To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

@duckme Yes, I'm a bit perplexed as to why it's not okay to say you don't enjoy it. My DD is wearing one, but finds it irritating and that's fine for her to say so. She isn't going to stop but she doesn't have to be Pollyanna

Ravenesque · 25/07/2020 19:42

Perfectly happy to wear them and the moaning about them annoys me way more than wearing one ever could.

Doobydoo · 25/07/2020 19:47

They are not particularly comfy I agree! However,I think we will continue to wear them..think colds, flu etc as well. I am a nurse and wear one ..12+ hour shifts...and it can be annoying when glasses steam up at a crucial point! .some are better than others. If you are uncomfortable in a shop go outside for a bit and take it off.

BlackPetunia · 25/07/2020 19:47

@Ravenesque how long do you need to wear yours for daily? 4-5-8 hours?

WhentheDealGoesDown · 25/07/2020 19:49

The cloth ones are horrible, the disposable ones are much better, they wear the disposable ones much more in other countries.

The queues put me off more than masks but never mind between Tesco, Ocado and Amazon I’m sure I will manage.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 25/07/2020 19:57

The disposable ones are much itchier in my opinion, worse in the heat. Cloth ones are more comfortable for me.

To get back to the original question - which had nothing to do with whether it was a good rule or not - or even if individuals will wear them, have an exemption or will just avoid the situation.

I think you are right, many people already don't wear them properly and this will continue. Others, who also don't believe they confer any benefit will quickly follow suit and the whole shit show will be forgotten.

If people believed they (a) did any good or (b) there was still a big risk there would be far more compliance.

I think there will be a resurgence in wearing should there be a big increase in ITU patients over the autumn/winter.

I think a large increase in the number of cases may make a small difference - but if most are recovering without hospitalisation it will only be small.

I will wear one where I am legally mandated to but will avoid these situations where possible.

shamalidacdak · 25/07/2020 20:00

Nope. We've been wearing them since March. It's the law where I live.

GilderoyLockdown · 25/07/2020 20:03

Mmm, I think senior politicians moving the goalposts has done a lot of damage here.

KaronAVyrus · 25/07/2020 20:05

I don’t like wearing a mask so I’ve swapped to 100% online shopping. I’ve got a face mask in my bag just in case I have to wear one but in general I’ll be avoiding shops from now on in.

Merrymumoftwo · 25/07/2020 20:05

My daughter can’t tolerate them at all due to her autism. We have found a compromise that she currently uses on the very rare occasions she goes out.

Having ASD and sensory issues would be a reason not to wear one, but isn't a shielding condition.

The same with PTSD. Also shielding ends on 1st August, my father has COPD so shouldn't wear a mask, and can't shield as all the support stops. He has to help my mum shop (she also has health issues).

timetest · 25/07/2020 20:13

I’ve been using masks since lockdown. It’s bearable if a bit annoying. If I had to wear one for 8 hours a day, I think it would be very uncomfortable.

Alonelonelyloner · 25/07/2020 20:15

What the Heck is wrong with you people in Britain generally?

And those that say other countries have difficulty complying, Germany manages just fine. And has done for months.

You get used to it. Most people need to get a grip.

Thomasina79 · 25/07/2020 20:16

Valleydad99 nhs does care about you. Please, please ring your GP on Monday. I obviously Don’t know your personal details, but urgent cancer treatment and referrals are going ahead as usual. Please don’t just leave it! (I work as admin in NHS btw, so not medical, but know about some of the machinations of the NHS).

I care, for what it’s worth.

yeOldeTrout · 25/07/2020 20:20

German butcher who doesn't like mask-wearing.

Google translate:
"A Nuremberg butcher caused a sensation with his provocative anti-mask notice. The response was different: Frank Kraft says that he has received a lot of encouragement from his customers. However, there were also bad allegations from others."

yeOldeTrout · 25/07/2020 20:22

Worries that mask mandates deter shoppers & calls to relax the rules in Pomerania.

It really reads just like the British public discourse on mandatory face coverings when U start reading thru German news articles.

parallax80 · 25/07/2020 20:25

It's their job, they wear light, disposable masks that get binned after each patient.

Not in many ICU. You get 1 per session, which usually means 2 per 12.5 hour shift, as you are allowed to remove to eat.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 25/07/2020 20:28

Ong it's just not a big deal. I wear one, its fine.

JillGoodacre · 25/07/2020 20:30

We've had to wear a mask and gloves in shop since around the beginning of April. Gloves are only mandatory in supermarkets now. Everyone (and I mean everyone) wears one when they are in a shop. No one complains. I live in the middle east it's hot and humid and it's a pain in the arse. I might be asymptomatic for all I know and I'd hate to think I'd unwillingly passed on this virus to someone in worse health than me. Just fucking get on with it and stop whining.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 25/07/2020 20:33

The whole point is that the medical establishment is based on a theory which holds no water under scrutiny

The medicinal establishment? Are you referring to medical science as a whole ? WHO ?

And for those saying well we were not wearing masks in March so why now (some countries were) the understanding of the transmission of covid is being understood better. And yes we do have to get back to some sort or normality we have to learn to live with this awful virus

Wearing a fabric face covering or mask isn’t protecting you it’s protecting others if you are asymptotic it’s nit rocket science to be able to work out that of the vast majority wear masks to spread of infection (along with following other advice) slows down the spread of covid

Jojobar · 25/07/2020 20:46

I accept facemasks if worn and used correctly can offer some protection, but only if there's something to be protected from. The incidences of infection in certain parts of the country are miniscule, yet we're all now wearing face coverings in shops. This is surely more about making people less afraid about going out (even though the risks involved in going out are and have always been very low) than actually reducing transmission. I'm surprised more people can't see that.

Burnthurst187 · 25/07/2020 20:49

I went to ASDA mid morning today and it was very quiet inside, got me wondering if ppl are staying away because of the compulsory face coverings, unless you work there of course Confused

Catmads · 25/07/2020 20:51

@GilderoyLockdown I fear that many people are already staying away from the high street rather than wear a mask.

I work in a small independent dry cleaner and laundry where historically Saturday has always been the busiest day by far.
Trade has been slow in dry cleaning but steady in laundry since reopening after lockdown.

Yesterday we had 3 customers all day and took no money at all.
Today, Saturday we had 8 customers and took a grand total of £77.
These are the worst days we have ever had in over 25 years trading and they happen to coincide with masks becoming compulsory in shops.

I really hope it was just a glitch rather than another new normal because we will not survive.
