To worry when 10yr DD went for an early run alone

My DD woke me early this morning saying she was going for a run and left. She kept to our road and was back in half hour. Is this ok? Just seems unusual behaviour? She hasn’t done this before and doesn’t run usually as a sport.

It’s not odd, I’d have died of embarrassment at 18 if I wasn’t allowed to have the freedom the the majority of other young adults are afforded, it’s just so so odd.

Bateshotel Maybe this thread will show you that it’s normal for teenagers to go out and not be cooped up until they are allowed to go to a local shop at 13.

Nicknacky · 27/07/2020 22:15

What age is year 12?

PablosHoney · 27/07/2020 22:15

Are you Mormons?

PablosHoney · 27/07/2020 22:16

Why not with friends? Well it just goes to show the different extremes out there is guess. I used to live near a horrible woman who let her 3 year old go to the park with his 5 year old brother, poor things

It’s great that they have siblings and cousins they get on with. Not all children do.

PablosHoney · 27/07/2020 22:23

I’m just fascinated 😊 So not religious 🤔 I’ll have to sleuth some more.

Nicknacky · 27/07/2020 22:23

Bateshotel You can dress it up as parenting styles if you want, but what you are doing is failing to instil independence, confidence and generally teenage lifestyle.

I cannot imagine treating my 13 year old and curtailing her adolescent years like you are.

And then you expect them to magically turn into adults with no training.

Strokethefurrywall · 27/07/2020 22:24

Wow, just finished this monster of a thread and now happy in the realization that MN is full of absolute headcases. WTF?

she might have been encouraged to start a regular running hobby to make it seem normal for her to leave the house and they will contact her another time when you are off your guard

This was my favorite, absolute gold! ... put down the tin foil hat and step away from the crime novels love!

lovelilies · 27/07/2020 22:24

I think my daughter was about 11 when she went through a phase of waking really early to go for walks alone, like 4 am but in summer so it was light already. But I knew about this, she had a phone and the dog

ktp100 · 27/07/2020 22:26

Too many opportunistic pervs around for me to be OK with this. I'm sure she's feeling frustrated if she's sporty and missing out on clubs etc but I wouldn't feel comfortable with it.

I'd ask my son to wait and let me come.

PablosHoney · 27/07/2020 22:26

I really thought I was on to something with Mormons 😄

Generallybewildered · 27/07/2020 22:28

My 11 year old goes for runs on her own. Probably not at 7:30 because she’s still emerging from her pit but a bit later. She occasionally runs with me but moans constantly so I’m happy she’s doing it at her own pace.
TBH I can’t remember when she started but it might have been before her 11th birthday. She started with “just around the block” to longer distances.

If only potential attackers gave you the option of a quick phone call first.

@ColdTattyWaitingForSummer

Gosh.. in my neighbourhood kids still play out from about primary 1 age! Now I sometimes wonder about the sense in that (they do have a habit of not being careful enough around cars) but certainly by age ten it wouldn’t cross my mind to be worried. It sounds like pp’s sporty dc just felt the need for some exercise (good for her!) she just needs to let op know in advance next time and maybe carry a phone.
When you said 'play out' I presumed you meant at the park with a parent. Where do they go with cars driving about in year one, without an adult?

Other than that, I tend to agree with most people that the child in question will be fine going for a run nearby, aged 10. It's ridiculous not to let kids go out with their friends in the evening though, that usually starts around 13 or 14 with one of the parents picking them up if necessary.

PablosHoney · 27/07/2020 22:32

Doesn’t play out mean play in the street outside your house

waterlego · 27/07/2020 22:33

So did I Pablo! That or JWs.
