To be livid at this hotel stay

Butternutter01 · 02/08/2020 01:00

Staying in hotel in Scotland. Single woman, travelling alone.

It’s gone midnight on a Saturday and I was fast asleep, only to have the door open and two men walk into my hotel room?!

Got dressed and went downstairs to reception as frankly I was concerned for my safety. The night manager is basically blaming this on me, saying he has no record of me being in the room, so apparently not his fault?! Yet they assigned me the key on Thursday night!

Went back up to my room, my key now doesn’t work. Back downstairs, oh it’s because we have no record of you. Yes but that’s not my fault?! Booked online weeks in advance, checked in fine AFAIK.

AIBU to be livid at this?

Fucking horrible, there's no excuse fir this.. I'm angry on your Behalf. Hope you feel safe ok and can sleep xx don't let them blame you.

babydisney · 02/08/2020 03:42

That's awful and really gives me anxiety. I hope you push the unprofessional behaviour of the night manager and general safety risk, hope you are OK though x

custardbear · 02/08/2020 03:43

Kick off tomorrow, politely, with the duty manager. Ask to speak to the hotel general mananger if you get no joy. Totally inappropriate you're blamed for their mistake, and they put you in danger and your belongings if you weren't there and a couple of blokes had access to your stuff

Purpleartichoke · 02/08/2020 03:48

I have had this happen twice, both times at very high end hotels. I now always chain my door the second I walk into any hotel room.

Namaste6 · 02/08/2020 03:54

How awful for you OP. That must have been terrifying. I'm sure the men feel awful too. It must have been a shock for them too to discover someone in what they thought was their room. Utter incompetence. Attitude of the night manager is gobsmacking. Ask for a meeting with the hotel manager as soon as he arrives on shift. You could possibly have this meeting with the men too? Either way, I think you're all looking at free stays.

PG2018 · 02/08/2020 03:54

Hope your getting some sleep OP and get a better response to your complaint tomorrow

pintoffginplz · 02/08/2020 03:57

The nightshift manager sounds horrible, you can demand another room op. Hotels have policys when lone women stay at them. The fact that 2 men know what room your in is breaking them. Ask them about the policys Tomorrow, also say about the nightshift manager, they should have moved you into a new room straight away

Cherrybakewellll · 02/08/2020 04:00

You should also raise it as a health and safety concern in terms of if there was a fire they wouldn't have tried to account for you. That's a serious, serious failing.

Mummyrowland · 02/08/2020 04:04

Absolutely shocking.

I'd Def be complaining on the security front and also on the safety aspect as if there was a fire did they know you were there??? Massive complaint would be launched with serious compensation (not more free nights stays or anything like that)

sergeilavrov · 02/08/2020 04:13

The PP who recommended carrying a door wedge is correct - but carry two and use at different points of the door. Lots of hotels have carpets, so a strong intruder can take advantage of the give in the carpet when there is a gap and push the door open enough to get a hand in to dispose of the wedge. By putting another one further along the frame, the resistance is greater and they believe there are secondary security devices in place. Same for adjoining rooms. None of the fancy devices work any better than this.

beautifulmonument · 02/08/2020 04:15

I always barricade the door when I stay in hotel rooms alone. My contraptions can become quite complex because I try to use something that will make a lot of noise if pushed, like an ironing board against a tall metal lamp!

AllNaturalIngredients · 02/08/2020 04:25

Something similar happened to my boyfriend & I. He was already in the city drinking with his mates so I was to drive down & meet him after work. His battery was running out so he told me he’d meet me in the hotel room.

I called at reception, found out he’d already checked in so they gave me the spare key and off I went to the room to meet him ...only when I let myself in, suitcase in tow, I met him coming out of bathroom soaking wet (& quite intoxicated) after taking a shower and looking utterly confused.

When he came in to the room he seen girls stuff all over the room & thought I’d made it there before him & it was my stuff. So he jumped straight into the shower (expecting he was getting lucky when I got back). Only they’d given us the keys to a room already assigned to someone else but they weren’t there. When he left to explain they’d made a mistake they got nasty with my boyfriend, wondering why it took so long for him to realise etc. They eventually apologised & refunded our stay.

