So agree about Detectorists. I think it is my favourite. It is very British, gently funny, poignant and a bit mystical in places. It makes me feel happy and wistful. I guess it’s genre is drama/comedy.
Also Buffy. Genre science fiction/horror, subverts the trope of the screaming blonde girl who needs rescuing, and is very varied and creative. And funny, with bits that are genuinely moving.
Lexx. Science fiction. It is dark, puerile and a bit different. Deeply flawed, but wonderful.
The Kingdom. I refer to the original Lars Von Trier series, made in monochrome, Danish with subtitles, not the Stephen King remake, which was good in itself, but not like this. Genre drama/horror, I think. Made me feel slightly uneasy and absorbed.
These last two were the ones I would set the alarm for, to get up at 3am to watch, every week. (Because I couldn’t,t set the video. Yes, that long ago)
I would add Twin Peaks, but David Lynch went off to do a film in the middle of series 2, and it showed. Also he got persuaded, against his better judgement to reveal Laura Palmer's killer too early. But the spooky feeling it engendered was really good.
Also Fleabag, (drama), which I've just binge rewatched and everyone knows how good it is; and Firefly, (SF) but you need to watch the film Serenity at the end, as it was cancelled too soon and they got the chance to make the film to round it off. As with Buffy, Joss Whedon has the ability to create ensemble casts with characters you really care about.
