In my own little world.
Mask in bag.
Walked in.
Noticed a few funny looks.
Went to the salad counter.
Girl behind is looking at me funny.
It took me 10 mins to realise I didn't have my mask on my bloody face.
Has anyone else forgot yet ?
Or am I just totally useless

Im in Massachussets and we have all been wearing them for several months by law, but I started well before that as I am high risk. I keep one of mine in the glove box and the other on the peg with my sunglasses (in case Im not driving). They ask you to explain or leave shops here if you dont have one, but to be honest I havent seen anyone not wearing one, I dont know why there are so many exempt people in the UK, but not here? Technically I would be exempt, but you wouldnt catch me in any indoor/enclosed place without one.

DominaShantotto · 31/07/2020 15:16

I've had nothing but compassion and concern I'm coping OK from shop staff when I've gone into the store naked (I only have been in once for an absolutely essential pharmacy run) when I was visibly having a panic attack (the staff know I have them - we're too bloody regular in our local Tesco and so fairly known) and wearing an exemption lanyard (the masks trigger PTSD massively in me)... but the filthy looks from some of the shoppers have been vile. Well the bits of the filthy looks I could see...

I'm avoiding shops wherever it's humanly possible as I just can't stand the whole toxic environment about if someone has an exemption/the assumptions exempt people are "putting it on"/the "that's not a proper mask" policing and everything.

I would love someone to try something like finding a replica helmet from Knightmare and try going around in that to see the reactions it got though.

ShagMeRiggins · 31/07/2020 17:02

@Koennt

I am an anti-masker, but am compromising with a scarf, which I keep in my handbag. It's a very thin silk one, so takes up no space and isn't too hot. It minds its own business in there until it's needed, so there's no chance of forgetting it.
Why are you an anti-masker? Pure curiosity, no agenda here.
Sidewinder30 · 31/07/2020 17:44

I've honestly not seen a single person in the supermarket here (Italy) without a mask. Not once since the requirement came into effect in March. Clearly I'm not an official census! I'm sure it happens. But what % of people in the UK are exceptions? I mean, even if you have a good reason for not wearing a mask, you can still be spreading disease. And undermining the confidence of other shoppers, who then don't want to go out as the activity is riskier. No?

DGRossetti · 31/07/2020 17:49

I dont know why there are so many exempt people in the UK, but not here?

Maybe "Cummings" is a popular surname ?

I've done ok remembering to put my mask on but automatically took if off coming out of a store the other day and was putting away when I realized I was still in the middle of the shopping centre! At least the mask hid my blushes as I put it back on.
On the same trip I saw someone with their jacket on back to front using the hood as an improvised mask. I was very impressed!

Koennt · 31/07/2020 18:18

@ShagMeRiggins Just the usual blether about civil rights, thin end of the wedge, etc, etc, etc. Plus masks are filthy. I saw someone in Tesco today drop hers on the floor, accidentally tread on it, then put it back on her face.

Scrumptiousbears · 31/07/2020 18:20

I still forget my bags when I go shopping g let alone masks. Lucky a lot of shops have them as you walk in.

Xenia · 31/07/2020 18:21

I just was in a shop in a mask (I am anti mask) and 3 others had none on and I just assumed they were exempt or against it on principle both of which was fine with me - 2 of them were muslims in long black clothes with head covered but not face and the other was a man who looked Spanish and was on his way back from work - no mask. I hope it's a trend to less mask wearing.

mumwon · 31/07/2020 18:49

@Xenia of course no white British avoid wearing a mask (is there a emoji with a raised eyebrow?)
However there are some places where it gets confusing
We went into coffee shop to have something to eat /drink obviously no face mask - I needed to use loo (just out in corridor which leads to charity shop but not actually in it) people coming into coffee shop had masked - & its also where do you put it (washable ones) when you take it off? In your pocket/in your bag? I fold mine so the outside is inside (if you see what I mean) so the dirtiest bit from other does touch anything
But what else can you do?

Oblomov20 · 31/07/2020 19:04

Drove miles to the biggest Sainsbury's. With Ds1. Both realised we didn't have our masks.
Drove home. Got masks. Went to local Sainsbury's.

