To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

I can’t bear the ones that fit around the ear, so I tried out a wide hair band, which does the job without some of the discomfort. I can tolerate wearing one when shopping, though I don’t linger in the shop!

My feeling is though that viruses are minute and can only be seen under a microscope. The holes in the average mask can be seen with the naked eye so plenty of room for viruses to get through.

Part of me is beginning to wonder if it is a ploy on the governments part to get people back on the high street as people may feel safer wearing them? But who knows, anything is possible. I will wear one as it is mandatory, but wonder how effective they will be. I guess if they are as effective as some people say the rate of infection should go down dramatically in the next couple of weeks?

I don't object to wearing a mask but I do object to people saying that others are selfish for not wearing one because where do you draw the line? Have we not all spread germs that are deadly to some people in the past because we did not wear masks before? Flu also kills and the common cold can lead to chest infections which can kill the vulnerable. It seems really hypocritical to say that people are selfish when we have all been the same by not wearing masks before.

Emilyontmoor · 25/07/2020 18:47

I really do not understand the wearing it under the nose, what is the point? Worst of all worlds, still uncomfortable and totally pointless. Or perhaps they are mouth breathers Hmm

Pleasantly surprised that in both Tesco and Waitrose yesterday over 90% were wearing masks and only one mouth breather, where previously it was more like 40%. Given their weird proud defiant look I am guessing some that were not were of the extremist "Its a hoax, I am not a sheeple" nutjob (even Boris thinks so) tribe and any attempt to shame them will just add to their online cred.

You do get used to it even if you wear glasses so as in Asia I am sure it will become a norm for many. There was resistance at the start of the SARs epidemic but nobody even blinked about putting on masks at the start of this pandemic.

Alicatz66 · 25/07/2020 18:48

Yes... you get a bit sweaty as it's summer .. yes .. it's a pain in the ass ... but stop
Moaning and just wear them !!! Surgeons wear them ... they don't all whinge and say they can't breathe. ...

Only part of you? That's the only logical reason, money/the economy and a false sense of security for the public. If it was about safety it would have been mandatory in March

bananamuncher · 25/07/2020 18:50

There is absolutely no sound or compelling evidence to support germ theory, so masks are, at best, entirely pointless. Maybe the discomfort will inspire a few people to spend the miniscule amount of time in critical thought and research it would take to make them realise they are enacting a bizarre and pointless ritual while potentially damaging their own health. Yes OP, they are already past that point.

LindainLockdown · 25/07/2020 18:50

Except it will probably have the opposite effect and keep people away from the high street.

GameSetMatch · 25/07/2020 18:51

I hadn’t to sneeze today whilst in a shop and I went to full on panic, do I sneeze in my mask (yuk) or pull it off, it was quite the predicament!

lifeafter50 · 25/07/2020 18:54

A friend has discovered her ears are not symmetrical because the mask slips off on one side. Unwelcome revelation for her!

SantaClaritaDiet · 25/07/2020 18:55

@HeIenaDove

no-one gives a flying f a out me so why should I care about other people

I hear you @Valleydad99 Im sorry about whats happened Flowers

This bolded comment resonates with me too. Many on here couldnt give a fuck when tenants are left living in unhygienic conditions. On social housing threads they can be seen telling tenants to be grateful. Now those same tenants should wear a mask to protect the people who look down on them and other them.

what on earth does it have to do with anything?

Even if you must divide the world between landlords and tenants (and landlords of social housing are... the tax payer, so everybody)
which is a very strange way to view the world, but even so, presumably you would understand that it's ALSO tenants and yourself you are protecting?

It looks more and more likely we are running towards another lockdown, who on earth can want that! Social tenant or not Hmm

Surgeons wear lightweight sterile disposable masks. Not cloth masks which fill your nostrils when you breath in. (Nor disposable masks made on the floor of a sweat shop in Asia.) Surgeons also signed up to wear them for thier own protection. The rest of us didn't and wearing them for 7 or 8 hrs straight is no fun believe me. Headaches, lightheadedness, dry mouth and lips and itchy skin does not a happy worker make. 😞

you might want to share your amazingly well researched knowledge with the entire medical world, I am sure medical staff will be delighted to stop wearing masks even in surgery, and think how many savings that represents! It's also very good for the environment. So please do share immediately.
Xenia · 25/07/2020 18:57

I have been against them throughout although I did wear one today .

