To be livid at this hotel stay

Butternutter01 · 02/08/2020 01:00

Staying in hotel in Scotland. Single woman, travelling alone.

It’s gone midnight on a Saturday and I was fast asleep, only to have the door open and two men walk into my hotel room?!

Got dressed and went downstairs to reception as frankly I was concerned for my safety. The night manager is basically blaming this on me, saying he has no record of me being in the room, so apparently not his fault?! Yet they assigned me the key on Thursday night!

Went back up to my room, my key now doesn’t work. Back downstairs, oh it’s because we have no record of you. Yes but that’s not my fault?! Booked online weeks in advance, checked in fine AFAIK.

AIBU to be livid at this?

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken women do walk alone at night. Not everyone feels this way. You cannot unilaterally decide how every woman on this planet feels.
Some women consider risks and take steps to reduce them, some are super paranoid and go to extreme lengths, some don't give a shit and do what they like without thought for consequence.

JinglingHellsBells · 02/08/2020 11:00

On checking this morning it seems I was never checked in correctly as no money has been charged to my credit card. Checked out super early this morning with no one around to complain to!

so you managed to access your CC online this morning.
Why would you bother to do that rather than go to the desk and ask them to check your booking, properly?

was this a Premier Inn or Travel Lodge?
There is always someone on the desk at a PI and they would refund your money if you didn't sleep.

Guess it wasn't a PI!

I think you made a mistake not to buzz at reception so you could check out properly.

For a start, you owe them money which even if it's their fault as an admin error, they can pursue you for.

Secondly, it makes you look a bit sneaky and won't do you any favours if you email the company CEO/ head office.

JinglingHellsBells · 02/08/2020 11:00

The money may very well have been taken off your card but it can take 5 days to show.

Blondiney · 02/08/2020 11:01

Christ, OP I'm furious on your behalf!

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 02/08/2020 11:04

Sounds like an unfortunate error.

I was given a room in a London hotel and walked in to find a man wrapped just in a towel crashed out on the bed.

Not my fault, not his. I had checked in online but also at the front desk.

Sounds very bizarre (and unacceptable) that you seem to have slept in a hotel room with nobody knowing you were there and (possibly) not even being charged for it. There must be a big glitch in their online system but now you've established it wasn't their fault you shouldn't be livid.

Aridane · 02/08/2020 11:08

That’s awful - you poor thing!

RunningFromInsanity · 02/08/2020 11:08

Wow some massive overreactions. Serious compensation? Tweeting the CEO? Calm down.

There was a mix up.

If the OP was that bothered (which she’s obviously not as she just left in the end) then a polite (not ‘furious’ or ‘livid’) conversation in the morning and perhaps a free breakfast or refund for that night is sufficient.

In any case the OP has now hopefully got the whole stay for free now anyway.

Aridane · 02/08/2020 11:09

There isn't a chain on the door??

Eh? I don’t think I’ve ever been in a hotel room with a chain on the inside of the door

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 02/08/2020 11:13

What is odd really is that when the two men went back to reception the OP wasn't booted out for being in a room she hadn't checked in for, or apparently paid for!

JinglingHellsBells · 02/08/2020 11:13

Eh? I don’t think I’ve ever been in a hotel room with a chain on the inside of the door

You are very unusual.

All Premier Inns have a door chain and many other hotels do too.

How is that odd? I don't think she ever said she didn't check in. How else would she get a key to the room?

If they had capacity for other people they would allow her to stay in the room.

beautifulmonument · 02/08/2020 11:16

Not an actual chain but usually a sliding bolt thingy that does the same thing

DaisyDreaming · 02/08/2020 11:16

I’ve been in a couple of hotels like this, one big expensive one where keys seemed to be able to open doors. During the day when most people were out I was nearly tempted to go along a corridor and see how many doors I could open to make a point. Another family hotel would lose track of who was in each room, they didn’t even know which rooms were empty and which had been assigned to a guest. I don’t travel alone but if I did I think I would want one of those hotel door locks that you can buy, they have a safety release so you can release them quickly if you need to escape

KorkMum · 02/08/2020 11:17

I used to go away just me and my young child when I was a single mum. If this happened I'd have freaked and probably started screaming. Well done for managing to stay so calm! They put your safety in danger.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 02/08/2020 11:20

Night managers are notoriously shit at dealing with stuff. Go down this morning and talk to the duty manager.

Once years ago I was in a hotel on my own and someone tried the door - I ignored it. Ten minutes later they came back up with the night manager who used his pass key to open the door, then asked me if I was 'sure' I didn't know the complete stranger trying to get into my room. FFS. You must have had the fright of your life.

Aridane · 02/08/2020 11:23

I always barricade the door when I stay in hotel rooms alone. My contraptions can become quite complex because I try to use something that will make a lot of noise if pushed, like an ironing board against a tall metal lamp!

Do people really do this sort of thing?

FlamingoAndJohn · 02/08/2020 11:26

How is that odd? I don't think she ever said she didn't check in. How else would she get a key to the room?

This is true but when the night porter looked at the details on the system it said that she hadn’t checked in so he could have assumed that she had got the key by other means.

CatandtheFiddle · 02/08/2020 11:28

On checking this morning it seems I was never checked in correctly as no money has been charged to my credit card

That's hardly your fault.

Soubds like an incompetently run hotel all round. Don't go back.

EggBoxes · 02/08/2020 11:30

I had a similar experience in a chain hotel in London, away for work. Night guard let himself in to my room at about 1am to give me my invoice Hmm

I shouted at him to get out of my room and reported the incident to reception at breakfast who were highly dubious about my story. When I returned later in the day they'd been able to check the system (key card - so all recorded) and were very apologetic.

I'd like to say that I've learned my lesson and carry a door stop around with me now, but I don't.

Butternutter01 · 02/08/2020 11:31

Obviously I just thought it had been a normal check in, reserved online, turned up with my name and reference, got given key/room number and told about breakfast parking etc.

odd - I've stayed in 3 hotels in the past week - and 2 two weeks ago - all big chains - including PI - no chain in any - just a lock on the handle
ddl1 · 02/08/2020 11:39

Appalling. I've never experienced anything so irresponsible with regard to a hotel or other accommodation. I bet they don't forget people when it comes to charging them for their stay! It MAY be that they're understaffed due to the current situation, but it doesn't excuse such a thing. You should put in a complaint!

tankflybos · 02/08/2020 11:40

"so you managed to access your CC online this morning.
Why would you bother to do that rather than go to the desk and ask them to check your booking, properly?"

How is opening an app on your phone difficult? Confused You surely had to do that to "access" MN?

All premier inns don't have chains on the door, some weird replies on this thread. You can often double lock a hotel door by turning twice but it's never crossed my mind to create an elaborate barricade.

OP, you'll likely be charged today, you're not always charged on check in. Bit silly to have just left the hotel if you were as distressed as you say.

tankflybos · 02/08/2020 11:42

@ddl1

"I bet they don't forget people when it comes to charging them for their stay!"

Really? Well the OP claims they've done exactly that

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/08/2020 11:43

It goes without saying that that is completely and utterly unacceptable.
Personally if it were me I'd be going to the press and making a Holy show of them.
