In my own little world.
Mask in bag.
Walked in.
Noticed a few funny looks.
Went to the salad counter.
Girl behind is looking at me funny.
It took me 10 mins to realise I didn't have my mask on my bloody face.
Has anyone else forgot yet ?
Or am I just totally useless

@Marriedtoapenguin

You won't be the first, you won't be the last. I've had to turn around and walk home to get one a couple of times already.

You are unlikely to be the problem. It's the nutter I saw in my local shop yesterday who was loudly slagging off the masks and ended with "WELL I'M NOT WEARING ONE PERIOD!" whilst her daughter (about 12) died slowly inside. People like her are the issue and it's why no matter what the powers that be do, things won't clear up quickly.

This ^

Nobody can blame you, OP for forgetting. I almost did last night when I went to Lidl. I've put a handful in my glovebox. The trick now is for my brain to remember to take out and put on.

Staplemaple · 31/07/2020 13:53

Agree you won't be the first or the last!

Livelovebehappy · 31/07/2020 13:56

I wouldn’t worry. You’re not on your own. Weirdly more people seem to be exempt than not exempt, hence part of the reason why we’re now back into lockdown in parts of the country. And yes, I will judge people not wearing masks as I sense that a lot of people who don’t use it as a badge of honour with no reason for not wearing one.

StatisticalSense · 31/07/2020 14:04

And this is why it makes sense to have someone on the door politely reminding people that masks should be worn and either giving out or selling masks at a reasonable price. People cannot be expected to suddenly and reliably remember to add an additional step into a process that they have done regularly for years and hasn't required such a step to be taken (just look at the number of people who continue to write the wrong year in January despite knowing the year has changed). When doing something familiar the human brain has a tendency to almost go into a form of autopilot and it can be difficult to get out of such autopilot to add in an additional step or change something. This is simply human nature and isn't something that people should be criticised for or expected to change but does mean that polite prompting can be highly beneficial in getting people to follow the rules.

vanillandhoney · 31/07/2020 14:05

Ah, don't worry - you won't be the first and you certainly won't be the last!

justasking111 · 31/07/2020 14:08

I forget my credit card, used it to book a zoo trip so arrived at co-op shopped then quelle embarrassment luckily had cash in my purse.

Xenia · 31/07/2020 14:10

I just too my cardigan off yesterday in a petrol station and put it round my face - made a face covering in about 2 seconds

GlummyMcGlummerson · 31/07/2020 14:10

It's really not that stupid and I'm sure you didn't get funny looks! Plenty of people are unable to wear masks for medical reasons and I should hope assistants aren't giving them funny looks

Apolloanddaphne · 31/07/2020 14:10

I forgot going into a shoe shop last week. The assistant just laughed when I saw her wearing one and I suddenly realised. She said loads of people completely forget and are mortified when they realise. It is a new habit and it will take a while to get used to it.

SepticTankYank · 31/07/2020 14:13

I leave mine in my car because I forget until I drive up to the shop! We went to the shop as a family yesterday and I was the only one covered. Dd is going enough that she doesn't have to but I normally make her anyway and DP was mortified.

glueandstick · 31/07/2020 14:14

Dead proud when I went out.
Keys, phone, handbag, sanitiser, mask, reusable water bottle, wipes.

Bought petrol.

Hadn’t put my fucking cards in my bag. Thankfully they let me cancel the transaction at the pump and pay inside as they’d accept Apple Pay.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 31/07/2020 14:15

Don't worry, you are not alone - I have just had to go and pick something up in Central London (from my outer suburb) by overground train and tube and bus. On the tube train and the tube platforms on my back, I counted 12 (young) people - not together - who were either were wearing a mask round their necks only or had none at all and I do not believe they all had legitimate health reasons for not wearing one. There are endless announcements and someone told me the TFL staff won't challenge maskless passengers, presumably because they don't want to get assaulted. I probably passed lots more but I stopped counting after a while. I feel the next London spike is inevitable now. At least you intended to wear your mask but simply forgot to put it on.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 31/07/2020 14:15

*my way back"

SepticTankYank · 31/07/2020 14:15

The only other person I've seen not wearing them picked me out in the queue in little tesco to ask if we have to wear them now. I asked if he had been living under a rock. He said he works for the NHS and they don't have to wear them so didn't think we would have to. I think he was full of shit and making excuses. He said he was doing a nursing degree and was then going to get a doctorate.

BruceAndNosh · 31/07/2020 14:20

@TinyMetalBirds

Dh forgot to put one on when he was paying for petrol, because he wasn't thinking "shop", nobody said anything and if they looked at him funny he didn't notice!
I did the same!

I now have a spare folded up inside my purse

Yellowbutterfly1 · 31/07/2020 14:23

Nobody should have been giving you any funny looks. It’s nobody’s business if you have a mask on or not, they don’t know if you are exempt or not.

DGRossetti · 31/07/2020 14:26

Should have gone to the ASDA near me ... about 1 in 3 not wearing masks to absolutely no reaction.

lilgreen · 31/07/2020 14:27

I have one in the car and every bag. Wanted to pop to the Co-op yesterday after a dog walk but no mask. Grrr. Hi

S1987x · 31/07/2020 14:27

Dont worry about it. Try living in east London, no masks being worn round here! I feel like the odd one out going into the shops I am always the only one ever wearing anything

Flowers009 · 31/07/2020 14:27

I'm calling the police. You must be on most wanted by now

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 31/07/2020 14:27

So easily done. It occurred to me the other day that it was a surreal normal when I was packing my handbag with basics going, “Wallet, phone, keys, tampons, hand sanitizer, masks....”

480Widdio · 31/07/2020 14:30

I won’t forget,had a front toooth out this week,I look horrendous,so delighted to wear a mask.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 31/07/2020 14:35

Thanks to this I just went to retrieve mom from the clean washing to put in my bag for tomorrow. Couldn't find it anywhere... Just found it inside my duvet cover...which was three washes later! So I'm guessing it's now very clean after multiple trips in the washing machine.

lilgreen · 31/07/2020 14:38

@S1987x that’s terrible. I haven’t seen anyone NOT wearing one! Been Aldi and Morrison’s a few times.

Winebottle · 31/07/2020 14:39

I've done it a few times. I did it twice when it first came in and only remembered after I came out of the shop. I remembered at the entrance to the shop once but went in without because I had walked all the way there. I've had to go back to my car 3/4 times for it as well.
