Three questions:

  1. what is the series called?
  2. what genre is it?
  3. how did it make you feel?

Just bought a spin bike and am planning on watching an episode a night and exercising at the same time. Need some suggestions. I'm open to anything!

So agree about Detectorists. I think it is my favourite. It is very British, gently funny, poignant and a bit mystical in places. It makes me feel happy and wistful. I guess it’s genre is drama/comedy.

Also Buffy. Genre science fiction/horror, subverts the trope of the screaming blonde girl who needs rescuing, and is very varied and creative. And funny, with bits that are genuinely moving.

Lexx. Science fiction. It is dark, puerile and a bit different. Deeply flawed, but wonderful.

The Kingdom. I refer to the original Lars Von Trier series, made in monochrome, Danish with subtitles, not the Stephen King remake, which was good in itself, but not like this. Genre drama/horror, I think. Made me feel slightly uneasy and absorbed.

These last two were the ones I would set the alarm for, to get up at 3am to watch, every week. (Because I couldn’t,t set the video. Yes, that long ago)

I would add Twin Peaks, but David Lynch went off to do a film in the middle of series 2, and it showed. Also he got persuaded, against his better judgement to reveal Laura Palmer's killer too early. But the spooky feeling it engendered was really good.

Also Fleabag, (drama), which I've just binge rewatched and everyone knows how good it is; and Firefly, (SF) but you need to watch the film Serenity at the end, as it was cancelled too soon and they got the chance to make the film to round it off. As with Buffy, Joss Whedon has the ability to create ensemble casts with characters you really care about.

Damages is actually good even if a little old. Glen Close really makes the role her own.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/08/2020 15:53

It’s on the ITV hub, I think, @ChickenNugget86.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 04/08/2020 16:53

I can't scroll all the way back to check if it's been mentioned - all I can say is that I've lost the entirety of the past four days to Mad Men. Hmm Had never seen more than about twenty minutes of it before.

I'm only coming towards the end of Season 2. There are millions of Seasons. God help me if I need to do anything that doesn't involve Amazon Prime for the next month ...

Giggorata · 04/08/2020 16:56

Its not it's. Autocorrect is illiterate. Oh for an edit button......

CherryBlossomPink · 04/08/2020 16:58

Just started on Lucifer -loving it! First box set in some time where I’m staying up late to watch “just one more”

NoodleKT · 04/08/2020 17:07

@Motoko where did you find Fringe??? I watched the first season years ago and can't find it on demand now! :)

Series' we've binged recently:

Scorpion - Netflix - 4 seasons - crime/comedy - group of genius' work for Homeland Security to solve problems

Blacklist -Sky on Demand - one of the FBIs most wanted comes in and helps them capture 'blacklisters' - big criminals not yet on the FBIs radar

SWAT - police/crime drama - stars the actor that plays Derek Morgan in Criminal Minds

Biggest Loser Australia. Absolutely compulsive viewing which DH and I both love, even though we don’t watch reality tv.

Very overweight people in teams lose weight (absolutely loads) and transform their lives. Lots of challenges, competitive stuff along the way and people get voted off.

Looking forward to another couple of episodes tonight with crisps and wine but I think it would work perfectly whilst cycling.

areallthenamesusedup · 04/08/2020 17:12

@Nosuchluck

Amazon Prime, I watched a lot of foreign stuff during lockdown, I'm almost fluent in many languages!! My Brilliant Friend (Italian on Sky) is well brilliant.

I've just watched 'Undercover' (Netflix) with Sophie Okonedo and Adrian Lester; six episodes.

It was certainly bingeworthy! Very well acted.

5lilducks · 04/08/2020 17:31

The Killing (Danish TV series)
Breaking Bad
Fleabag

TimeIhadaNameChange · 04/08/2020 17:35

@GinDaddyRedux

1) Hey Duggee 2) Factual/documentary 3) Mildly concerned about the tuition and parenting system in the UK that leads to a dog providing after school life-skill classes for disparate animal children
🤣🤣🤣
wishfull888 · 04/08/2020 17:42

Ozark on Netflix.
Jason Bateman father of 2 becomes embroiled in money laundering for the cartel.
Made me feel on edge waiting for next episode to load, it's funny & moving in parts. How far would you go to secure your family's future?!
One of the best series found recently & we've done 90% of the above 👆🏻!

Motoko · 04/08/2020 18:08

@NoodleKT We had the DVDs.

DarkMintChocolate · 04/08/2020 18:21
  1. Car Share
  2. Comedy
  3. It makes us laugh every time
Faith50 · 04/08/2020 18:22

Winter Sun - Turkish series about a man who was brought up by a poor family after a car accident and later discovers he was actually born into a wealthy family. Lots of drama.

Intersection - another Turkish series about a married doctor who becomes entangled with a wealthy business man.

Grand Hotel - Spanish series about the secrets and dramas of the family who own a hotel. I was hooked from the first episode!

I suggest using subtitles rather than setting to English dubbing as it is so much more authentic.

English series:
The Line of Duty
Dr Foster
Happy Valley
The Split 1 and 2

uglyface · 04/08/2020 18:31

These have probably been suggested but my vote goes to Outlander and Poldark. Both historical drama, but very well done. Complete escapism, not exactly groundbreaking stuff in terms of plot/dialogue/acting but they both hook you in and get you invested in the characters.

FairfaxAikman · 04/08/2020 18:38

Charitè on Netflix - it's like a German version of the Casualty 1900 series.

I love historical dramas with grains of truth - Casualty 1906/07/09 were based on records of the London Hospital, Charitè is based on its German counterpart.

I loved the insight into early medical advances.

Bella2020 · 04/08/2020 18:41

A Place To Call Home.

It's an epic family drama, 6 series, set in 1950s rural Australia; post-WW2 issues, social change, love & loss etc. I loved every minute. The characters absolutely drew me in. I'm always interested to learn about the 30s through to the 60s period, so this was right up my alley.

Nanny0gg · 04/08/2020 18:49

@YeahWhatevver

The West Wing

American political drama (not too heavy though)

Totally invested in the characters and storyline, desperate for the next episode

And gutted that Sky has finally stopped showing it.
CoffeeandCroissant · 04/08/2020 19:00

Seven Seconds
Undercover
Unbelievable
The Forest
Caliphate
Quicksand
Nobel
Eyewitness
Narcos
(all on Netflix)

The Disappearance
(iplayer)

Before we die (First season only, second season was ridiculous, although first season went a bit downhill in the last couple of episodes, still good overall).
(4OD app)

All time classics:

The Wire
The Bridge
The Killing
Spiral
Breaking Bad
Gomorrah

Acrasia · 04/08/2020 19:01

I’m not sure This Is Us is a good accompaniment to a spin bike session. I have never managed to make it through an entire episode without bawling my eyes out! Definitely worth watching though.
