To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

I would say that mask wearing is pretty high round where we live in France and the current rate of positive tests is 2.94 per 100,000 inhabitants. We went up to the coast the other day and behaviour was certainly less careful amongst the holiday visitors, which may be why some holiday areas have spikes. These areas previously had a very low number of cases, which does distort the R figures a bit.
I hope that people do not give up wearing masks; it seems to me to be the least we can do to keep infections down and protect ourselves and others as much as possible.
Interestingly when I talked to French friends about our family coming for a few days they were a bit shocked, as their perception is that the situation is still far worse in the UK.

@KaronAVyrus

They’ve been wearing them for several months now in Spain and it’s been a major success.
Yeah, such a success that anyone entering the country from Spain now had to quarantine for two weeks.
zwellers · 26/07/2020 09:33

Agree. I won't be going into shops whilst this is compulsory. I don't understand how we are meant to be out saving the economy and it's safe to do so but now we have to wear masks. Except when eating that's fine despite the fact you are still around other people. . Makes no sense.

letsghostdance · 26/07/2020 09:34

@Rainbowb quality regurgitated patter from the internet... What do people not understand about wearing a mask now to prevent a second wave of this? No one wants to be back here in a few months time. That's why we should be wearing them.

I'm in Scotland and mask compliance is extremely high. I was deeply hoping that England wouldn't show themselves up like the Americans have but it turns out that the individualism has well and truly cemented judging by many on this thread.

zwellers · 26/07/2020 09:38

Waterofaduckscrack not comparable. You get paid for the time you are wearing a madk

Somanysocks · 26/07/2020 09:42

For most of us wearing a mask is really not difficult, the sooner we comply hopefully the sooner we can beat this.

However the glove wearing is pointless, unless they are magic antiviral gloves. Just sanitise, or handwash and don't touch your face.

Boogiewoogiebugleboy · 26/07/2020 09:46

@letsghostdance I am not sure why people think it’s right to speak as the voice of a nation, making sweeping generalisations eg “ The whole of Spain can manage to wear a mask!” Or “ everyone in Scotland is complying!” It simply isn’t true and is an absolute nonsense. It discredits what you say immediately. There are always people who won’t comply. The cases I saw with masks under noses, on chins etc were in Scotland. Twenty of them. They were paying lip service and they weren’t complying. They may as well have looped the mask on to their big toe for all the good they were doing. You just can’t praise/condemn a nation in its entirety

Was annoying to begin with but I'm finding it becoming much more natural

The attitude by so many is truly shocking and not in a good way.

Believe it or not there are some people who cannot actually wear a mask, just because one person who has Autism or asthma can wear a mask doesn’t mean that everyone with Autism or asthma can.

I’m sick of reading on here and social media people saying such nasty things about people who genuinely cannot wear a mask.

I was actually able to take my disabled daughter out and Into some shops before Friday to help with her life skills learning and for her mental health but now she can’t go to any anymore. The distress wearing a mask causes her is beyond terrible due to her severe Autism.
Yes we have tried many times and it is truly horrendous for her.

According to many others just because they have autism and can wear a mask others can too, well goody for them, not everyone is the same.
Some say she should not go out, have access to the NHS, should just get used to it, is selfish etc etc.

Due to such awful attitudes she is now not able to go to a shop and her mental health is going to suffer even more. The life skills she was doing so well in has now gone out of the window.

Yes she is ‘exempt’ from wearing a mask but caring for a disabled person is exhausting and draining enough to have the energy to have to deal with having to explain to the self appointed mask police why she is unable to wear one.

If you are able to wear a mask then good, but please can people just stop with the nasty comments towards those that can’t.

Boomerwang · 26/07/2020 10:09

It's not up to any random to challenge someone not wearing a mask, just like it's not up to any random to challenge someone parking in a disabled bay then walking just fine.

If confrontation is your thing that's great, but confront a wall or a pumpkin and leave everybody else out of it.

