To report someone returning from Spain

641 replies

Archie1989 · 27/07/2020 13:08

A friend of my partner has said he has no intention of isolating on his return from Spain. Should I anonymously report them? My mum was on the shielding list and it’s making me quite angry. People who went abroad would know the risks during all of this....and then to refuse to isolate shows such arrogance and disregard for others.

I don’t know this person well and I don’t want to make my partner feel stuck in the middle.

If it's a case of them not returning to work on their return for 14 days, their employer may make that decision for them. Nobody can enforce they remain in their house on return.

Afternoon11 · 27/07/2020 13:25

Your anger should be directed at the Prime Minister for not introducing restrictions on March 16th when SAGE recommended it.

fiftiesmum · 27/07/2020 13:26

Be interesting to see what the transport secretary does after his return from Spain - perhaps he may return via Barnard castle

Thislittlelady · 27/07/2020 13:26

Are they not being made to provide details of address and name etc on arrival? For spot checks and stuff? Maybe I’ve got this wrong but I think they are being logged as they enter the uk anyway ?..

Jakadaal · 27/07/2020 13:26

What would you want to happen as a result of reporting them?

Applepieco · 27/07/2020 13:26

Why can't they just take a test like they would if they had been exposed to it in this country? I don't really understand why there's a need for a 14 day quarantine for people who've been abroad, but not for people who have been in contact with a confirmed case?

Because the incubation period for Covid is 14 days?

HeckyPeck · 27/07/2020 13:26

If they are in work I would let their employer know so they can safeguard their other employees and anyone else they might come into contact with.

People saying mind your own business - what if the person is a carer or works with other vulnerable people. Would you really say nothing and let them risk other people’s lives?

GarlicSoup · 27/07/2020 13:26

@GrannyBags

Who would you report them to? This is the problem with all these new ‘rules’ - there are no laws to back them up
^ This absolutely.

Of course they should quarantine, but who exactly would you ‘report’ them to?

LakieLady · 27/07/2020 13:27

If I knew someone had gone back to work or was out and about socialising within 14 days of returning from Spain, I would report.

The rules are there for a reason. While they may have been in an area that's relatively unaffected atm, no-one knows how many people may be wandering around infected but asymptomatic, and how many more are incubating infection.

After all, only a few weeks ago Leicester etc didn't have a problem.

Alsohuman · 27/07/2020 13:27

@MaxNormal

You know that Spain is huge and that most areas of Spain still have really low instances of infection, right?

You can seriously see how the Stasi flourished.

Took the words right out of my mouth. If only people would just mind their own business.
AnneElliott · 27/07/2020 13:27

I think you need to wait until they actually come back before you think about reporting them. What if they're just sounding off?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 27/07/2020 13:27

someone is in such need of a holiday, they have to go what a simplistic/ jealous way of looking at the scenario. Spain wanted the tourism, and the money that British people spend. Sorry if you think the world should halt, people should lose their incomes to protect your family but in the real world it’s a balancing act and we have to start returning to normal.

Dr Google says it's a police matter.

Witchofzog · 27/07/2020 13:29

He went away when the government deemed it safe to do so and there was very little warning regarding quarantine. Yes he should isolate but it's nothing to do with you so no you don't report him

PhilCornwall1 · 27/07/2020 13:31

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss

Fudge, if they can afford a holiday abroad they can afford to quarantine. Money doesnt over rice the health and safety of others.
Ever heard of saving for holidays over a period of time? I earn pretty well, but there is no way we could afford to lose 2 weeks income, even worse if it's a joint income for two weeks.

The government changed this overnight, whilst not long ago saying it was ok to travel.

So this is the new lockdown reporting topic replacement now, along with face coverings/masks.

whiplashy · 27/07/2020 13:32

Report them to who?!

Legohead7 · 27/07/2020 13:33

And those who booked and paid for their holidays last year pre-pandemic? Those whose employment situation ahem changed because of the pandemic? Those who can't afford two weeks off unpaid because they're self-employed?

I can imagine there are plenty of people currently holidaying in Spain who won't be able to afford a fortnight off.

anon5000 · 27/07/2020 13:34

Fucking hell, why don't you report a few non mask wearers while you are at it.

You must be gutted that people are allowed out and about more now and you can't report people for going out more than once a day.

DarkDarkNight · 27/07/2020 13:35

So they went abroad in good faith, got screwed by the rule change and now you want to grass them? Just mind your own business.

No they went abroad during a pandemic knowing that spikes may happen. They didn’t have to go, they chose to. It’s extremely irresponsible of them not to quarantine.

FFS, are people this thick really??

Sorry, has WHO declared the pandemic over??

Is anyone in the UK doing any independent thinking/researching on this? MN is just bonkers some times.

As if you should trust the shower of shites running the UK. The PM who bragged about shaking hands and then caught Covid 🤦

Collaborate · 27/07/2020 13:37

@DaanSaaf

I think you should myob
It is OP's business. It's everyone's business to avoid a second wave and a second lock down because people are too fucking stupid and too fucking selfish to think that the rules apply to them.
DominaShantotto · 27/07/2020 13:37

I did advise uni of someone on my course returning from northern Italy when the Govt were just about to put into place them isolating for 14 days - but I did so because we were doing placements in care homes and I thought uni should be aware of that risk so they could make an informed judgement on if she went out on placement following the week she skived. If we hadn't been going into care homes with very frail elderly residents - wouldn't have bothered, but as we were I raised it quietly with the course staff so they were aware.

Plus she'd posted a million photos on social media and was bragging in lectures about how it was "lovely and quiet because of that corona thing" so it was not exactly some secret.

Alsohuman · 27/07/2020 13:38

@Legohead7

I know. It’s been like this since the middle of March. MN has always been a hotbed of avid “reporters” but they’ve gone completely over the top with Covid. You can see who were the tiresome kids at school who chorused “Miss, Miss....” at the merest infringement of a rule.
