I’m sick of reading about people moaning about school reopening, lack of social distancing etc. What do you want? DC off school for years and all the long term implications that will cause /is causing.
If you don’t like it, don’t send your dc but stop complaining.

I agree fripp. What ssimple to introduce in primary eg class bubbles is not possible in secondary when you have sets for different subjects, options, clubs, music lessons, science lessons etc etc. It's for more complicated and less possible to stay in class bubbles.

FrippEnos · 09/08/2020 12:05

even if they are showing symptoms or ill?

dreamingbohemian · 09/08/2020 12:12

They wear masks in the hallways but not at their desks. So maybe this can be done in the UK too?

I completely agree about distinguishing between primary and secondary.

Universities are mainly going to be online only this autumn, that seems a better model for secondary.

notheragain4 · 09/08/2020 12:13

@FrippEnos of course! My plan is to wipe out the whole school, obviously.

Thefab3 · 09/08/2020 12:14

I’m a teacher but in a different area of education now due to having young kids and no childcare. However I’m on a Facebook group with lots of other teachers and I can’t get over the comments.
I agree completely that teachers need to have ppe and should be working in as safe as an environment as possible (I’m going to be doing some subbing work too) but the comments!
“It will never work “, Constantly talking about how selfish parents are sending their kids back, constantly sharing articles on how contagious kids are or any outbreaks where there are children. How it should all be online , in the almost months (I’m in Ireland ) my kids have been off there’s been no online teaching whatsoever. I can’t get over it , do some people never want school to reopen or ever go back to teaching and I’m talking as a teacher and I have plenty of family working in hospitals everyday..

dreamingbohemian · 09/08/2020 12:15

nother yes us too!

Thefab3 · 09/08/2020 12:15

*almost 6 months off school

Thefab3 · 09/08/2020 12:20

And also if there is a massive surge and schools have do close they have to close. It still should be attempted as safely as possible though otherwise we have to look into permanent alternatives which work for working parents and the consistent education of our children.

FrippEnos · 09/08/2020 12:22

Thefab3

But some of the guidance will never work.

And If we are playing the FB card, the groups that I am on everyone wants to go back but do so in as safe a way as possible.

Thefab3 · 09/08/2020 12:24

@FrippEnos, what’s the alternative?

FrippEnos · 09/08/2020 12:24

Thefab3

A crosspost there.

What people should be focusing on is getting it right the first time.

As we have seen it is a lot easier to go in with more restrictions and lift them than go in softly and then try to enforce more.

But it also means that the wider community needs to give up some of its privileges and recognise that they will also have an effect on schools opening and staying open.

Marzipan12 · 09/08/2020 12:26

Fab3 instead of everyone full time in full classes it would be safer to have smaller classes and have pupils in school for half the time with work set at home the rest of the time.

Emeraldshamrock · 09/08/2020 12:28

@Thefab3 It is awful no online teaching. I think it was down to the individual school my DC started Google classroom, teacher was in contact daily with emails and weekly phone calls.
I know some schools weren't doing it but the majority did.

notheragain4 · 09/08/2020 12:28

@Marzipan12 and what about parents who have to work....?

corythatwas · 09/08/2020 12:29

Ok. So if you have a child with health problems, or a shielding sibling, or whatever, you have to accept that your child may have to be home-schooled for the rest of their childhood, because once they've given up their place they may not be able to get it back?

Once schools are open, most likely there won't be the option of "we'd like to keep him home for 3 months until his mum has finished her cancer treatment". Any non-attendance of a registered child is likely to be treated as truancy, with the usual threats of fines and prison for non-complying parents.

FrippEnos · 09/08/2020 12:29
@FrippEnos, what’s the alternative?
Stricter measures.

Temperature taking on entry to school.
Having the spary booths that they do in other countries
Being sensible with class sizes.
Having an attempt at social distancing.
Masks
Only some years in full time others on a rota.
More money for cleaning, washing stations and toilets.

More rigorous testing of pupils and teachers, including before going back to school.
Enforcing children that are sick or showing symptoms to SI
Not bring back fines for non attendance.
Actually have a plan as well as a plan b or even c.

All of these are just thoughts but very possible, or they would have been if we didn't have such a shower of shit in control.

Marzipan12 · 09/08/2020 12:30

How will they work when bubbles are sent home to isolate for ,14 days due to infection in their bubble? It's a very real possibility of full classes go back for ,6 hours a day in a small classroom.

FrippEnos · 09/08/2020 12:31
@Marzipan12 and what about parents who have to work....?
Again something needs to be in place.

It needs to be figured out properly and sensibly so that it works first time.

But it would of course need money to implement and the government has said no money to schools or education.

justanotherneighinparadise · 09/08/2020 12:32

Completely agree. Give you your kids school place and home school. Everyone’s a winner!

notheragain4 · 09/08/2020 12:32

@Marzipan12 well intermittent isolation will be easier to manage than ongoing part time. My son was in school for the whole of summer term and funnily enough not one bout of self isolation needed, have you seen the figures? You're being ridiculous.

FrippEnos · 09/08/2020 12:33

Again this shouldn't be about blaming schools, but about somebody sending in a sick child or coming in to work sick.

Would you prefer that the entire school gets it?
Because under the current guidance for secondary that is a possibility.

notheragain4 · 09/08/2020 12:34

@FrippEnos what could that "something" be?! Parents work in a plethora of environments, furloughing has been necessary but financially crippling, we have to move on and not starve children of their education. Education needs to take priority, children need to be in school, full time, parents need to be working. There is no other answer.

stayathomer · 09/08/2020 12:36

In Germany they had a more thorough reopening than the UK, early studies also show very little transmission.
Unfortunately on Friday 2 extremely large schools closed in Germany. There are talks about others in germany (I've relatives over there), unfortunately we're all having the same conversation. This actually worries me more than a lot of things

Marzipan12 · 09/08/2020 12:38

Not their. Your son went back under very different conditions to what will be in place in September. I'm not being ridiculous. Full classrooms of 30 kids is just asking for outbreaks. I would rather my child attended part time in smaller bubbles than risk being sent home ever week which is a possibility.

stayathomer · 09/08/2020 12:42

notheragain

Oh do I hope people do this, we are moving to an oversubscribed area so would be great if there was space for my kids who would be there religiously from the start of term!
Sorry that doesn't seem fair, you getting a place because someone is afraid or shielding. Surely they cant do that
