To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

First it was "People will not wear them" and now it's "people will not keep wearing them"

Everyone got over it already. People are just wearing them.

MorningManiacMusic · 26/07/2020 23:18

@1950swallpaper
That would be because for about the last month it's not been obligatory to wear masks in closed spaces in Italy. Individual establishments decide how they want to act. You'll find some places ask you to wear a mask, others not. Same with bars, restaurants etc.

StripyHorse · 26/07/2020 23:30

My glasses steam up and I can't wait to get back to the car to take my mask off.... but that's hardly much to put up with.

I can't see the benefit of gloves being mandatory though... they only protect the wearer and I think the false sense of security means people keep them on and keep touching things, potentially spreading more germs than someone without gloves who is washing / sanitising hands regularly.

Pugwash2005 · 26/07/2020 23:32

I have to wear them in work and you do get used to them. I wear them whilst shopping here in wales even though we don’t need to. Practice a bit in the house first maybe it’s uncomfortable at first but you do get used to them eventually.

Flowers009 · 27/07/2020 00:09

I'm in Spain and here you have to wear one when going in shops ect I'm kind of use to it although it makes me so hot

BlackPetunia · 27/07/2020 00:11

Fast forward 18 months and there’s Throat cancer scares from all the breathed in chemicals and particles from these single use face masks from sweat shops in China

Do we know the health risks of manual work wearing a face covering breathing back in our own toxins?

Designerenvy · 27/07/2020 00:15

The person who said " why wear masks when we're so close" obviously doesn't get the reason for wearing them !

We wear them when we can't social distance in places like shops etc. I wear mine to protect you and you wear yours to protect me.

People who are not wearing them at this stage are being selfish and irresponsible ( apart from those exempt due to medical conditions)

Designerenvy · 27/07/2020 00:17

@BlackPetunia , healthcare workers wear them for 13 hours while on duty, I'm sure you can wear yours for 30 mins shopping ! Get a grip please !

BlackPetunia · 27/07/2020 00:24

@Designerenvy er...no ‘grip’ required

I work a 9-10 hour day in retail on the shopfloor thanks. 5 days a week. I’d appreciate the better grade masks healthcare workers have But we don’t have those .... a cloth one? Can you imagine the state of it at the end of the day

It’s not unreasonable to worry about unknown health issues off the back of this....do you think our government would care about that

Popc0rn · 27/07/2020 00:30

@BlackPetunia

If there were any health concerns like cancer from long term mask use, we would already know about it by now. Dentists, surgeons and operating theatre staff etc wear them for hours a day, for every day of their 40+ year working life.

I doubt wearing the general public having to wear one for less than an hour to do the weekly shop will be any different.

Designerenvy · 27/07/2020 00:31

@BlackPetunia , apologies, I'm just tired of people giving out about wearing masks for 30 mins at a time to get groceries etc.

Yes, wearing a cloth mask all day at work is not nice and not very hygienic I'd imagine .

BlackPetunia · 27/07/2020 00:45

@Popc0rn medical masks are superior to the cheap rubbish we have....other alternative is the cloth ones

I would have to wear it 8/9/10 hours not an hour to do a shop....

Vivana · 27/07/2020 00:52

I work in retail and didnt wear a mask for the whole of my shift today as were exempt whilst at work. No one said anything to me on why I was not wearing one.
I do wear one then when going into shops and found the disposable ones best for me and not to bad.

Braveheart101 · 27/07/2020 01:01

I am in Scotland. I wasn’t too bothered about the mask wearing (although I’m not making my five year old wear one).

Then today I was in the Overgate in Dundee and my toddler had a lie-on-the-floor tantrum. It was about 50 degrees and people were staring and the mask did not help my fluster.

Braveheart101 · 27/07/2020 01:03

I think for me though the most annoying thing is that I keep forgetting.

I got halfway to the corner shop the other day and had to turn back because I’d forgotten the damn thing. That happens frequently.

Braveheart101 · 27/07/2020 01:03

Also. The mask-nazis are worse than actual mask-wearing.

SecretSquirreI · 27/07/2020 01:05

Basically there's a bunch of idiots who have invented reasons they "can't" wear a mask.

Guess what. No one finds them comfortable. Just put up with it like the rest of us.

Why do I also get the feeling the mask refusers will be the ones moaning that a vaccine isn't safe either.

Popc0rn · 27/07/2020 01:08

@BlackPetunia

Right, okay, so you literally just said...

"Fast forward 18 months and there’s Throat cancer scares from all the breathed in chemicals and particles from these single use face masks from sweat shops in China"

...but you would rather to wear a medical/surgical mask (which is single use, made in sweat shops and made from various fibres) rather than a cotton one? Confusing.

"medical masks are superior to the cheap rubbish we have....other alternative is the cloth ones"

If they aren't cloth masks, then sounds like you actually already have medical/surgical mask at work? Can't think what else they could be.

Discobay · 27/07/2020 01:49

I’m in Hong Kong and been wearing one since the beginning of this, there is security at the front of every shop, you cannot go in unless you are wearing a mask and have your temperature taken. Bus drivers won’t let you on unless you are wearing one. When my kids went back to school for a few weeks they had to wear one all day long in 35° heat and they just got on with it. You get used to it. A tip I learnt at the beginning, don’t breathe through your mouth, only your nose.

Ineke · 27/07/2020 04:06

I will point out to anyone if they are not wearing their mask properly, ie, not covering the nose, or back to front, .If you are going to wear one, then wear it right. Think of others, not yourself.

Ineke · 27/07/2020 04:23

The fact that people are actually having this conversation is shameful, why is it so hard to wear a face mask for god's sake. Get a grip.... Wear a mask, do your bit to help protect each other..

DemolitionBarbie · 27/07/2020 04:32

If you think masks are bad, look up what it's like to be on a ventilator!

AlternativePerspective · 27/07/2020 04:41

I’ve been on both a ventilator and had to wear an oxygen mask and the people wining about having to wear one for an hour or so seriously need to get a grip.

No wonder people always say the Brits are a bunch of moaners.

Or perhaps people would prefer we go back into lockdown....

Figures are already rising judging by the infection rates this week, and it’s those who aren’t wearing masks who are responsible for that.

Limpshade · 27/07/2020 05:40

I haven't RTFT but masks have been mandatory where I live now since March and you DO get used to them. It takes a week or two, but you do. Saying you can't manage it after two hours (as one poster wrote) is feeble at best.

This quote from an amateur mask maker says it all: "Over here the same folk who normally won’t shut up about the ‘Dunkirk spirit’ and the sacrifices made by the war generation go to pieces when asked to wear a mask in a shop. So embarrassing."

Doryhunky · 27/07/2020 05:54

I have a few cloth masks. One is unlined and in a light material and much easier to wear.
