To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

Genuine question. Reading that the masks are to protect others if you are asymptomatic. Assuming you aren't coughing/sneezing (because you have no symptoms), exactly how are you spreading the virus?

NameChange84 · 25/07/2020 21:01

exactly how are you spreading the virus?

Breathing, talking, whistling, singing to yourself, clearing your throat, “spraying not saying”, shouting, smoking, panting etc etc

labyrinthloafer · 25/07/2020 21:01

Well I certainly hope that people don't stay away from shops due to masks. It would be a shame when they can help us avoid a second lockdown which will also be bad for business.

Fwiw, I went round my nearest city today for the first time (as opposed to my area) and it was because I felt more confident knowing others were wearing masks.

Timekeeper1 · 25/07/2020 21:03

I accept facemasks if worn and used correctly can offer some protection, but only if there's something to be protected from.

OMFG! Confused

Good for you. I hope everyone who likes wearing them does the same as you say the economy needs it.

I hate masks. I will wear them where required but find them uncomfortabnle and not yet found a glass fogging solution that works (no tips required please I've tried pretty much everything). My solution to minimise situations where I need to use them. Valid choice following the rules to the letter.

Sailingblue · 25/07/2020 21:05

Happy to wear a mask as required but I don’t need public transport at the moment and largely can’t be bothered to go shopping. Under non-lockdown for example, I’d take my two small children to the garden centre quite regularly for a potter and drink. It really doesn’t seem like a fun trip out anymore and masks are the final thing that makes me feel like I can’t be bothered.

Timekeeper1 only quoting part of my post is misleading. The point I was making is if no one in my area currently has the virus, a mask isn't protecting anyone from anything.

And I do understand about people being asymptomatic. But if there's no one becoming symptomatic over a period of time, there's likely to be no one or very small numbers asymptomatic as well. I appreciate some areas have active infections but others don't.

If we genuinely needed to be wearing masks to truly stop the spread, it would be in all locations not just shops.

GilderoyLockdown · 25/07/2020 21:25

I'm not surprised unfortunately catmads, although I guess lockdown would be very hard for you to get over regardless.

Ultimately, we already know that there are some people who are going to avoid non essential shopping and other activities that would require masks, because wearing the masks tips the enjoyment balance. That's a given and something that needs to be accepted and understood. I already hated shopping anyway and got second hand if possible, so in my case it's moot. But I guess a lot of retailers are going to have their fingers crossed that the people saying they would shop more if masks became compulsory will be as good as their word.

Spikeyball · 25/07/2020 21:27

"Everyone (and I mean everyone) wears one when they are in a shop."

Does everyone go into shops or are their people who don't go out or are not allowed out I wonder.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 25/07/2020 21:39

A lot of people touch their mask and then pick up items of food in supermarkets, how can that be hygienic, at least when people don’t wear them they are not touching their face all the time

missingmum · 25/07/2020 21:43

I wore one today as I had to do my weekly shop, it was awful, I felt like I couldn't take a full breath, I've mild asthma but I'm thought I'd be ok. I definitely will not be doing any shopping unless absolutely essential now as I felt so shaky and dizzy with it on. Unless I put white placard on my head saying I'm exempt (which I'm not prepared to do) I'll just shop online.

When I removed it at the check out to take some air I got death stares and tuts. I just can't be stressed with it all.

BlackPetunia · 25/07/2020 21:49

in our store today a family all had on their masks......mum had a mid grey colour and it was soaking wet at the bottom, looked disgusting, stood out because of the colour

how is that helping?

Ratbum · 25/07/2020 21:51

We've been wearing masks since early March. No issues. Even DD (3) is fine with it.

Maybe it's worth trying different types/shapes/fabrics to find something comfortable.

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 25/07/2020 21:56

We’ve been mandated to wear them since March. Of course you get used to it. Mumsnet really is full of big ol babies today boo hooing.

Silvergreen · 25/07/2020 21:56

Many of us have been wearing masks on public transport for many weeks, with no real dissent seen.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 25/07/2020 21:56

Why do any of you think you can judge why someone isn't wearing one? You don't know anyones circumstances.

I wasn't allowed into boots today without wearing one. I do actually have a good reason but they wouldn't hear it and I needed my prescription so I put one on. By the time I had queued at the desk I was feeling hot, dizzy and decidedly panicky. I took it off and was told to put it back on. Then the pharmacist took ages to get my meds together. At this point I was very stressed and had an anxious stomach ache. I took the mask off again to try and calm down and the pharmacist came over and started telling me off and wouldnt just give me my meds so I could leave, at which point I became unable to cope and threw up copiously over her counter.

If she had just taken my word for it that I couldn't cope with a mask I would have taken my prescription and been on my way. Instead she had to clean vomit off the floor and counter.

Alsohuman · 25/07/2020 22:02

Like a pp, I give it a fortnight. It’ll go the same way as quarantine for everyone entering the country. In the meantime I won’t be going anywhere except a weekly supermarket trip. I’ve lived without shops for four months, I’ve got used to it now.

GilderoyLockdown · 25/07/2020 22:03

Do they provide NHS services? If it's a totally private shop that's one thing, disability discrimination laws notwithstanding, but if they are also getting NHS funding that isn't good enough. Although the vomit probably provided a lesson..

TimeWastingButFun · 25/07/2020 22:04

I've been wearing them since March. A fresh one for every trip and no touching until I get back in the car. It's no big deal at all. I really don't know why people are being so wimpish about it.

Bananabread8 · 25/07/2020 22:05

People will get used to them.

MirandaGoshawk · 25/07/2020 22:11

@ComDummings

It’s an absolute pain in the arse. I wear glasses and they’re so impractical with them, constantly steam up unless I have one with wire along the nose but I can’t afford loads of those masks. I bought medical tape to stick along my nose and under eyes to see if that helps but so impractical. And before anyone starts screeching “BUT WHAT ABOUT HCPs THEY MANAGE IT” well yes, they do but it’s their job, they have risk of actual bodily fluids splattering them and the medical masks aren’t quite as uncomfortable as the cloth ones to me.
Dh wears glasses. I bought him a cheap mask, which steamed up. So.I cut a hole in the top seam and shoved a bit of wire through. Problem solved! (A pipe cleaner would work too.)
Aragog · 25/07/2020 22:16

I work in a small independent dry cleaner and laundry where historically Saturday has always been the busiest day by far.
Trade has been slow in dry cleaning but steady in laundry since reopening after lockdown.

Re dry cleaning - all the companies we know where suits are normally worn simply aren't wearing them right now. At first it was due to working from home. Now staff are back many are being told not to wear dry clean only clothes such as suits as they can't be cleaned after each wear. So dh, who previously wore a suit 5 days a week, hasn't worn one since mid March except once for his dad's funeral in April, and he has no idea as to when he will need to do so for work purposes again. Most of our male friends are the same.