So angry.
With myself.
First time ever. Will not happen again.

BatShite · 31/07/2020 19:14

Surprised you werent shouted at by some randomer. Dh is exempt and has had no issues so far with staff/security. But the amount of rude aggressive random people who seem to think they have the right to scream in his face or challenge him (even after watching his talking to security and being 'let away' without one on too..) has been ridiculous. I really feel for people who cannot wear them and are not as..outgoing as Dh is. He has worked in bars, as a bouncer, other security jobs and such so is used to the public being dicks occasionally. But quieter people, it must be hell for really.

Annabesque · 01/08/2020 15:05

Our local supermarket are refusing to let people in without a mask regardless of exemption, however yesterday there was a huge group of teenage boys in there with no masks and they were allowed in.

Staplemaple · 01/08/2020 15:09

Ah casual discrimination, lovely jubly

Purplepie78 · 01/08/2020 15:10

I went shopping yesterday but hardly anyone had one on.

Passmethecrisps · 01/08/2020 15:16

Our local Morrisons has a big table of hand sanitizer, trolley spray and masks to take before you enter. Someone greets you at the door and sort of waves towards the table.

I haven’t seen a single adult not wearing one in a shop - I would defo feel weird without mine on

Lunar567 · 01/08/2020 15:50

I was driving through a local high street this morning. On one side of the street there are 2 small supermarkets, everyone is wearing mask in them. On the other side there are 2 cafés, a few tables next to each other and many people sitting. No masks.
Why is there a risk of getting infected in a supermarket but not a café?
These mask wearing rules don't make any sense. WHO don't recommend mask for general population.
I don't wear any face covering anywhere.

You can't eat and drink with a mask on. Surely that's obvious?

As I said if you're being socially irresponsible by not wearing a face covering I think you should stay at home.

OldQueen1969 · 01/08/2020 16:09

I'm remembering 99% of the time and haven't had any problems so far, but bugger me, I've had some near misses with dangly ear-rings, long hair, and bag straps becoming obstructive trying to put my mask back on if I'm out and I've only got one hand free etc - mine's a fabric one with adjustable thingys on the elastics and I nearly took someones eye out the other day when I got it round one ear, the slider moved and it sort of pinged away with a life of its own.

DP is a body piercer. I'm considering a couple of cheek piercings (when they are allowed) for rings I can clip the thing onto with those little spring clips..... (only half joking).

Burnthurst187 · 01/08/2020 16:10

Didn't you notice other ppl wearing them?

Littlescottiedog · 01/08/2020 16:10

I saw a woman in a big Sainsbury's yesterday with no mask putting something in her basket. Fair enough, could be exempt. Then she turned to walk away and pulled the shirt sleeve of her sundress up to cover her nose and mouth, and held it there as she went.

I was mystified as to why, if she forgot her mask, she didn't just walk around normally. One, no-one would know. Two, half covering your mouth and nose with one thin layer of cotton is going to be as effective as if you had nothing over your face (unless coughing or sneezing). She drew more attention by trying to act like she was covering her face.

Try putting one on and taking it off again with hearing aids. I keep getting the elastic caught round and it pulls the aid off my ear when I remove the mask, but the ear mould remains in my ear so it ends up dangling. So I'm there fiddling with the thing trying to get the elastic off that's wrapped around the convenient curve of tubing. Plus I have the hair and earrings and glasses and stuff to contend with! Nightmare!
Noextremes2017 · 01/08/2020 16:23

We were told for months that wearing masks makes absolutely no difference.
Then the same people said we must all wear masks.
They call themselves scientists and experts. The reality is they have not got a **ing clue what they are talking about. They are making it all up as they go along.
They all need to go back where they came from - academic obscurity.

Lunar567 · 01/08/2020 16:26

@ilovesooty
My point was that it was not dangerous to sit near strangers without a mask and eat but it is dangerous to pass by strangers at a supermarket.
I have no simptoms, don't cough or sneeze on people so I am not a risk to anyone like I was not a risk before the 25th of July.
