Three questions:

  1. what is the series called?
  2. what genre is it?
  3. how did it make you feel?

Just bought a spin bike and am planning on watching an episode a night and exercising at the same time. Need some suggestions. I'm open to anything!

OP posts:

@Paintingtheroseswhite

Outlander on Amazon Prime

Historical/Time travel drama set in Jacobite Rebellion Scotland

Beautifully shot with strong female central character and ahem, some very sensual scenes.

I also admit I have a huge crush on Jamie Fraser (fetches fan)

And some of the most beautiful costumes I've ever seen.

Below Deck on Amazon Prime/Hayu.

It’s a documentary type programme about crew life on a luxury yacht - loads of series in amazing locations and it’s addictive. Makes us want to go on holiday (in fact, have just booked a week in Croatia after watching the Mediterranean series Grin and planning a trip to Thailand next after seeing that on Below Deck too!)

It’s honestly better than sex - DP and I will deliberate about whether we can watch one more episode and still squeeze in sex before bed. Sometimes the extra episode wins Grin

Also love love love This is Us on Amazon. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, but lots of well rounded characters and I love how the stories all weave together. I cry at literally episode, but not always from sadness, it’s just a lovely portrayal of a family with all their flaws and quirks.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 04/08/2020 22:52

Couple mentioned on here that I’ve watched with the kids too - Stath Let’s Flats - literally the only thing they all love and it’s hilarious. And The Durrells which I watch with DD. Beautiful and really well done. Makes me want to move to Corfu with my DCs and start a new life!

What we do in the shadows (Amazon Prime, series not the original film of same name).
Incompetent vampires, fricking hilarious

I’ve just finished rewatching Desperate Housewives.

Made me laugh & cry.

Love/hate relationship with most of the characters.

It’s fast moving, loads happens in each episode.

8 series was not enough!

exiledfromcornwall · 05/08/2020 11:55

Where did you get Desperate Housewives? Is it on one of the streaming services?

leiaskye · 05/08/2020 13:09

@exiledfromcornwall

I started watching it on Sky (not sure what channel), but it must have been removed from there as the last half a dozen were on Netflix.

notawittyname1954 · 05/08/2020 13:15

Giri/Haji
Japanese British crime
Some interesting characters in it. was gripping and different

Hamsham · 05/08/2020 13:24

Has anyone mentioned I May Destroy You on iPlayer?

The 1st episode I didn't particularly enjoy but was absolutely hooked from episode 2 - amazing!

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 05/08/2020 14:07

I did, somewhere far above, Hamsham. Grin I'm guilty of mentioning it at every possible opportunity - whether or not it's relevant.

It's rare for a TV series to begin at superb and improve exponentially with every succeeding episode. It's a masterpiece.

jessstan2 · 05/08/2020 14:50

Thanks for the heads up, I might dip into 'I may destroy you'; I didn't fancy it because it was advertised as a comedy but your posts have changed my mind.

CaveMum · 05/08/2020 15:13

@tinkerbellvspredator the second series of What We Do in the Shadows is on iPlayer at the moment.

OP I also highly recommend “Staged” which has been on BBC during lockdown - David Tennant & Michael Sheen, plus their wives, and a plethora of amazing guest stars (won’t spoil the surprise!) playing themselves trying to rehearse a play via Zoom. Each episode is only 20 mins long so easily bingeable in one night! All up on iPlayer and I think the best thing that’s been made during lockdown.

Hamsham · 05/08/2020 17:14

@PerditaProvokesEnmity Yes, a masterpiece! So powerful. Absolutely outstanding and I'm recommending it at every opportunity.

It wasn’t Netflix as I said before. Found desperate housewives on Prime.
VetOnCall · 05/08/2020 18:13

Catastrophe
Deeply darkly funny, I adore it. Even has Carrie Fisher being awesome.
It's available on All4.

Also liked...
Chernobyl
Grimm
The Crown
Derry Girls
This Is Us
What We Do In The Shadows
Vikings
After Life
Arrested Development
The Haunting of Hill House

If you want something 'reality', Top Chef is amazing. I'd never heard of it until moving to Canada, but I started watching it and then binge watched all (at the time) 15 seasons. My Mum is now watching it on Prime in the UK.

BKCRMP · 05/08/2020 18:31

@GinDaddyRedux

1) Hey Duggee 2) Factual/documentary 3) Mildly concerned about the tuition and parenting system in the UK that leads to a dog providing after school life-skill classes for disparate animal children
The episode called "The Mixtape Badge" has Duggee sending them up a chimney. I didn't notice, until LO said "Mummy, why are they going up a chimney? Can I go up a chimney?"

I still have no idea why they were going up the chimney.

I'm loving this thread for TV ideas.

follygirl · 05/08/2020 22:44

Big Little Lies

Based on a group of women in California who are involved in a murder. There have been 2 seasons, the first was the best but the second still good. The finale in season 1 was one of the best episodes I have ever seen.

If you like Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me is fab. Created by the same people.

Also enjoying Prison Break (why does everyone mention Wentworth Miller Grin, I have no idea). A Korean drama called My Holo Love about a woman who falls in love with an AI, stick with it, it's great.

Royal Pains is a cheesy medical drama, easy to watch. Katy Keene is a little bit too musical for me but also easy to watch. White Collar is great. Pose is fabulous, about the ballroom scene in New York in the 80s.
