To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

*@nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut If you were that unwell, surely someone could have filled your scripts for you and saved you a trip?

Or drop the scripts off and pick them up in about half an hour. That way you wouldn't have had to stand in there, waiting, doing nothing.*

That was just to pick them up. They'd had it for nearly a week and still didn't have it ready. I wasn't ill, it was a panic attack. I throw up when I have panic attacks.

Can you contact your local Coronakindness group and see if a volunteer can collect and deliver your medication? Or even if the pharmacy will deliver? We had no problem arranging this. The one time I couldn’t get a volunteer right at the beginning of lockdown, they got me to phone them when I was outside and got a member of staff to bring it out to me. There are some really straightforward solutions that won’t see you throwing up all over the counter and not getting yourself in such a state.

Enchantmentz · 26/07/2020 17:19

I was out at a shopping complex today and most people were wearing masks, it was really busy and this is in scotland. I bought some masks from a bargain shop as the ones I have the material is too thick and I feel suffocated after a short while, new masks are sturdy thinner (bur not too thin) material and I felt comfortable in them.

It might peter out in a few months, people do become complacent especially if numbers are low.

Ipadipod · 26/07/2020 17:29

I work in retail and people are coming in wearing masks but then take them off to speak to us , we are also providing masks at the door and people take one and just carry it around in their hand .

hopefulhalf · 26/07/2020 17:34

In England we will be wearing masks until May 2021

cindyhove · 26/07/2020 17:36

Just wear them! I live in a hot climate and manage!! Reduces risk by 85%. Why wouldn’t you?? They don’t stop you breathing. It’s pure selfishness and stupidity not to wear them

Suja1 · 26/07/2020 17:40

You'll find out what it's like not to be able to breathe if you get Covid 19. Took me 6 weeks to feel better and I still get breathless. Ever since I've worn a mask and gloves. Believe me, wearing a mask is nothing compared to the virus. And spare a thought for the medical staff who have to wear them all day in ITU. Don't add to their burden.

Oscarsdaddy · 26/07/2020 17:42

Well it’s a non starter from the off really, the supermarkets in England saying they refuse to enforce it. I will wear one, don’t want to but I have respect for my fellow shoppers but if the supermarkets are saying they won’t Police it then it’s open season for them not to be worn.

All each supermarket needs to do is have someone on the door suggesting people wear one. That would probably be enough

africanantelope · 26/07/2020 17:44

The whole point of wearing masks is that social distancing isn't doable in all places. Lol. That's what you should of told that couple. I wear them at work so I'm used to them. We don't let people in without them on so it's either wear one or go somewhere else for your food shop.

Tompbabs1 · 26/07/2020 17:44

I have been wearing gloves all through this, I have psoriasis on my hands and using hand sanitizer my skin is splitting, extremely painful, so I use gloves and sanitizer or wash them when out shopping, I get by

bear1991 · 26/07/2020 17:46

DH and I have been wearing once pretty much since the start of lockdown in shops so we’re used to it by now. It shocks me the number of people who still refuse to wear them. The fabric ones aren’t too bad and we just fling them in the washing machine after each wear with the rest of the washing

Thisisnotreallymyname · 26/07/2020 17:48

Our local Lidl won’t let you in unless you’ve got one on. .. good on them.

FelicisNox · 26/07/2020 17:49

YABU for the simple fact that I'm utterly sick of this same topic being rehashed over and over again.

Seriously MN: get another topic of conversation.

maxybrown · 26/07/2020 17:50

I might be classed as a whinger then but.....I did wear it. I do have rosacea and my face was absolutely burning and really sore the hotter it got. I came away from the super market because I couldn't cope any longer and realised today I've forgotten loads of things. Town was ok as you dive in and out of shops but supermarket was much harder. Also loads of people with them hanging off, noses out, mouths out and because my face was so so irritated I ended up keep touching my mask and face and had to keep giving myself a talking to Blush whereas before I wouldn't have touched my face at all. Also noticed everyone is in your space. It's like it makes them super protected Hmm

Spikeyball · 26/07/2020 17:54

People on here have mentioned shops/ supermarkets not allowing people in without masks. Are they also banning under 3s from going in as well?

maxybrown · 26/07/2020 17:54

And again, yes we all know people wear them all day at work (I have friends that do) and people wear them in hot countries. It doesn't mean that some people actually majorly panic in them or find them really difficult to wear. I did actually struggle to catch my breath a couple of times and ended up sucking the mask into my mouth Hmm but by saying this doesn't mean I'm not wearing it or saying woe is me. I'm just saying it's not nice. And yes obviously we realise the virus isn't nice I had a friend die from it too. But it doesn't mean people can't say they find it hard just because others find it easy.

Aridane · 26/07/2020 17:56

I wish people would stop saying other countries just get on with it. A bus driver was murdered in France after asking a passenger to wear a mask. Appalling, but hardly proves all other countries are happily compliant

Flowers to our dead covid killed London bus drivers - am glad finally it’s no mask, no journey

asdfghjjkl · 26/07/2020 18:03

Strange that Spain has been wearing them for over 3 weeks and now they are on the quarantine list , they obviously don't work very well

Teachtrinity · 26/07/2020 18:06

I’ve been out and about all weekend in shops and garden centres and while the mask felt a bit odd at first I’ve got used to it and actually feel safer wearing it, it doesn’t bother me so much when you have to go past someone at less than 1m .... DH on the other hand refused to come out with me as he said he’s not wearing a bloody mask and calls me a sheep for conforming. I bought some nice fitted masks in nice plain colours and yes I’m enjoying wearing them 😊 signed ‘The Sheep’ 🤪

asdfghjjkl · 26/07/2020 18:09
@Boogiewoogiebugleboy 'Luckily my husband is not at all afraid of confrontation and would be perfectly prepared to shoot down any of the mask police in flames.'

Are you guys looking for a fight about it? Why not just say he's exempt? I think most people are quite understanding.
Reports I've heard are that shops are much quieter this weekend and distancing has gone , I've not been out the house needed shopping sent husband so that made it cheaper didn't get half the stuff , unless I can get online that's how it will continue,

asdfghjjkl · 26/07/2020 18:09

@lifeafter50

I would have gone shopping today but couldn't face either wearing a mask or being abused for not wearing one. I am going to save a lot of money at this rate.
Same here , I will be rich soon
asdfghjjkl · 26/07/2020 18:11

@YouJustDoYou

I lived in Japan. It was utterly normal. Funny how westerners are unable to cope, but other countries have managed efficiently for decades.
They don't go out in sun and have air conditioning everywhere as well
labyrinthloafer · 26/07/2020 18:12

@asdfghjjkl

FFS. Imagine how much worse it'd be without masks.

Mask + distancing + hygiene = reduces (not stops) transmission

The issue in Spain appears to be lack of distancing.

Mask + hygiene not as good
Distancing + hygiene not as good

(and hygiene only, as UK schools will be in September = shit)

fhc27 · 26/07/2020 18:12

I just don’t get what all the fuss is. Masks help prevent the spread via coughing, sneezing, talking. If you have covid and are asymptomatic you could save a life by wearing a mask. And especially so if people are not practicing social distancing! My 3 year old has been wearing a mask since January (in Hong Kong, in 30 plus degrees). It’s such a small thing to do in the grand scheme of things. Would you rather be asked to wear a mask and be able to go out or no mask and be forced back into lockdown again? For me, yes they’re inconvenient and mildly uncomfortable but it’s a no brainer. I actually can’t believe people are complaining about it! Masks should have been worn in the UK since the beginning and then perhaps 40,000 plus people wouldn’t have sadly died.