I'm not in the UK but I caught a cold last week and just to be on the safe side I wore a mask (panic bought months ago) just to go to a pizza place and pick up dinner. I felt like a prat, nobody else was wearing a mask (just like nobody in my entire town) and it was steaming up my glasses so I had to keep touching the mask to sort it out. To make matters worse I told the staff at the pizzeria 'oh it's not because of you, I'm ill!' like a real dickhead. That's my fault though :P

Busybodies can complain to the relevant authority and if they do nothing, there's your answer.

Sorry, as a community we're not covering ourselves in glory at the moment. I think that if those that could wear a mask just cheerfully got on with it (or stopped moaning at least) then those that genuinely can't wouldn't have such a hard time.

The mask-moaning of those who just need to get a grip isn't helping matters, it makes wearing one/not wearing one a divisive issue. The assumption when you see someone not wearing one ought to be 'there must be a reason they can't, I'll mind my own business' but the moaning has muddied the waters.

JillGoodacre · 26/07/2020 10:19

@spikeyball.
Everyone wears them. Only people who aren't allowed out are those that are in quarantine/self isolation. Quarantine is done properly here as well, rather than the half arsed attempts I've read about in good old Blighty.

Spikeyball · 26/07/2020 10:34

If everyone that you see out is wearing a mask that means that some people won't be going out because they cannot wear one. Eg my non verbal severely autistic teenage son wouldn't be able to wear a mask just because he lived somewhere different.

PablosHoney · 26/07/2020 10:37

Cheerfully wear one, ffs 😂😂 As long as people who can wear one they can moan about what they like.

Powerlessstepmum · 26/07/2020 10:57

I really don't get what the fuss is about. Yes, they're a bit hot and humid inside, but you get used to it. I soon forgot I was wearing one.
As a side note, I think some mask designs are better than others. I have two where the elastic goes round the back of my head and one with ear loops. The ear loop mask is looser and moves around a bit. The tighter fitting ones are easier to forget about because they don't keep shifting position. Plus all three have nose wires, which helps with seeing clearly in a downwards direction.

Ilovemypantry · 26/07/2020 11:27

@Rainbowb

Just think it’s a bit late to bring them in now. It’s like wearing a condom to a baby shower.
It really isn’t

Ilovemyoantry
How is your comment called for?
Comments like yours are the reason why people who are Genuinely unable to wear masks are now to afraid to go out. They should not have to put up with very obvious nasty comments.

PablosHoney · 26/07/2020 12:08

That’s becoming the new adage for nutjobs, ‘don’t like masks, see how much you like a ventilator’ reactionary rubbish.

Spikeyball · 26/07/2020 12:08

"Don’t worry, a ventilator will help with that...."

The ventilator comment makes it easy to spot who the hard of thinking arseholes are.

iamapixie · 26/07/2020 12:10

I would hope it would wear thin but levels of compliance with lockdown have been extremely high and I suspect that levels of compliance with mask-wearing will be too. It's an easy placebo, and far easier than tackling the real issues like obesity and poor health, deprivation and air pollution, all of which have clear correlations with poor Covid outcomes.

Alloverthegrapevine · 26/07/2020 12:11

I just read that as "mask wearing will keep us thin" Now that might work Grin

gospelsinger · 26/07/2020 16:10

Face shields are better for communication

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 26/07/2020 16:14

I bought some cotton ones from etsy that seem a big improvement in terms of not getting sweaty.
A visor is also a non-sweaty option too

MeadowHay · 26/07/2020 16:22

I don't know anyone who is happy to wear one or feels totally comfortable in one and I have 3 close relatives who are NHS workers. The absolute last thing they want to do is wear a mask again outside of their working day. As a result of this nobody I know has returned to any 'leisure shopping' at all (and won't be for the duration of mask wearing being mandatory) and everyone is buying virtually everything online including the vast majority of food shopping even for those of us who weren't doing that pre-Covid.

For me personally, I can tolerate a mask for short periods of time, maybe half an hour or so depending on how hot it is or where I am so depending on my anxiety levels. But not longer than that or I start to get actual panic attack symptoms. (I am autistic and have GAD.) I find this grey area difficult because I can't claim to be exempt per se as I can wear one to run in the shop and pick up bread and milk or for a short bus ride. But for example I'm having driving lessons and I can't tolerate them for the length of those lessons so my instructor has agreed I don't need to wear one.
