Dog poo in bins, aibu?

We live close to a large farm with a lot of land. It’s not a ‘working farm’, it’s quite a hippy venture and hosts (often rather noisy) camping, small festivals and gatherings. There are a few houses and caravans on the land where people live.

It has a public right of way through it and we use it to walk our dog as does every other local. We meticulously pick up dog poo and even pick up other peoples if we see it’s been left.

There are a few large (normal household refuse) wheelie bins belonging to the farm at the entrance which we put our dog poo bags in.

Yesterday there was a laminated sign stuck to the bins. It said that that the bin men will not take dog poo and it was disrespectful to expect them to and to take it home.

I was under the impression that Poo bags could be put in wheelie bins and don’t feel we’ve been disrespectful. Aibu?

Dog poo bags can go in normal household waste bins but I wouldn’t put them in someone else’s bin, same as you wouldn’t dump rubbish in someone else’s roadside bin.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/08/2020 08:24

I suspect they don't want your dog poo in their bins. It is disprespectful to use someone elses bins for your rubbish, let alone dog shit. Take it home and put it in your own wheelie bin, like the rest of us dog owners do, absent public bins!

I am bemused you think it is OK to use someone elses household bin for anything!

cupoftea84 · 10/08/2020 08:24

I wouldn't put dog poo in someone else's residential bin. Imagine after 2 weeks sitting there, especially in hot weather, it'll be horrible.
If everyone who is walking there dog there is doing it I bet there's a large amount. The council could start refusing to collect their bins and then you're causing them a huge problem.

Drumple · 10/08/2020 08:25

Rules for commercial waste are different and the farm will be a commercial property.

Just take your bags home and put them in your own bin.

KrisAkabusi · 10/08/2020 08:27

Stop using other people's bins!!

HillyJilly · 10/08/2020 08:27

I wouldn't do this, but then I wouldn't put any waste product or rubbish in anyone else's bin either? Why would you think that is okay?

Strugglingtodomybest · 10/08/2020 08:27

I wouldn't ever use someone else's bin. I think the problem is, if you put your poo in there, it's not in a black bag, and the bin men only take the black bags, they don't pick up any bits that might also be the bin. Then the owners are left to sort out getting the dog poo bag in a black bag.

Starbuggy · 10/08/2020 08:27

It’s very rude to put your dog poo in someone else’s bins. The bins are for use by people staying at the campsite, they’re not public bins. Take your dog poo home or to a public bin!

UnfinishedSymphon · 10/08/2020 08:27

Why are you putting your dog poo in someone else's bin? Just take it home

dementedpixie · 10/08/2020 08:27

yes you are but. You dont put dog waste in someone else's bin, how disgusting. You can normally put them in public waste bins (you can where i live anyway)

Elouera · 10/08/2020 08:28

You could ask to council to installs specific dog poo bins, but putting in someone elses bin IS grim! Imagine your home was at the beginning on the pathway and EVERYONE put their poo in your bin?

LaurieFairyCake · 10/08/2020 08:28

Yes you can put it in public waste bins

But there's ISNT a public bin

lljkk · 10/08/2020 08:29

I sneak recycling (flat cans I find on roads) into other people's recycling bins when on long walks but very rarely other stuff. No biggie, OP. Just don't do it again.

TitianaTitsling · 10/08/2020 08:31

Stop using other people's bins!!
Yep!!
vanillandhoney · 10/08/2020 08:32

Nothing wrong with putting dog poo in a wheelie bin but only if it's your own.

Take it home and dispose of it there. Or find an actual public bin.

SimonJT · 10/08/2020 08:33

As you think its okay to use someone elses bin, I’m guessing you would have no problem with someone entering your property and using your bin on a regular basis?

QweenMama · 10/08/2020 08:33

Just put it in the bin. It's not like they're recording you? Is it against the law?

Who wants to walk home with dog poo anyway. That's unhygienic

Grandmi · 10/08/2020 08:33

Take it home and put in your own bin ! The other bins are not public and who wants dog pooh in their bin ? I am a dog owner and would be annoyed if people used our bin to dump pooh bags!

vanillandhoney · 10/08/2020 08:36

If it's in a poo bag why is it unhygienic? Yes, it smells a bit but that's part of owning a dog. Just double bag it or use scented bags if it bothers you that much.
Finfintytint · 10/08/2020 08:36

QweenMama, technically it’s fly tipping.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/08/2020 08:38

Maybe no one wants to walk home carrying dog poo, but if you own a dog and want to walk it somewhere with no public bins (or areas where 'stick and flick' is ok - not most farmland ) then absolutely that's what you should do.
SerenDippitty · 10/08/2020 08:40

There is no way I’d put my dog’s poo in someone else’s bin!

Haggisfish · 10/08/2020 08:41

I would rather someone put rubbish in my bin after a walk than left it out.

Drumple · 10/08/2020 08:42

The farm will have to pay for their rubbish to be lifted.

If everyone who walks the path is putting dog poo in their bins, there must be loads and loads of poo in the bin. And that’s gross. Just take your dog poo home.

Clymene · 10/08/2020 08:43

I don't like walking home with bags of dog poo swinging from my hand (or my dog's lead) but I do because I'm a responsible dog owner.

The fact that the farm rents out space to campers and other ventures is totally irrelevant. Take your dog shit home!
