To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

YANBU. Also the terrible effect of plastic pollution from disposable masks and PPE. I wish the nanny state bedwetters could consider the disastrous effects - I heard of a swan tangled up in a mask and it will only get worse.
I’m quite attached to oxygen so won’t be wearing one.

barcodescanner · 25/07/2020 18:18

I have just got in from work, in a small shop. We took less than half what we would normally take on a Saturday. This is not good obviously, I would like to keep my job.
A few people didn't have masks so when I queried it they pulled their tshirts up over their faces.

thecatneuterer · 25/07/2020 18:18

I'm a mask moaner. I hate it and will only do it if a legal requirement, but I am doing it now as it is indeed a legal requirement.

However I have just been to the shops for the first time since Friday and I had to double check that I had got the right Friday - and it isn't in fact next week it's being introduced. I went into Iceland and estimated only around 25 per cent of customers had masks on. I then walked past loads of takeaways/kebab shops etc, all with lots of customers queuing inside. Not one was wearing a mask. This was Canning Town, East London if anyone's interested.

Wowthisisreal · 25/07/2020 18:20

I have to say I went clothes shopping today with DSis and honestly it was really not enjoyable.

Maybe we just had bad masks but we were hot and uncomfortable and we couldn't wait to get out of there. I saw someone I knew when out and we were talking about them and a passerby agreed they weren't enjoying the experience of being in town. If this is BJs plan for the economy is to get us to just chuck everything in our baskets so we can get the job done quicker and get out of there - it's working!

Obviously I am happy to wear them from a safety point of view and understand I need to. However, I won't be going on a 'proper' shopping trip again any time soon so if that's the aim of the government to keep us all at home still then it's worked for my and my DSis!

OneForMeToo · 25/07/2020 18:20

This will kill little touristy shops that rely on passing trade. No one is going to walk in on a whim now. If you forget your mask, you can't go in either

We are off away soon and have preordered all our food for the entire week apart from take away nights. We intended to made picnics for beach trips and with ice blocks to keep things cool. Medicine box filled, buckets and spades already
got etc

We won’t be stepping foot in any of the shops down there.

OhTheRoses · 25/07/2020 18:22

I found that if I put the mask on and then put my glasses on over the top of the mask they don't steam up. I've got a couole of handy bands from Seasslt and now three of their pleated cotton masks. I don't love it but have just survived an hour on Sainsburys.

FizzAfterSix · 25/07/2020 18:23

@barcodescanner you say you want to keep your job but surely it is not a shops job to police this?
If you are querying valuable customers in your shop about wearing masks they would probably feel unwelcome and not return - and then you have lost another customer to Amazon.
Your mask free customers may have perfectly valid reasons for not wearing a mask.
This is just another nail in the coffin for the high street.

Davespecifico · 25/07/2020 18:23

In Lidl today, only one person wasn’t wearing a mask. About a quarter had their masks below their noses - not sure why they bothered having them.

I wore one today when getting a weeks shop.

They are vile.

Jojobar · 25/07/2020 18:28

@TempsPerdu

Folk who feel suffocated - you'll get used to it, you need to persevere. The Nation's health is far more important than your temporary discomfort

I’m not going to argue with this, although I remain dubious as to their actual efficacy in preserving said health. I’m law abiding and I will wear a mask where it’s mandated. But those of us who don’t like the things are well within our rights to express this opinion, to avoid as far as possible places where they’re required and to maintain that they’re not conducive to resuming any kind of (pleasant, relaxed, sociable) normal life.

