To think most women keep hair long to be attractive to the opposite sex?

It's always been said men prefer long hair it looks more feminine etc.
I know many women hate having their hair short and are devastated if their hairdresser cuts of more than an inch. What is the obsession with long hair? I have fine hair and cut it short because long hair looks crap on me but I'm definitely in the minority. Even women who look better with short hair because of their hair texture insist on keeping it long. Do you think that's because we are subconsciously taught mainly by men that long hair is more attractive. Plus all teen girls have that uniform ultra long hair there is no diversity. And no I'm not jealous because I have short hair!(well very short bob to be fair.)

I keep my hair long to look attractive, but that's just because I enjoy looking attractive. Nothing to doing with trying to attract men

BinkyBoinky · 20/07/2020 22:07

@betteliefsen because that's what it's called!

Do all the women with long hair not colour or highlight their hair? I have long hair too but have expensive and time consuming colour maintenance.
I’ve always dyed my own at home. I couldn’t afford the upkeep of going to a hairdresser. Two boxes of dye every 6 weeks, £8.

Nah, that costs money.
No hair colour, no styling, no cutting
cheapskate Grin

Box dye, every six weeks.

@Phoebesgift I don’t colour my hair. It’s a rich dark chestnutty colour that’s always had natural red lowlights in it and I prefer natural colours and a more natural look in general (so wouldn’t be into bright colours and blonde would look ridiculous on me). When my hair eventually greys then I’ll revaluate (maybe use henna) but now I like “Virgin” hair that’s as healthy and natural as possible with no chemical treatments.

goose1964 · 20/07/2020 22:11

Mine's long because I hate going to the hairdresser.

Legoandloldolls · 20/07/2020 22:12

Look g hair takes no styling. Tie it all up in a messy bun in under a minute. Voila! Your ready.

My hair is curly and short I would look like Ronald Macdonald. It might look great on you, but not so much on me.

I'm married so attracting men, any man even dh isn't as important as one minute up do😂

CMOTDibbler · 20/07/2020 22:23

I haven't dyed my hair for 8 years now (so am doubly rebellious with long, silver hair), but before that I dyed it myself. My roots needed doing every 2 weeks, and I couldn't be doing with going every 8 weeks, let alone 2

Lweji · 20/07/2020 22:23

Long hair on anyone over 40 looks awful.

Why? Can you explain?

Are we not supposed to wear short skirts or bikinis too? Are we allowed sex? Grin

I dye it myself at home and sometimes highlight it bleach it.

I only had professional highlights twice.

Waiting for my stuff to arrive to do my summer hair. Grin

ghostyslovesheets · 20/07/2020 22:34

I like it - it suits me - I am 50 and don’t give a tiny rats ball what men think

My lesbian daughter has arse length hair 🤷‍♀️

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 20/07/2020 22:36

VestaTilley · 20/07/2020 22:38

No. Most of us don’t actually care what men think about our appearance (I certainly don’t), nor are we motivated by wanting to attract them when deciding on our length of hair. My hair is long because I’m lazy and uninterested in hair styles: that’s it.

shinyredbus · 20/07/2020 22:40

Nah. I have long hair (Down to my bum) because I look fucking ace with long hair. I’ve had short hair - shorter than Madonna when she did vogue. I liked it but not as much. I have my hair long for me, not for any man(strange thing to assume) my daughter has long hair because she wants to look like her mummy.

MiddlesexGirl · 20/07/2020 22:46

Long hair on anyone over 40 looks awful. Shoulder length at most. Also women who still hang onto extra long hair look ridiculous.

Thanks Doodah for the insult.
I'm in my 50s and have almost waist length hair. It's usually tied up but when it's down I give it a bit of de-frizz and it looks fantastic and gives me lots of confidence.

I use a box dye about once every six months just to keep it a bit brighter. It's blonde so not showing any grey yet.

I haven't been to a hairdresser for at least 15 years so lots of money saved too.

I do my own. Its about £6 a box and takes about an hour every six weeks.

Never colour or highlight here

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 20/07/2020 22:58

I also dye my roots, it costs a fiver and takes less than an hour every couple of months.

I'm 40 and my long hair looks great on me Grin

reepicheepsconscience · 20/07/2020 22:59

I would love to have long hair, but it physically doesn't grow past shoulder length. It's also very fine and can look a bit rats tailish if not trimmed. I always had it fairly short as a kid, and then a spikey pixie cut in the early 80s. I did have it permed which gave it more body when longer, but I really hate going to the hairdresser, so high maintenance is not for me. I'm very happy with the colour, and no grey at approaching 60.
My daughter has gorgeous long, thick auburn hair. She is stopped in the street by people admiring it! She also has the fastest growing hair of anyone I've ever known. But it is fashion. I remember picking her up from college, and watching hundreds of teenage girls walk past, and only counted two with short hair. That wasn't the case when I was a teenager.

2020wasShocking · 20/07/2020 23:02

In all honesty? Yes throughout my life. I do think some people look better with a short hair but I’m not one of them.

I wouldn’t have the confidence in myself to have ever had it short. I also know my DH likes longer hair.

AllNaturalIngredients · 20/07/2020 23:14

I have ridiculously fine hair so wear extensions so I can keep it long ...I do it because it makes feel pretty & I like playing with. Also short hair wouldn’t suit my face shape. Couldn’t care less what a man thinks. ..,one of my ex’s actually preferred shorter hair on women, but I would never have cut it to please him

AllNaturalIngredients · 20/07/2020 23:18

Please, women of any age can wear their hair long and it looks beautiful (as does short hair if thats the way they like it)

GinGinHooray · 20/07/2020 23:22

I look like my grandmother when my hair is short - I prefer it long, how the opposite sex view my hair has never occurred to me.
