To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

I was in a small shopping centre today and a woman very loudly was saying to her friends that she would wear one because she did not want to and then had to he gall to say that she wanted to be part of the pandemic.

Straycats · 26/07/2020 19:46

Went to Asda Friday evening in Feltham, approximately 40% of shoppers were not wearing face masks and yesterday went to B&Q and a few shoppers didn’t have masks on including myself. Did have a shopper ask me why I wasn’t wearing one, it took 3 attempts before I could understand what he was saying, I gave my reasons and he was fine with that, so we parted amicably.

ninjamummy · 26/07/2020 19:48

What’s the big deal ? Been wearing in Scotland for months now. Even before 10th July. Stops you shopping how you used to... makes you shop quicker and get out. Which is ideally what everyone should be doing anyway. Not the time for browsing or stopping to chat for ages.
A ventilator would be much more uncomfortable than a mask!!

Menora · 26/07/2020 19:48

I hate wearing them I feel so trapped. But I do wear one when I have to. I am going to just avoid shops where I can

BelleSausage · 26/07/2020 19:50

People in Britain are such babies. Grow up and do it without moaning.

Twonka · 26/07/2020 19:51

Suck it up!
People said this about seatbelts, now it’s a legal and safe requirement, you wouldn’t put your kids ina car without a seatbelt now would you??
remember That advert where the kid in back seat eating pizza killed the mum cos he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, well Maybe the one not wearing the mask will be the one killing others...?
Morbid but just saying....

Menora · 26/07/2020 19:52

I don’t understand why it’s an issue to say you don’t like wearing them. Surely no one does. But we are wearing them

ifeellikeanidiot · 26/07/2020 19:53

@asdfghjjkl

Strange that Spain has been wearing them for over 3 weeks and now they are on the quarantine list , they obviously don't work very well
Yes, cause that exactly how science works Hmm.

We have no idea just how big the recent outbreak in Spain would be if they hadn't introduced masks. I imagine most scientists would suggest it would be far, far bigger.

Wearing masks some of the time does not eliminate the virus. It just helps us limit the damage until we get a vaccine. It's not a black and white, all or nothing situation. The more people wear them, the more we can limit the spread.

Whattodonext2020 · 26/07/2020 19:54

Anyone seen the picture going around Facebook?
Cross section of a ventilated person and a picture of a mask saying that if you find wearing a face mask uncomfortable imagine how being ventilated feels. Gets the point across pretty well!

Ilovemypantry · 26/07/2020 19:58

@hopefulhalf

In England we will be wearing masks until May 2021
Where did you get that information from...source?
Ilovemypantry · 26/07/2020 20:05

@Spikeyball

"Don’t worry, a ventilator will help with that...."

The ventilator comment makes it easy to spot who the hard of thinking arseholes are.

No, the hard of thinking arseholes are those that are saying they won’t wear a mask because it’s their human right not to (obviously there will be some people who will be exempt for medical reasons).
PablosHoney · 26/07/2020 20:07

Nope, definitely it’s definitely the ventilator brigade that are not the brightest

PablosHoney · 26/07/2020 20:08

It’s such a stupid comparison, if you have got to that stage you are in a medicalised coma, how would you know if you were uncomfortable or not.

Alsohuman · 26/07/2020 20:08

Give it a few weeks and mask wearers will grow fewer and fewer. In exactly the same way that social distancing is going by the wayside - and mask wearers are the worst, they mistakenly think it makes them invincible.

OhTheRoses · 26/07/2020 20:18

It isn't one's human right not to wear a mask it's one's human obligation to do so. The science may or may not be right but if it helps make some people feel less anxious then it's worth it for the greater good.

I don't particularly like wearing one but if I put my specs on over the top they don't steam up. It's a bit disorientating but I shall get used to it and if not, I'll suck it up.

The Tu ones at £10 for three are more comfy than the Seasalter ones for £20 btw.

hopefulhalf · 26/07/2020 20:19

*hopefulhalf

No source just common sense. R0 is 1 or thereabouts, there is no vaccine, schools need to re-open. How can it possibly be any other way ?

Anushka · 26/07/2020 20:19

I dont think it's any coincidence we are asked to wear them just as people who have been shiedling are allowed out. I cannot imagine how hard it has been for them. I am wearing one in shops, why wouldn't I? It's not great but I prefer it to spending a whole shopping trip worrying and I'll do anything to prevent catching it or unknowingly pass it on. Let's be honest the last few months has been pretty rubbish anyway, this is the least part of rubbish of the whole thing!

sleepyblueocean · 26/07/2020 20:24

Ds would find a mask so uncomfortable he would rip the face off anyone foolish enough to try and pin him down and force one on him. I must find some way of telling him about ventilators as that will make all his disabilities go away and he will be able to wear a mask.

MeadowHay · 26/07/2020 20:26

@helenadove hi - I don't think they are aware of this as two of them don't have a social media presence at all (my two siblings) and DH only has a limited social media presence himself. But none of them would support it! They have all been very vocal about their opposition to people spying on each other and reporting neighbours to the police for spurious breaches of lockdown etc. Almost all of the staff in the hospital that they know where two of them work oppose the blanket imposition of facemasks on staff too, they hate it and think it a pointless gimmick. It has also drastically reduced attempts at social distancing between staff, presumably because they know they won't get told to isolate under contact tracing rules due to these surgical masks that apparently make you invincible to covid-19 hah. Hmm

HeIenaDove · 26/07/2020 20:36

Thanks @MeadowHay

Carriecakes80 · 26/07/2020 20:39

God there are a lot of precious petals on here aren't there eh? Same kind of folk who's parents moaned when Seatbelts came in??

These can help save a life, and seeing as I lost a very lovely 41 yr old friend who had just had a little girl, for the sake of that, for his bloody memory, I shall get on with it!
Maybe don't go bloody shopping every other day if its that much of a pain for you. I tell you what, you might have heard that an itubator shoved down your throat helping you to breathe might well be a tad more uncomfortable than a wee masky??

Its a bit of cloth, and if my 60 yr old Paramedic dad who has one lung due to a pulmonary embolism can wear throughout the day without a single whine, then I think you can manage. Oh, and my kids have all been wearing one since March as we realised a lot earlier than our thicky government that they might be useful for those who might carry the virus without suffering the actual hell of it...but then, I taught my kids early on in life to think of others and try to protect others...maybe other people should try to be a bit more like that.

Unbelievable.

mbosnz · 26/07/2020 20:41

I'm assuming that anyone that isn't wearing one, either can't, for various reasons that are not my business, or because they're an obnoxious arsehole who thinks it doesn't or shouldn't apply to them, or they're wearing an invisible tinfoil hat.

Either way, that's not my concern.

Meanwhile, I'm wearing one because I can, and I think it could make some small contribution to reducing the rate of infection, which is good for me and everybody else.

PablosHoney · 26/07/2020 20:43

Wee masky 😂😂

BelleSausage · 26/07/2020 20:43

I love the anecdata- ‘my friend is a nurse/doctor/virologist and thinks masks are stupid’

HA!

Being a nurse/doctor/virologist doesn’t stop someone from being dead wrong and a twat.

Wear a mask.

BelleSausage · 26/07/2020 20:47

@Alsohuman

You seem to have misunderstood what the masks are for.

I wear a mask to stop myself potentially passing the virus on to someone else. I wouldn’t initially know if I had it. Some people never get symptoms.

I wear a mask because I want to help reduce transmission. It’s something I’m doing for my community.

I also do it because I want to stop the NHS from collapsing this winter.