I bet the people staying in the room never found out but I wonder what would have happened if they’d walked in find a drunk naked man in their shower

I was the person "barging in" in a cockup like this once. it was a Crown Plaza hotel. I had arrived around 23:00 and the normal check in staff had already left and the only person on duty was the night manager. he clearly didn't know his way around the computer system but he was hampered by the fact that bookings and room assignments were on two different systems that couldn't interface with each other. I had an email confirming my booking but there was no record of my booking on his system. the day staff had left him a pile of print-outs one for each guest who was expected to check in that evening, along with their room assignment. he picked one of those rooms - presumably hoping that one of the pile would be a no-show, and gave me a key. I went to the room and walked in on a woman sitting in bed in her pyjamas reading. embarrassing for both of us but could have been worse. night manager tried again with a different room and this time came with me to check the room was empty, and had no further problems.

if there's no security chain you can usually double-turn the catch to lock a hotel room from the inside.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/08/2020 05:40

@vikingwife

How did you get your room key if you didn’t check in? This is so not your fault. I would be going full Karen on this & shouting my complaint from the rooftops. This is a serious breach of safety. Name & shame OP!
What a disgusting reaction from the manager. I like the idea of door wedges.

Vikingwife
I think you often talk sense. But do women really have to demean themselves “full on Karen”?!!

AngryPancake · 02/08/2020 05:47

Is this the Radisson in Glasgow by any chance?

ivykaty44 · 02/08/2020 05:54

Complain well

Don’t go in all guns blazing

Give them the issue, tell them factually why they are in the wrong - they failed to check you in Hunan error and this lead to two people being given the key to your room by night porter

Tell them what you want

Not paying for last nights accommodation as didn’t have a good nights sleep due to their mistakes

If they say they can’t do whatever you ask for

Well explain why I should pay?

StarlightLady · 02/08/2020 06:19

I stay in hotels for work a lot (or at least used to), I’ve had things go wrong at times, but nothing as bad as this.

‘Suggest you get the contact details of the MD/Chief Exec from websearches and contact them.

Also, are you self employed or do you work for a company / organisation? If the latter can you also ask someone there to take this up on your behalf as well?

Bemorechicken · 02/08/2020 06:23

I'd so be demanding a full refund.

itsgettingweird · 02/08/2020 06:30

Oh my word I'd have been horrified.

Past experiences if a man or even men walking into my room in the middle of the night would have caused me no end of trauma.

That's a serious breach of safety and I agree a full refund is the minimum.

And complaint also about the response of no record etc. I assume they've checked you in to give you a key? I assume you've taken breakfast and maybe even an evening meal in the package.

Boohoohoohooho · 02/08/2020 06:32

That’s annoying. I stay in a lot of hotels and I think it’s unusual not to have a way of locking the door from the inside.

I’d complain but it sounds like a simple human error issue. I wouldn’t be shouting and raging about it but I’d have a whinge.

Pineapple5678 · 02/08/2020 06:33

Op have you checked your booking to ensure you booked for the correct number of nights?
I would certainly be making a complaint in the morning.

Remona · 02/08/2020 06:35

Wow. You’ve every right to be livid. I’m currently on my own in a hotel in Scotland. I’ve stayed in hotels all over the world on my own and I’ve never had this happen to me. I’ve stayed in large chains, budget chains and independents and never had this. I’d be kicking up a stink good and proper.

I just cannot see how this has happened. You’ve obviously checked in and you’ve been given a key. How the hell can they say this is your fault? The receptionist who supposedly checked you in has cocked up big time. If it were me I’d be at the desk first thing speaking to the duty manager.

I’m surprised from reading PP how regularly this seems to happen. As I say, I’ve travelled solo for many years and have never experienced this. It’s worrying.

And thank you to the poster who suggested taking wedges for the door. What an excellent idea! I’ll be buying some next time I spot any.

Sexnotgender · 02/08/2020 06:38

That’s awful.

No record of you in that room? Well ask them who’s fault that is then?

PleaseChooseAnother · 02/08/2020 06:38

I have one of these for when I stay in a hotel room

https://www.amazon.co.uk/DoorJammer-DJ3-Portable-Security-Protection/dp/B07HM7X6TT/ref=mpssa118?dchild=1&keywords=hotel+door+wedge&qid=1596346561&sprefix=hotel+door+wed&sr=8-8

This is exactly what I worry about happening. I'd be complaining about the problem and about the night manager

Oblomov20 · 02/08/2020 06:45

This is very poor. Little unnerves me, but I wouldn't like this at all!
