According to the data, the South West’s R number is the same as the North West at +1. Will local councils be trying to sort it before the government impose official stricter lockdown measures as in the NW?

@PhilCornwall1 When you are elderly, you will realise that stereotyping can be quite hurtful. I'm not "bloody aggressive" just as all you younger people are obviously not guilty of stereotyping. Sorry you have some miserable old farts where you live!

@cologne4711

Cornwall is naice people’s summer playground

nothing to do with being "naice" (although half the population of my "naice" town go there in the summer - in normal times). I just don't get it myself - why would you want to go somewhere that is always so busy?

I do hope the tourists are remembering there's a virus around though - when I visited my mum a few weeks ago people in Dartmouth in Devon definitely were not!

We went on a tourist train yesterday on the Settle to Carlisle line. Everyone on the train, at the stations, and in the destination (Appleby) were social distancing, wearing masks when required etc. We felt perfectly safe on and off the train.

Perhaps it's a different demographic/societal class who go on a tourist train as opposed to a beach??

GrumpyMug2 · 01/08/2020 12:22

I'm in Swindon and due to the outbreaks in the workplaces, I can see Swindon being locked down soon. We are almost at the same cases per population as Greater Manchester so better keep an eye on Twitter every evening!

goldfinchfan · 01/08/2020 12:34

Locals cannot safely use their local beaches, too dangerous too crowded,

I will be pleased if Dorset has a lockdown and then the air will be less polluted with diesel.

We simply have too many people in small places

AlecTrevelyan006 · 01/08/2020 12:45

chances of catching coronavirus on a beach is virtually zero

You can go to the pub, a restaurant, a tourist attraction (but you can’t stay anywhere overnight on holiday), the hairdresser, nail bar etc but you can’t sit in your Aunty Pat’s conservatory?? Or meet your mum in Preston, in a large park at a social distance. How’s that logical?

Maybe if Aunty Pat got herself a card reader, and called herself a business, her conservatory would become magically safe 🤔[/quote]
You can meet your mum in a park, just not a private space. I agree it’s all illogical, but that bit isn’t true.

Picklypickles · 01/08/2020 12:55

I hope not, I'm in West Devon and we've had no cases for something like 5 weeks now, I've just started feeling brave enough to start going to see my mum again!

boys3 · 01/08/2020 13:17

@LadyCatStark

It won’t because it’s the playground for the white, southern middle classes. Wigan had 2, yes 2, cases last week and it’s part of the northern lockdown. Make of that what you will.
Wigan cases

28/07/2020 3

26/07/2020 3
25/07/2020 2

Looks more like 26, still that second digit is so easy to forget to type!

I've some sympathy with you though as 26 is still nothing to get too excited about given the size of the population, plus the trend looks to be downward.

God, you make me sound like I'm 20. I wish I was!!

If you look here all the SW areas are green except one, Cornwall...

That beach doesn't look any busier than my local one. People were in groups, distanced, tents and windbreaks around themselves, distancing in water etc.

Our town has had 2 cases in 17 days.

PhilCornwall1 · 01/08/2020 13:58

This beach is local to us and everyone is distancing fine. It's not exactly "rammed" either.

The South West is on course to be locked down next
Janleverton · 01/08/2020 14:00

@Pericombobulations I hope you get to get here next year!
We are very boring when we come, rarely travelling beyond the beach (and usually on the wet bit because I hate crowds and other people) apart from local shop for supplies. Of course with facemasks now and not en masse. It’s such a lovely beach that no need to wander too far. Odd walks up and down the coast but not much more.

UnfinishedSymphon · 01/08/2020 14:03

I'm in Greater Manchester, we haven't been locked down, we just can't go to other's houses and gardens or meet others indoors. Our household can still go out and about, shops, bars and restaurants are still open, parks and gyms are open etc

Emmie12345 · 01/08/2020 14:11

Not bothered about tourists potentially bringing coronavirus , just that everywhere is too rammed and hard to park etc

Cannot wait till they all leave again in sept

SachaStark · 01/08/2020 14:20

@PhilCornwall1, hello!! We are neighbours! That is my local beach, too!

Although, I’ve been using the small and hidden beaches recently for paddle boarding and swimming off in the evenings.

ScrapThatThen · 01/08/2020 14:24

Just coming back from Cornwall, plenty of space even on popular beaches on sunny days. Made to feel very welcome. Businesses with good procedures in place. Great holiday. Didn't go within 2 m of anyone.

@Orangeblossom777 that map though is little more than simplistic nonsense, which the Graun's supporting report pretty much admits.

In the mad world of the Graun 1 to 2 (eg a 100% increase ) is bad but 1000 to 1100 (a 10% increase but 100 additional cases) isn't.

Whilst Cornwall's cases have indeed increased the most recent weekly rate in still only 3.32 per 100,000 people as opposed to Swindon's 29.7.

iknowimcoming · 01/08/2020 14:53

We are heading to Bude in 2 weeks and will be very strictly observing sd'ing and wearing masks, but also have plans to eat out sometimes (DH has his birthday while we're there) safely visit the beaches and go on long walks - I really don't think I'm a risk to locals anymore than if I went out in my home town (which incidentally I haven't been) PS Any good restaurant recommendations gratefully received Grin

CoffeeandCroissant · 01/08/2020 14:58

I hope there will be some great science coming out of this.

I'd love to know if a C-19 infected person is in a room 10 metres by 10 metres how many other people would need to be with them in that room for there to be a greater than 50% chance of 2 people catching C-19 from them in an hour.

I'd then like to know if a C-19 infected person is on a beach how many people would need to be on that beach within the same 10 metre by 10 metre space with them for there to be a greater than 50% chance of 2 people catching C-19 from them in an hour.

Proudtocare · 01/08/2020 15:05

I'm in North Devon and I havent been able to take my kids to Woolacombe or Saunton or anywhere like that. It is HEAVING. Apparently A361 at a standstill today.....however we still have very very low cases here. 2 cases in last week in ND.

Proudtocare · 01/08/2020 15:07

This was Woolacoombe on Thurs. Anyone who knows it will know how big a beach it is. So it really is heaving there.

The South West is on course to be locked down next

I don't think the crowded beaches will make a difference to the cases at all. I think community transmission is the problem. BBQs in peoples gardens, people in and out of peoples houses, sharing food, drinks etc. Oh and pubs and indoor venues..
