To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

@QueenBlueberries

Grubby cloth masks, right. They are washable you know. Washing machine? Soap? Hand gel? Hand wash? or maybe that has passed you by.
Yes but you are relying on people to wash them, some wear sweaty teeshirts for days on end, they are not suddenly going to be washing masks. We are talking about the wider public here not just MN
BlackPetunia · 25/07/2020 23:25

So you are inhaling whatever you’ve used to wash them?

And these ‘Etsy’ homemade masks from fabric, I can’t see how they help, they just get soggy

ivykaty44 · 25/07/2020 23:31

@NameChange84 I don’t realise I have mine on, until I go to talk 😆 tbh I can’t see what the fuss is?

Mines in the bottom of my handbag, I pop it on to go in a shop ( supermarket) then op back in handbag

It’s a cycling pollution mask, it’s soft and comfortable

Have a snood for taking in cafes, just pop over face as a face covering - order and go outside ( sit outside wherever I go atm

ivykaty44 · 25/07/2020 23:34

Yes but you are relying on people to wash them,

What does it matter to you whether they wash or not? If they’ve got Covid19 the mask will help protect you, regardless of whether it’s been washed

If you have Covid19 and wear a mask clean or dirty - it’ll help prevent someone else getting the virus

Ravenesque · 25/07/2020 23:42

@BlackPetunia, it depends where I'm going and what I'm doing. Why do you ask?

Mypathtriedtokillme · 25/07/2020 23:48

Have you seen the fabric pusher tools? They just help you feed it though a bit more.

Or I use this thing
jaycotts.co.uk/products/bulky-seam-aid

I no longer back stitch at the end of the seam instead I’m just sewing back over the seam again from the long side.

SmileyClare · 25/07/2020 23:52

Ivykaty I agree, a face mask, even a grubby basic or homemade one will still serve it's purpose. It's a basic shield to catch water droplets spreading from that person's mouth into the air. The people near them are protected. Of course ite effective.

Feeling sick about the thought of someone wearing an unwashed mask or thinking it will harm you is a bit over the top. Let's not encourage germ phobia or start pushing all the mask myths (e.g.. they do not affect your oxygen levels as some people are claiming)
Children will also pick up on an adult's phobia and develop a deep rooted fear. I don't think it's helpful.

Defenbaker · 26/07/2020 00:09

@Mypathtriedtokillme Thanks for the links, I might buy one of those to help me. In the meantime I saw a clip on YT where they showed how to use a piece of cardboard or thick fabric at the back of the presser foot when the needle passes from 2 layers to 4 or more (when crossing seams etc). That trick might be worth trying for now.

And the reason why the mandated masks in Melbourne can be a scarf/bandanna, so as to get the highest level of compliance, especially from those on low incomes. This + the social distancing has to be better than a poke in the eye.

Twillow · 26/07/2020 00:42

I hadn’t to sneeze today whilst in a shop and I went to full on panic, do I sneeze in my mask (yuk) or pull it off, it was quite the predicament!

Gawd.
Of COURSE you sneeze IN your mask, the point of wearing one is mainly to contain your germs.

What IS with the nose out brigade?
Are they partial non-conformists? DO they have blocked noses so feel confident no breath will pass that way?
They look ridiculous.
I'm in retail where we have had a 60%+ higher rate of covid, which is why this has been introduced. I've been wearing a (cloth) mask for months throughout my shift. Yes it can get a bit hot, glasses can get steamy - you need to find the kind that works best for you - but it does get easier and I don't think twice about it now. Thank you to everyone who has been conforming.

But, Boris, please don't make gloves mandatory. There really isn't ANY evidence that this helps - just as how often you wash your hands is important, exactly the same rules would apply for gloves - and would create a huge amount of plastic waste.

EachDubh · 26/07/2020 00:42

Where I am in Scotland most seem to be complying and wearing correctly. I don't like them but I will wear them because my discomfort is less than making soneone ill. Seeing as cases are slowly creeping up in some areas of Scotland again I hope people remember to wear them and to distance. Selfishly I would like my kids to have some sort of normalty at school.

@echt It’s face covering in England & not 😷 mask, so you could cover your nose and mouth with a handkerchief & be within the laws

chaoticisatroll55 · 26/07/2020 06:02

I really wish they wouldn't make my glasses steam up.

A few days ago I was in a shop and saw an old school mum. We always say hello despite hating each other. The mask game me a good excuse to just walk on past.

Rainbowb · 26/07/2020 07:18

Just think it’s a bit late to bring them in now. It’s like wearing a condom to a baby shower.

missclimpson · 26/07/2020 07:24

Defenbaker ny sewing machine doesn't like the four layers either, especially the tricky bit at the top of the nose where the seams are. I find a bigger stitch helps as well as extra welly on the footplate. 😀
I sew the front and lining together, turn inside out, press and top stitch pocket layer. I managed four in three hours yesterday, so getting faster.

labyrinthloafer · 26/07/2020 07:25

It's nothing like the condom analogy, why do people trot that out, it doesn't even work Hmm - unless the father in question is planning to shag a whole load more people, in which case a box of condoms would be useful, yes.

I think the appropriate expression is better late than never.

ivykaty44 · 26/07/2020 07:35

Just think it’s a bit late to bring them in now. It’s like wearing a condom to a baby shower.

have to say its more akin to having a surprise baby and deciding to help prevent a second by taking contraception

KaronAVyrus · 26/07/2020 07:46

They’ve been wearing them for several months now in Spain and it’s been a major success.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 26/07/2020 08:22

What kind of masks is everybody wearing that means they can't breathe ? Rubber gimp masks ?

Also so where are you all living that's so warm ? It's been chilly, windy and drizzly here for weeks. I need to moveGrin

PeanutButterKid · 26/07/2020 08:49

That "major success" line is funny in light of this news about Spain.

To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I thought it was a joke .🤣
Boogiewoogiebugleboy · 26/07/2020 08:59

Wow I’m surprised there are such a high level in agreement. If that’s the case we may see compliance dropping quicker than we first thought.

@Aragog I'm sorry for your loss.
Sadly much of the dry cleaning we have done in recent months has been clothing worn for funerals.

We did expected the dry cleaning side of things to be very slow because not only are people not wearing suits, they are not wearing dresses, jackets, silk blouses, ties or coats, nor school blazers and pleated skirts. Obviously, there haven't been the prom dresses and suits, wedding dresses and guest dresses, jackets and suits this year either.

Fortunately the laundry side of things, duvets, pillows, bedding and towels has kept us ticking over to some extent. Perhaps obviously, we are not getting shirts in either, maybe 10 a week rather than the 100- 150 we were processing each week pre lockdown.

Our cash flow situation is not being helped by customers not picking up the dry cleaning and laundry we had processed before lockdown. Despite us having sent reminders to them all, we currently have about £800 of income sitting in our shop.

August is always a quiet month anyway but if things don't pick up in September, be it masks, gloves or whatever next, we won't be here by Christmas.

GilderoyLockdown · 26/07/2020 09:08

Yeah the dry cleaning drop in business was inevitable really. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the laundry side had been doing well in recent weeks though.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 26/07/2020 09:17

To those claiming it's pointless because it's too late - you do know that it has always been possible to wear one?

I find the inability of the community to take a bit if responsibility quite sad, there was nothing preventing us, as individuals, wearing masks earlier and yet now we're hearing moaning about it being too late.
