To report someone returning from Spain

Archie1989 · 27/07/2020 13:08

A friend of my partner has said he has no intention of isolating on his return from Spain. Should I anonymously report them? My mum was on the shielding list and it’s making me quite angry. People who went abroad would know the risks during all of this....and then to refuse to isolate shows such arrogance and disregard for others.

I don’t know this person well and I don’t want to make my partner feel stuck in the middle.

I think you should myob

FudgeBrownie2019 · 27/07/2020 13:12

Report them where? I'm not being obtuse - I honestly don't know where you'd report that.

In all honesty I think many people will do the same. Not because it's ok, but because they're worried about money/jobs etc and because throughout all of this, our Government have led us with wishy-washy nonsense rather than hard, immediate channeling of resources - several people I know are not taking it seriously and are citing the Government's own ineptitude as their reason. I wouldn't report someone. I would avoid them, I would advise them if they asked, but I don't see it as my duty to grass on people because of this.

MaxNormal · 27/07/2020 13:12

So they went abroad in good faith, got screwed by the rule change and now you want to grass them? Just mind your own business.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 27/07/2020 13:12

Yes with no hesitation. It’s to protect others who have no say in those that put them at risk.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 27/07/2020 13:13

Fudge, if they can afford a holiday abroad they can afford to quarantine. Money doesnt over rice the health and safety of others.

Archie1989 · 27/07/2020 13:15

@FudgeBrownie2019 to be honest, I agree...I don’t know where or how I’d actually go about it. We can say the government advice has been wishy washy....but it’s been pretty clear to say people should isolate on return from Spain. And people should know the risks after all of the deaths. This is a blatant disregard in my opinion, that puts others at risk

Who would you report them to?
This is the problem with all these new ‘rules’ - there are no laws to back them up

Afternoon11 · 27/07/2020 13:17

You would need some evidence to make it stick I suggest. So if you know they are going into their work as opposed to working from home. Any trip out of their house otherwise could be argued to be getting food, for example, which is effectively permitted.

MaxNormal · 27/07/2020 13:17

You know that Spain is huge and that most areas of Spain still have really low instances of infection, right?

You can seriously see how the Stasi flourished.

cologne4711 · 27/07/2020 13:17

Report to whom?

Anyway what they say and what they do may be quite different. You'd have to wait and see whether they actually do go out (and mix with others, as opposed to going for a run at 6am, which may not technically be allowed, but isn't going to spread the virus).

Archie1989 · 27/07/2020 13:18

@MaxNormal they went abroad in good faith? No! They went abroad knowing that there was a pandemic and that a second wave was feasible. They went abroad on holiday knowing that flights could be cancelled and that quarantine was a possibility

doodleygirl · 27/07/2020 13:19

Who would you report to and what do you think will happen?

Applepieco · 27/07/2020 13:20

Went abroad in good faith during a pandemic 🤣

DomDoesWotHeWants · 27/07/2020 13:20

Report them but I expect they'll think better of it and isolate as they should.

Lweji · 27/07/2020 13:20

It's not even happened yet, and you don't know how it will be enforced.

If you do witness her breaking any rules, then by all means report her then, to whoever you think you should.

But, tbh, I don't know that Spain is any more dangerous than the UK ATM. Grin

w0kingpizzaexpress · 27/07/2020 13:20

I'd report them but I've no idea who to

fiftiesmum · 27/07/2020 13:21

Some parts of Spain especially the islands have a much lower incidence than much of the UK so not actually putting anyone at greater risk.
Might be a risk of picking something up on the bus from the airport or the dash to Tesco on the way home

Molly500 · 27/07/2020 13:22

I wouldn't no.

Archie1989 · 27/07/2020 13:22

@doodleygirl I honestly don’t know to be honest. I think I’m just angry about it. People haven’t been able to go to funerals. My mum hasn’t been able to see her grandchildren...and someone is in such need of a holiday, they have to go, and then they can’t be bothered to isolate on return.

I think I’d want them to just get a warning from the COVID police (whoever they are) or something!

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss

A mate of mine recently went to Benidorm for £93. Flights and half board hotel. They couldn't necessarily afford 2 weeks unpaid leave.
Starbuggy · 27/07/2020 13:22

They went abroad knowing there was a global pandemic and that advice on travel and quarantine could change while they were away. They chose to take that risk and quarantining for 2 weeks when they return is the consequence. Why should they put everyone else at risk who hasn’t jetted off for a holiday?

MrsGradyOldLady · 27/07/2020 13:23

Why can't they just take a test like they would if they had been exposed to it in this country? I don't really understand why there's a need for a 14 day quarantine for people who've been abroad, but not for people who have been in contact with a confirmed case?

IamNotDarling · 27/07/2020 13:24

Yes there is legislation to enforce these quarantine rules in England - The Health Protection (Coronavirus, International Travel) (England) Regulations 2020.

Go to legislation.gov.uk and search coronavirus to find the relevant legislation for all nations of the UK.

The govt is relying on a mixture of requests in guidance and law.

Afternoon11 · 27/07/2020 13:24

The person could deny all knowledge of the conversation, and of course being on holiday has not looked at the news. Then claim the Dominic Cummings defence or use some other way to ensure no fine.