Agree entirely with this.
catsarecute · 25/07/2020 18:28

I feel much happier going to the shops if everyone is wearing a mask and will be more likely to venture out.
I was wearing one in the supermarket since the start of lockdown but was in the minority much to my dismay.
I think washable masks are the way to go (for environmental reasons).
I was out in the car in my local area today (city, working class area) and was really pleased to see lots of people wearing them even on the street.
Yes they are uncomfortable and yes my glasses get fogged up sometimes, but that seems like a small price to pay if it will help to reduce the spread of the virus, especially as people are starting to come out of shielding and as people are mixing more.
For people who don't like them (but don't have a medical reason not to wear them) they could:

  • practice wearing them for short intervals at home to get used to it
  • make a really thin lightweight one (I know this will give less protection but it will comply with rules still and maybe once used to it a thicker one could be worn)
  • get a visor instead
  • do online shopping or click and collect instead.
There's predictions of a second wave so I think masks will be with us for the long haul. We just need to think of the bigger picture and get on with it. Having said all that, I don't think gloves are worth bothering with, I think washing or sanitising your hands is much more effective.
barcodescanner · 25/07/2020 18:29

@FizzAfterSix. I didn't stop anyone coming in, I can't make someone wear a mask. I just reminded them they were supposed to be wearing one. Most had them in their bag. One family of three shared a mask and came in singularly.
My worry is we had roughly half the amount of customers we normally have on a Saturday. That was nothing to do with me

ifeellikeanidiot · 25/07/2020 18:30

@RoaryMouth

It's only on here and twitter that I've come across such strong views against masks. And I've not seen a single confrontation in a shop about the wearing of masks. It would certainly liven up my Asda trip but folk just seem to be getting on with wearing masks and minding their business round here.
this

I've started to wonder if Mumsnet is a parallel universe. In RL everyone I know is just getting on with it and wearing a mask. There really is no debate about it. It's such a non-issue Confused

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 25/07/2020 18:30

I'm in Spain on holiday and its.so stifling wearing one out here In this heat. A lot don't wear them or just have them round their necks, arms, etc. Theres also zero social distancing, trains are full,
and no one way system in supermarkets. For a country that completely shut down they've certainly opened back up very wrong!

I don't know which bit of Spain you're in but that is absolutely NOT my experience where I live in Spain. They are mandatory in all public spaces at all times and pretty much EVERYONE is complying. Are the people not wearing them Spanish or tourists?

earthyfire · 25/07/2020 18:32

I'm asthmatic and I feel like I am suffocating when wearing one. I also hate the way the price of the things have gone way over the top!

AngryPrincess · 25/07/2020 18:32

It hasn’t in Asia. Think it’s only England and the States that are whingeing. It’s not really a big deal.

corythatwas · 25/07/2020 18:34

I feel much happier going to the shops if everyone is wearing a mask and will be more likely to venture out.

Same here.

BlackPetunia · 25/07/2020 18:34

I would be fine wearing it for a shopping trip .. no problem

I just can’t do my job with it on. I can’t concentrate, it’s uncomfortable. I tried today and managed 3 hours. But it’s a hot environment....we were all sweating, so inevitably,fiddled/touched our faces

There’s no way round that

Pollypocket89 · 25/07/2020 18:37

I don't understand all this stop moaning etc. It's shit, people are allowed to moan

1950swallpaper · 25/07/2020 18:37

Other countries are not compliant. I was in Italy the other week and only about 2/3 of people were wearing them in shops.

HeIenaDove · 25/07/2020 18:37

no-one gives a flying f a out me so why should I care about other people

I hear you @Valleydad99 Im sorry about whats happened Flowers

This bolded comment resonates with me too. Many on here couldnt give a fuck when tenants are left living in unhygienic conditions. On social housing threads they can be seen telling tenants to be grateful. Now those same tenants should wear a mask to protect the people who look down on them and other them.

borntobequiet · 25/07/2020 18:38

No. I wouldn’t be happy in shops/on public transport without one. I have some comfortable 3-layer cotton ones that wash well and put my glasses on top, so they don’t steam up.

corythatwas · 25/07/2020 18:43

Now those same tenants should wear a mask to protect the people who look down on them and other them.

Well, if you can guarantee that you will only infect wealthy landlords who exploit their tenants...

laidbacklife · 25/07/2020 18:43

I am not a fan and will be doing minimal shopping because of it. Mind you, when driving through town today I noticed many people in shops not bothering... I assume that will only increase.
