To worry when 10yr DD went for an early run alone

My DD woke me early this morning saying she was going for a run and left. She kept to our road and was back in half hour. Is this ok? Just seems unusual behaviour? She hasn’t done this before and doesn’t run usually as a sport.

Bateshotel When you say going out with friends, what do you mean by that?

Don’t they have any friends outside extended family?

Bateshotel 17/18 before they can go to the cinema or bowling😳? My daughter has been doing that since she was 12!

By 18 I was at college 50 miles away, worked part time and had a boyfriend of three years.

Wow.

BreathlessCommotion · 27/07/2020 22:00

She's 10 not 4. My 10 year old goes out on his own for runs, walks, bike rides. I also walk the dog in the morning, on my own in very isolated places. It never crosses my mind to be worried.

MsTSwift · 27/07/2020 22:01

How do they hang out with their friends if not allowed to leave the house?

Gosh.. in my neighbourhood kids still play out from about primary 1 age! Now I sometimes wonder about the sense in that (they do have a habit of not being careful enough around cars) but certainly by age ten it wouldn’t cross my mind to be worried. It sounds like pp’s sporty dc just felt the need for some exercise (good for her!) she just needs to let op know in advance next time and maybe carry a phone.

PablosHoney · 27/07/2020 22:03

How far away is their school? And when you say going out 17-18 do you mean of an evening? So no going to a busy area until at least 6th form, wow! I’m not criticising, but it’s just very unusual to me. So they can’t catch a train to London with a friend until they are 16/17?? Sorry can’t get over it 😀

Nicknacky · 27/07/2020 22:04

Ah, so they aren’t invited because they know you will say no.

PablosHoney · 27/07/2020 22:05

Kids not being able to swim is odd but walking home in year 7 is nothing unusual.

Nicknacky · 27/07/2020 22:05

Bateshotel Why won’t you allow them to go to the cinema or bowling until they are 17/18?

Surely not 😱😂 I moved out when I was 16, not what I want for my children but you can’t infantilise a teenager like that, how embarrassing

MsTSwift · 27/07/2020 22:08

Wow my kids would be extremely unhappy on that regime! Don’t know anyone like that either tbh. My 14 year old enjoys bike rides, river swimming and going to thrift shops with her lovely friends and giggling in coffee shops. She would be so so sad if not allowed to do this. She plays sport too.

Wow at the fact anyone even tries to restrict what their 18 year old child dies and that they are just getting to go to the cinema for the first time. My 10 year old has been to the cinema with our 13 year old neighbour!

PablosHoney · 27/07/2020 22:10

How old is your eldest @Bateshotel

Nicknacky · 27/07/2020 22:11

Bateshotel But what’s the issue with them going bowling or to the cinema?

An 18 year isn’t a child, I’m sure we would have similarities but these rules are really difficult to get a head around 😊

Nicknacky · 27/07/2020 22:12

At 15 I was getting two buses to go and see my boyfriend who lived 15 miles away😂

waterlego · 27/07/2020 22:13

MsTs I was about to write something very similar. I also have a 14 year-old who has the freedom to meet friends in town/on the beach/at the park. I think it’s healthy, and I'm glad she has spaces and places she can go to expand her independence. We also have a 12 year old DS who goes out with friends to the skatepark or bike track.
