AIBU to think it’s not me who’s ‘odd’

Apparently (according to bf) I’m odd, out of touch and not like “most people” because I think Sunday roast lunch as a regular standard default family event is normal and that about now is the time to start firming up Christmas plans in terms of guests etc.

Bf says he knows no one who regularly has a Sunday roast lunch or anyone who thinks about Christmas “this early”. He thinks this is because I come from a “backward” part of the country 🙄

I am genuinely confused because literally everyone I know (bf and his family aside) would have a roast Sunday lunch (not set in stone, other things may happen instead ie days out, bbq in the summer etc) and everyone I know either has, or nearly has, their Christmas plans settled. When I say ‘everyone’ I mean my whole family, my EXH whole family (going by knowing them for 20 years) and all my friends.

AIBU for thinking it’s not me who’s the ‘odd’ one?

We have a roast most Sundays but not every Sunday.

I start saving for xmas in January and making plans for who is coming around now so I can budget for how much I need to spend on food - for us Christmas doesn’t happen overnight (although I’m sure hubby thinks santa literally sorts it all out xmas Eve)

So no you are not odd

Chig · 29/07/2020 18:42

We have a roast every Sunday. DH works all week , and misses the DC, they will normally be asleep when he gets back. Sunday lunch is our time to sit around the table and catch up. We all look forward to it. I start thinking about Christmas in November.

Crankley · 29/07/2020 18:42

I'm with you OP - I have roast on Sundays, cold on Mondays.

Lottielouc · 29/07/2020 18:47

We have more roasts dinners in the winter (on a Sunday) and yes we would invite mum and weather permitting have a bbq instead and would invite friends/family.

We have discussed Christmas between us but not asked anyone yet, we’ll wait until at least August! 😂
My sister in law will not discuss Christmas this earlier because she hasn’t had her birthday and then when we do discuss it she’s fully booked! 🤨 they’re clearly from a ‘backward part of the world!’ 😂

But with covid19 goodness know what we’ll be doing!

Cheetahfajita · 29/07/2020 18:47

Definitely strange. I'm guessing you're from Norfolk?

Ex mil was like that too.

Auckland11 · 29/07/2020 18:50

How random that someone who said they live in scotland had never heard of a sunday roast till they moved to england. Im also from scotland(near edinburgh) and have literally had a roast every sunday growing up, even though now i have my own place i dont have one often but i think people are weird for saying that its strange that people have them, everyone is different.

LeakyShip · 29/07/2020 18:51

I love a roast but my teenagers (grown ups officially) pretty much grabbed their food and ran so I gave up. I know lots of people who do though.
And I Asked teens already to spend Christmas with me this year as grandparents and family gatherings will most likely be out the window this Christmas so I want their company. So I don’t think you’re strange at all.

kennycat · 29/07/2020 18:52

We often have a roast for evening meal on Sunday so we can do our days out or whatever and still have a roast.
I’d live to have one every Sunday lunchtime but I also (especially in warmer months) like going out for family days. Our way you get both!

Comtesse · 29/07/2020 18:54

Sunday roast is great. Could be lunch or dinner though. Not odd.

Organising Christmas now is reasonable if there is international travel, but over the top if you’re all relatively local. Not odd for international, bit odd for local family.

ineedaholidaynow · 29/07/2020 19:08

I would have thought risky organising international travel for 5 months time seeing what has happened in Spain.

justlliloleme · 29/07/2020 19:09

We never have a roast on a Sunday & whilst I start shopping for Xmas presents early, no arrangements will be made till early to mid December

Drivingdownthe101 · 29/07/2020 19:10

Yes it’s risky, but some are prepared to take a risk. My in laws live in Spain and were due to visit next week, but obviously can’t now. They’ve rearranged for October half term, and have also booked (today!) to come over at Christmas. If they can’t come for whatever reason, they’ll rearrange again.
Purplequalitystreet · 29/07/2020 19:14

I wouldn't say odd. We don't have a roast every sunday but I would say maybe once a month. My in laws have a roast every sunday though.

I started making Christmas plans a few weeks ago. This is partly because this is the first time I won't be going to my mum's house in 35 years, so I wanted to get her used to the idea early. Also I want to start shopping soon, partly in case there's another lockdown and partly to spread the cost. I have booked tickets for a Christmas event at a local NT place, which was nearly sold out so clearly we're not the only ones thinking about Christmas!

Theorangeorange · 29/07/2020 19:20

We have a roast every Sunday though I haven't started thinking about Christmas, have booked a few days away for NYE if that counts...
I'm Welsh so perhaps from what your cosmopolitan bf would describe as from a 'backwards' area op! Wink

ChockyBicky · 29/07/2020 19:20

I haven't read the whole thread as it's too long but I'm assuming by backwards part of the country you mean here in the west.
I do occasionally have a roast on Sunday (usually pub) but Christmas in July? Nooo Christmas shopping starts in December in this house and I don't give it any thought until then.

linsey2581 · 29/07/2020 19:29

I’ve never done Sunday roast or a fancy meal on a Sunday. It’s just another day for us. We have however thought about Christmas as there is 14 of us for Christmas this year we need to book something pronto. Will be booking Christmas meal in the next few weeks. We always book Christmas in July/August

puddleduckmummy · 29/07/2020 19:33

We have a roast most sundays as sometimes it’s the only proper time to all eat and be together. Bit early to be thinking about Christmas though

Tunnocks34 · 29/07/2020 19:38

I have a Sunday dinner every week - or I did pre covid where we’d eat at my grandparents and the whole family went - not always a roast though!

No to Christmas though!

StuckInATent · 29/07/2020 19:39

Ha... everyone seems odd to other people in some way... no I wouldn’t do either of these things but have friends who do... those choices would probably be the least odd things we’d see in each other Smile....

TLBftm · 29/07/2020 19:47

Not odd at all IMO.
We have Sunday lunch every week, again give or take days out etc. It’s not even discussed, when I sort the weekly meal plan it’s just a given that that’s what we are having.

Christmas.... again, not odd at all. I’ve always been super organised with it and it absolutely pays off. We have already sorted what we doing/who we are seeing on and around Christmas, I have started buying for DS and have a list on the go for others so I have months to listen out for hints or things they like etc. My shopping will be done and wrapped by end of November then it means I get a stress free December full of Christmassy days out and no hustle and bustle in stores!

Tell your BF it’s called ‘organised’ not ‘odd’

oriel2013 · 29/07/2020 20:00

We live in quite a tourist-y place and far away from family so have started thinking about Christmas in terms of visitors who need to book accommodation, and which days that will leave to go and visit other relatives.

Roast dinners are an any day event here, usually every week but necessarily a Sunday

DreamTheMoors · 29/07/2020 20:19

Yank here. We celebrate Thanksgiving & Christmas (& Easter of course) together as an extended family.
For Thanksgiving, we have roast turkey. For Christmas, we have roast prime rib (rib of beef to you in the UK perhaps?).
It’s not something we think about in July because it’s tradition - just something we do every year, and something we look forward to.
Closer to the event, we’re more concerned about the number of people attending.

fdsct · 29/07/2020 20:36

I start Christmas planning January 1st ...🤷🏼‍♀️

randomer · 29/07/2020 20:56

Why?

RoseLillian · 29/07/2020 20:57

Op if making a roast every Sunday makes you happy then it really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Especially if it helps you feel more connected with your Mum.

My Dad used to do the best roasts. Mine (and anybody else’s) could never meet up to his standard imo. So I don’t bother. Plus I’m veggie these days. I do have lovely memories of sitting round a table all together enjoying his amazing cooking though.
