

Vodkacranberryplease · 11/08/2020 07:24

I'm in Spain currently and it's safer than the UK. Everyone wears masks (police enforced) when not sitting eating, there's hand sanitiser everywhere and I've had zero contact with non mask wearing people. The rates here (Alicante) are almost non existent.

So the risk is planes/the airport (masks and sanitiser there too though) and trains home all of which they would have from other countries too.

So you would BU to make a problem of it.

Useruseruserusee · 11/08/2020 07:25

I’m SLT in a primary school and this kind of situation is what I am dreading about September (I’m in England).

KaptainKaveman · 11/08/2020 07:25

Generally speaking I'm not one for dobbing people in, but this is serious and potentially life threatening - you should definitely report them.

BluebellForest836 · 11/08/2020 07:27

Jesus, mind your own business. Don’t you have anything better going on in your life right now then to worry about others.

Friendsoftheearth · 11/08/2020 07:28

vodka Spain sported a 2873 new infections yesterday! It is heading towards 3,000 and will quickly multiply in the next few days, I am afraid the virus is already out of control in many areas of Spain, so how can you compare that with the UK that is averaging 600-700 new cases?!

if you are going to make sweeping statements, can you please ensure that they are at least accurate, and based on the facts.

Peddling lies that Spain is safer than the UK will put many more lives at risk.

LaurieMarlow · 11/08/2020 07:29

Totally agree. It’s very important that schools open and stay open, parents have to play their part in doing that safely. This kind of behaviour is atrocious and it needs to become unacceptable.

LaurieMarlow · 11/08/2020 07:31

The OP’s acting for the good of everyone. This isn’t the time to turn a blind eye to selfish irresponsibility.

Rainuntilseptember · 11/08/2020 07:31

I'm anxious about being back at work this week but this would double if I thought there were pupils in class whose parents had ignored the quarantine and put my life (and others) at risk. Maybe I'll start each lesson with a literacy "write a description of your holiday" task.
Selfish beyond belief - and could close a school almost before it's opened.

LaurieMarlow · 11/08/2020 07:36

I really wouldn’t do this. I’d just be direct. ‘You may not be aware, but x family is just back from Spain, I thought you should know’. Give them the info they need rather than hinting.

KaptainKaveman · 11/08/2020 07:36

Huh? How is being alarmed at breaking quarantine regulations - which are designed to curtail the spreading of a deadly virus - worrying about others? what a bizarre way of looking at things.
