To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

I hate them but will wear one because it’s right and as someone said upthread there really may be something to be said for wearing them on flu season coronavirus or no.

HeIenaDove · 26/07/2020 20:50

Wrote this last night.

Not bad considering i havent done it for years.

Masks are a real drag
But its all about the price tag
Now you need to do your duty.
And shop for clothes and beauty.
Dont forget about shoes.
And stuff you possibly wont use.
And you can go to the pub
Eat lots of lovely grub.
With not a mask in sight.
You can party all night.
Drinkers getting a free pass
So they can drink and fall on their arse.
Had enough of this crap
Sick of being in this trap
Up to me if i dont shop
It doesnt mean you can have a pop.
Now i play the waiting game.
But you wont make me feel shame.
I WILL wear a mask
But suffering in it is too big an ask.

PablosHoney · 26/07/2020 20:52

Erm..

Bollss · 26/07/2020 20:55

If nurses can do it for 13 hours bla bla bla.

Wearing a mask as part of your profession is entirely different to having to wear one in your free time. For a lot of people, work is totally seperate to home. Home is a safe space. Home is comfy, and happy.

Now parts of home life have been made miserable.

And we're doing it for others. Others who call people names on the internet. Others who don't think disabilities matter. Others who talk about children as if they're plague spreading rats.

Excuse me if I don't particularly feel fond of the "protecting others" narrative right now because actually lots of others are total arseholes.

HeIenaDove · 26/07/2020 20:56

It clearly says i will wear a mask And i have been I masked up just before going into Tesco on Friday directly opposite three pubs where there was no social distancing going on , no masks, hugging arguing. And in and out like fiddlers elbows.

Melx42 · 26/07/2020 20:56

It’s to save people lives. Wear the mask it’s not that bad. I have to wear one 8 hours a day as work in the hospital. No one likes wearing a mask but it will save lives

mbosnz · 26/07/2020 20:57

Must be bloody awful being a medical professional having to wear a mask at work, and then in shops.

I'm lucky. I just have to wear 'em in shops. And on public transport. And I have a degree of choice as to how often I shop or go on public transport.

They only save lives if worn properly and used in conjunction with social distancing etc. Unfortunately I don't personally see a lot of that happening.

Incorrect mask use spreads germs too

BakewellTarts · 26/07/2020 20:59

I'm probably misreading the thread but i can't see that the majority of the replies have said that they won't wear as mask as required. Just that they don't like them and so will consider if its worth the discomfort of wearing one?

I know I will wear one for essential shopping. I am just defering leisure shopping. There are several discretionary spends (new car particularly ) that as a family we have decided to defer because the process involved is miserable. This is a valid choice and entirely within the rules.

BlackPetunia · 26/07/2020 21:01

@TrustTheGeneGenie yes, you've got a point

feel the same tbh. the arsehole customers who have abused us since day 1 of covid and continue to do so even today.....they are particularly vile to our young staff. mumsnetters dc!

vile behaviour that we haven't seen before, its worse than the norm for retail. people think we are back to normal and want to use our toilets (no!) and expect service...no,we dont want to get close to you to explain how something works.....just get it home and work it out!

BelleSausage · 26/07/2020 21:01

@TrustTheGeneGenie

Straight choice- wear a mask or be part of the reason why there is no full time school in Sept.

If I remember correctly from other threads you are highly invested in schools fully reopening in Sept. That can only happen if the R rate remains below 1.

It’s global pandemic. You’re going to have to pick a hill- masks or full time school?

HeIenaDove · 26/07/2020 21:01

@TrustTheGeneGenie I feel very similar. HA refused to come out to a neighbour last night so he had to call the fire brigade.

Neighbour had a leak through his kitchen light where they are doing the roofs. He phoned HA four times. I gave him the most recent no. for the contractor we have which was from late Feb (when they were originally going to do it) HA havent been out Neither has the contractor Vinci.

Tenants lives still being seen as disposable. Yet we are expected to wear masks to protect people who see us in this way.

You seem to have misunderstood what the masks are for.

I wear a mask to stop myself potentially passing the virus on to someone else. I wouldn’t initially know if I had it. Some people never get symptoms.

I wear a mask because I want to help reduce transmission. It’s something I’m doing for my community.

I also do it because I want to stop the NHS from collapsing this winter.[/quote]
I know perfectly well what masks are for. And social distancing - which hardly anyone bothers with any more. Masks will go the same way.

I do wear a mask. It doesn't mean I have to agree with it, or enjoy it or big myself up to strangers on the internet.

I won't go shopping for pleasure any more though.

I don't need to pick a hill because I'm following "the rules" so pipe down.

Also I don't think you understand how the R rate works if you think that's what school opening will be based on Smile

Wheresthebiffer2 · 26/07/2020 21:04

I don't like them , but wear it as instructed by the powers that be, because it's the right thing to do . It will mean I won't be browsing in any shops any time soon though . Just in and out for the minimum .

HeIenaDove · 26/07/2020 21:05

I do wear a mask too. The gaslighting here is scary Its all gone very Years and Years.

We are NOT refusing to wear a mask.

BelleSausage · 26/07/2020 21:06

GOOD GOD! Does no one understand.

Wear a mask and stop the NHS from falling over completely this winter. We will all be utterly fucked then.

People who want to go back to and keep a halfway normal life during the pandemic need to wear a mask. Good grief!

Find another childish way to stick it to the man. The bloody HA and your boss and the government give not two shits who dies and who lives. The only people you’ll be hurting is your friends and neighbours.

Yeah I give it two weeks. I'm avoiding shops because I don't want to wear a mask ... “

Disagree. I’m going to shops because people are wearing masks. One will cancel the other out.

Respiratory and anxiety issues exempted, it is so not a big deal.

Thankfully, most do seem to understand, in the real world.
First visited Japan 28 years ago, when everyone was wearing masks. They still do, it’s incredibly rude not to. The Covid death stats speak for themselves.
