Baby with pierced ears

mrsbeeton999 · 31/07/2020 11:16

School mum friend had baby in April and I’ve just noticed she’s had her ears pierced. Scrolling back through her Facebook they were pierced at beginning of July when piercing was still not open. This is seriously bad isn’t it? I’m a bit judgy about babies with pierced ears anyway so this might be clouding my opinion but having a new babies ears pierced illegally during a pandemic has really annoyed me

I don't agree with children being pierced at all until they can give consent.

But aside from that it's stupid to get it done at the moment during the pandemic and when risk of infection could mean a trip to a medical facility for treatment putting staff at risk over something cosmetic. She could have waited a while, or ideally let her child make her own choice.

mylittleyumyum · 31/07/2020 11:37

what do you hope to gain from this?

Fishfingersandwichplease · 31/07/2020 11:38

Ugh judge away - can't bear earrings in babies - l know in some cultures it is the norm but it makes my skin crawl. Especially during a global pandemic when you couldn't even get a haircut.

WorraLiberty · 31/07/2020 11:39

@mylittleyumyum

what do you hope to gain from this?
That was going to be my question Grin

It's not like anyone's going to say having a new babies ears pierced illegally during a pandemic, was a fantastic bit of parenting.

FilthyforFirth · 31/07/2020 11:39

I am massively judgey about babies with pierced ears so completely agree with you. Be preapred for the 'your baby your choice' brigade who think their children are possessions and cant possibly wait to pierce ears until said child has asked for it..

WorraLiberty · 31/07/2020 11:40

*Baby's

TeaStory · 31/07/2020 11:42

Either a piercing shop was open illegally or she did it herself...

makingmammaries · 31/07/2020 11:43

It should be illegal IMO along with cutting bits off babies’ genitalia for anything other than medical reasons. All the things you can’t do to dogs these days, but for some reason can still do to babies.

magicfarawaytrees · 31/07/2020 11:44

'What do you want to gain from this'- in fairness you could say this with most things posted on here.

And yes it's absolutely gross and should be illegal. We've just been socially conditioned to accept it even if we don't like it.

Devlesko · 31/07/2020 11:47

Can you not just read the replies from the last thread a few days ago.
YABU, it's none of your business.

welcometohell · 31/07/2020 11:50

YANBU. Covid aside, anyone who would intentionally inflict pain on their baby for the sake of their own vanity should refrain from having children and just get a doll instead.

DioneTheDiabolist · 31/07/2020 11:52

Next time you see her, call her a child abuser and then never speak to her again OP. That should learn her.Hmm

workhomesleeprepeat · 31/07/2020 11:56

I think you want a thread where everyone piles on and says things like 'yes babies earrings are terrible, disgustiiiinggg'

But people are going to do what they're going to do. Drop her as a friend if you wish, its a free country. Am fairly sure she probably won't care Grin

liklypaddy · 31/07/2020 11:57

Why the fuck would anyone pierce their baby's ears?!! Can't understand it myself.

Greenmarmalade · 31/07/2020 12:01

Does it really matter? No.

My grandad offered to do mine (he’s a doctor) with a needle and ice so maybe they did it at home. I’ve heard they do it in hospitals in some countries (can’t remember where).

RedRumTheHorse · 31/07/2020 12:01

Are you aware that it is very easy to pierce your own ears?

This means it would be even easier to pierce someone else's?

I have pierced my own ears, and have friends who had one of their own parents pierce theirs as babies and children.

melj1213 · 31/07/2020 12:03

How do you know it was done illegally?

My dd was born in Spain and it is perfectly normal to pierce babies ears - some are done by a medical professional before they are even discharged from hospital, though it is usual to wait till the baby is at least 3 months old - so people dont take their infant to a commercial piercer, it is done by a family member.

Whether or not you agree with it, you dont know it was done illegally.

HagridsBackTeeth · 31/07/2020 12:04

I don't agree with piercing babies in general
But can't get too het up about it really.

Beebee1115 · 31/07/2020 12:10

Getting a baby ears pierced covid or not is wrong imo. I once seen a post that ear piercing babies is no different to vaccinations - of course it is! Vaccinations are vital, ear piercings are not and just for vanity. Can look tacky imo.

FourPerDozen · 31/07/2020 12:11

I was going to say the same as pp. Moral standpoint aside, you have no idea it was done illegally. It’s very, very easy to pierce ears at home with a sterilised needle and ice.

RadicalFern · 31/07/2020 12:14

Wow. I wouldn't pierce my baby's ears, but I wouldn't compare it to FGM either...

fuckinghellapeacock · 31/07/2020 12:17

Mine were done at home by my dad with a gold needle when I was 2 weeks old. You have no idea who did the piercing.
Parents make all sorts of decisions for their babies - vaccinations, childcare, schooling, food choice etc. This is just another of those choices, albeit one I would not make.

vikingwife · 31/07/2020 12:19

It’s not something I would do, but it was quite common in the 80s and can also be cultural - am sure she will get side eyes & judgements for it. Possibly she knows someone who has a piercing gun or a professional piercer?

I’m not in your country so unable to comment on shops being closed etc. even at the height of our lockdown chemists remained open, where you would usually go to get a gun piercing - you’d think that was risky to allow during lockdown though !

Maybe ask her where she got them done?

fuckinghellapeacock · 31/07/2020 12:21

All of those saying "Why would ANYONE EVER do this?" - do you understand that my family have asked me why English mothers

  • give their child an odd name that means nothing and is the same as so many other children
  • do not vaccinate when it is free and available (it is not in their home country)
  • eat junk foods when it makes people so fat
  • work and leave dc in childcare - seen as very damaging and harshly judged
  • allow children to walk around partially dressed and with unbrushed hair etc - like a beggar

I do not agree with this but it seems beyond the comprehension of the average English woman that a lot of people do not think their child rearing is the best!

I think you need to come off Facebook for a while
