Would you be happy with the finding of this cake for £80

I ordered a graduation cake from a lady who I have used for years and all of the cakes have been beautiful which is why I've returned every time. However I picked up this yesterday and I'm a little disappointed in the size and finish compared to the picture I sent of how I would like it. I've messaged her to tell her I was a little disappointed with it but she hasn't replied so am I being unreasonable? She wasn't in when I picked it up she left it with her teen son to hand over so couldn't really say anything there and then.

This was my daughters 1st birthday cake. Cost me 180...she would have done one layer and slightly less detail for 80. That cake above is Shockingly bad.

£80?! I'm in the wrong game.

Thisismytimetoshine · 26/07/2020 18:08

That's a very nice looking cake, Breastfeedingworries, but £180 on a 1 year old's cake? Please tell me you didn't do a cake smash...

VettiyaIruken · 26/07/2020 18:08

Yeah, that's rubbish for £80

Breastfeedingworries · 26/07/2020 18:11

Thisismytimetoshine haha no cake smash. It was a big deal sort of party because my daughter shares a birthday with my mum. Although I’m tempted to get one for 2 it won’t be as lavish. Doubt I’ll be having big party this year 😢

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/07/2020 18:11

She is quite well known in the cake world, has written a book, made cakes for celebrities, used to have a shop on a trendy street in town

So why would someone like that make any cake for £80 (even though it's crap)?

Unless it was mate's rates of course, and even then a mess like that wouldn't be acceptable

Deardonkey · 26/07/2020 18:14

I would be really disappointed. Did you send her a picture of the cake she made you, I wonder (as others have already suggested) she outsourced it. It looks like an armature attempt of the one you asked for.

forfoxsakee · 26/07/2020 18:15

If something like that has happened and she owned up and offered me a discount or another cake I would have been ok with it. It's her dismissive attitude that I'm most upset with.

That cakes looks like an Instagram versus reality post. No way can she justify £80 for that!

Jeaniealogy · 26/07/2020 18:19

Professional cake maker here, on the side of my day job... that's really rough, I would have charged £55 but I'm not sure about the flowers... they look like real orchids, I would make them in wafer paper...real ones are grown with all sort of pesticides sprayed on them. What did it taste like ?

SuperlativeScrubs · 26/07/2020 18:23

I would reply questioning her on the 3 day old sponge underneath if that took her 3 days to ice???

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/07/2020 18:25

What was the cake like inside? I can’t believe she is a professional baker and works for celebs with that skill set.

hoxtonbabe · 26/07/2020 18:25

@forfoxsakee

I hear you. I think that’s what bothers me in all customer focussed professions. If you hold your hands up and say sorry and take something off or give a voucher, etc then I will still return ( last chance though) but to behave in a dismissive way is why they would never see me again. Did it taste nice though? Hopefully it at least tastes nice/isn’t dry?

I made this cake for a family member earlier in the year (for free), he loved it but I was so unhappy with it as I could see all the air bubbles that I couldn’t seem to prick out, certain things were not as straight as I’d have liked, the “rings” in the notepad wasn’t neat, the only thing I like was the “pen” BUT if that was for a paying customer I would have offered them money off.

Her cakes are usually amazing. If you looked at her previous cakes or her instagram or Facebook page you would never guess that cake had come from her.

I see lots of cakes with a finish like that, I thought it was just a style. I always said I couldn’t do it as people would just think it was messy rather than I had aimed for that finish

Livingoffcoffee · 26/07/2020 18:29

@forfoxsakee
Have you sent her a picture of the cake you sent vs the cake you got?

hoxtonbabe · 26/07/2020 18:29

@Jeaniealogy

I think it was mentioned upthread that whey were polyester flowers. I’m sure someone else will confirm if I was right or not, lol

Horehound · 26/07/2020 18:33

She's definitely gone for the rustic buttercream look but it does look pretty amateurish.
Definitely leave a poor review if she isn't even discussing it properly.

Thisismytimetoshine · 26/07/2020 18:36

Where do you see all these cakes? How could "rushed and unfinished" be a style?
GlamGiraffe · 26/07/2020 18:37

Dies she usually fo hervletteringvthe same way @forfoxsakee. If EVERYTHING is totally out of character for her style she just hasnt done if herself. Shes given the job to a friend/relative/child to flog either because she was busy or didnt want to do it, or had something else on and rushed it instead if saying not it hasnt been fone by her us be worried where it had come from from a hygiene perspective. I woikfnt be happy with a cake looking like that, it looks shoddy and homemade, it doesnt look like a cake that been bought from a professional at any price.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 26/07/2020 18:39

She is quite well known in the cake world, has written a book, made cakes for celebrities, used to have a shop on a trendy street in town. I'm not lying about her being a professional without outing her!

She definitely didn’t make that cake then. Must have palmed it off on another baker as she was busy.

Jeaniealogy · 26/07/2020 18:46

@hoxtonbabe sorry I skim read the thread but yes could well be poly flowers. The whole execution is amateurish. If I had charged 80 big ones it wouldn't have left my kitchen looking anything like that. If she is a so call celebrity baker why risk your reputation by selling that if it does not match the brief and looks like a 10yr old made it ? Don't get it...

hoxtonbabe · 26/07/2020 18:47

@Thisismytimetoshine

I think daisy is thinking about a naked cake which is supposed to look unfinished but clearly the OPs cake isn’t meant to be that..lol

MrsKin90 · 26/07/2020 18:48

I think I'd just put a review on her FB (but be polite) and include the pics you have here and that you were a bit disappointed with the finish. Nothing like an honest review to bring people down a peg when they clearly don't care at all about your experience.

whereorwhere · 26/07/2020 18:57

I wouldn't be happy - and I could get that for about forty quid