QuacksInTheDark · 25/07/2020 18:57

I went to Bluewater yesterday and walked around for an hour with a mask, the first half hour was fine but towards the end my face felt so hot and humid I began to feel faint and we ended up leaving. I’m one prone to fainting from stuffy environments (thank you London dungeons in the 90’s) so I will be avoiding shops for the foreseeable as I don’t want to embarrass myself by fainting in a queue and causing a scene. I wouldn’t mind them otherwiseX

Melassa · 25/07/2020 18:57

Sorry, I don’t have this inEnglish, but you get the gist.

To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?
Mmmmycorona · 25/07/2020 18:59

Oh get a grip. It’s better than catching Covid.
Also, think of those who’ve had to wear them for hours on end working in a healthcare setting.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 25/07/2020 19:00

I haven't seen anyone out without wearing a mask in ages (in England) unless you have a medical reason I don't know why you wouldn't, it's really not that bad.
I think the exact opposite to you, I don't think we will see a time in England where it will be unusual to see a person in a mask in a shop for a very long time, at least in my lifetime.

Weetabixandcrumpets · 25/07/2020 19:01

I am exempt. I went to Sainsburys and it was fine.

Tannoy announcement reminding customers to wear a face covering and also an announcement reminding customers that some can't and that's okay too.

YouBringLightInToADarkPlace · 25/07/2020 19:04

Of course I'll wear one when I need to, but sadly I have decided to avoid situations where I will.
I don't think I'm alone.
I don't think the high street will survive much longer.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 25/07/2020 19:05

I met my two of friends on Thursday for the first time since February at a shopping mall that we normally meet at. We had lunch and then a mooch around the shops, was awful and we’ve said we’re going to meet outdoors from now on. One way system in the mall but when you’re in the shops it’s a free for all, queues for all the shops, one in one out in some places, bleurgh. Was just not fun, we ended up sitting outside with a coffee so we could actually chat

Mrsm010918 · 25/07/2020 19:06

I'm on both sides of the coin on this one. I will wear a mask if I have to pop into a shop for 10 minutes but won't for any duration.

I have severe hayfever, sinusitis, and asthma combined and have a daily cocktail of tablets, sprays and inhalers to keep me mostly breathing fine. But in terms of medical this would not be enough for me to been shielding and therefore I have had to work regardless.

I work in retail and they asked us to try wearing the masks or visors they provide. I tried the visor, wore it for 3 hours and it gave me a thrombin headache, left visible dents in my forehead that are still there 9 hours later, and the reflections on the visor's screen actually made me dizzy.

So I've taken the stance that I will not wear one at work. I will also not enforce it for those coming through the doors. We had verbal and physical abuse enough since this all started and I don't get paid enough to invite more.

Dinocan · 25/07/2020 19:07

I’m used to it after only a few wears. I was thinking today it might be good to carry it on regardless of the situation with Covid. The nhs is near crippled every year with the flu season, could a cultural shift towards mask wearing help? It’s obviously good for everyone to get sick less.

Everyone I know in real life has said more or less the same thing. I think the whiney people who feel "suffocated" or think it being mandatory is going to "ruin the high street" are more likely to post on forums complaining about it. In reality it's not that difficult and most people don't find it a hassle.

Jux · 25/07/2020 19:09
@Boogie if your husband tried that with me, he'd get an earful. I not only wear a mask every time I'm in a shop or on a bus, I am continuing to distance as much as possible when other people do not. NOBODY is so special they have the right to risk the lives of other people so stop whinging and get on with, as most of us are already doing.
I went shopping today in my local town and it wasnt too awful. I’ve realised I’m not prepared to queue for shops. So shops like Wilco, Sainsbury’s and Poundland just didn’t get my custom.

I don’t mind wearing a mask but the one I’ve got is horrible. It’s a neoprene material and I just sweat. I want something lightweight and cotton.
